Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Sep 06, 2012 10:22 am I would like to add a pantry (storage unit) right next to the pantry after handover. My kitchen was not customisable so I will be doing alterations after handover. More work, but at least my furniture is still in storage so it is easier to work now than later. The kitchen is an L-shape and very small (think of 1 bedroom apartment kitchens, all against wall, no island). One side of the L has the cooktop and 6 or so overhead cabinets, and fridge space the other side has a double sink, some bench space and one tall pantry. The pantry is on the edge of the kitchen, towards the living/dining area, I'd like a kitchen installer to come in and put in a similar height (about 2m) cabinet (maybe 1m wide, and the depth would be standard to match the bench). I am putting in cleaning equipment eg vacuum cleaner, mops, dusting pan, possibly blankets and bedding as there isn't enough storage in the bedrooms either. Is a kitchen cabinet maker the right people to contact? If my budget allows, I also want to add an overhead cabinet over the sink area (slightly to the left) for more plate room. The problem: - I have no idea where to go (or how to look up kitchen makers) in the ACT. - I have no idea what kind of prices to expect for additional cabinets..is it going to cost thousands to install 1 pantry? - I have no idea how cabinets can be added (glued to slab??) - I don't know if it would require repainting of the walls. - Is it ok to install overhead cabinets in the sink area? If I could get any ideas (so I don't sound totally lost when I talk to installers) it would help a lot as this is in my to-do list this weekend, among so many other house related things!! Re: Adding kitchen pantry after handover - How do I do it? 2Sep 07, 2012 8:52 am Do you have enough wall left to add a 1 meter pantry? If so then your in luck. Things to consider: Does the existing pantry have an end panel going straight to the floor or to kicker height? If it is at kicker height you need the cabinet maker to make the additional kicker for the new pantry with a seen return. Then remove that panel Put in new pantry, re-use Tall panel on the extreme right hand side to finish off your run of cabinets. If the end panel goes straight to the floor, same as above but kicker doesnt need the return finish. I'm stating this because the easy option for the cabinetmaker would be to simply add a 1 meter pantry to the existing run with a new end panel. The result would look terrible if you leave the old end panel sandwiched between your 2 pantries. Also consider if you need additional bulkhead above the panrty. If so you may need a plasterer in to add matching cornice if not square set. Go to your local cabinet maker, with specs of colours/materials used from your builder. If it's melamine, you'd be looking at around $1200 ball park for this. You can add cabinets above your sink area as long as there's no window there. Just order them around 400-500 high so you don't bump your head on them when using the sink. If you posted a picture of your new kitchen I could better advise on this. Re: Adding kitchen pantry after handover - How do I do it? 3Sep 07, 2012 9:46 am Its actually a very easy job. I would call cabinet makers instead of kitchen companys. They will be more willing to look/quote the job for you and will be a bit cheaper too. You should need to repaint any walls. Overheads can be added but I would sugest a minimum of 600mm above the bench. Any lower and you will feel boxed in and can easily bump your head. Google cabinet makers and make a few calls. It is amazing how much I don't know about this area... I cannot adequately answer your questions about the end panel (I think it is at kicker height-as I can see the kicker bit below the panel?) so I will attempt to post a photo of my kitchen in progress but I am still not sure how photos are added. I'm thinking photobucket..or similar. Will work on it tonight. I was going to put my houseplan up as well because I am getting worried if there is enough space for the storage cabinet. There is no window there, just a sink. I think adding the storage unit and more cabinets would make the house so much easier to live in so I am really excited now that there is a chance I can do it. Thanks once again Sonny Do you have enough wall left to add a 1 meter pantry? If so then your in luck. Re: Adding kitchen pantry after handover - How do I do it? 5Sep 07, 2012 1:29 pm Thank you CuttingEdgeKitchens! Would cabinet makers be happy to do the overhead cabinets above the sink as well? Is it because as a kitchen, my job is too small/incomplete? I wanted to get preliminary contacts because once I get the keys I have to quickly move; I have to do the kitchen before I can do my floor...so was hoping I could go and meet someone before handover. Or am I rushing too much?? I will google cabinet makers as you suggested CuttingEdgeKitchens Its actually a very easy job. I would call cabinet makers instead of kitchen companys. Cabinet makers build kitchens and kitchen cabinets all the time so yes they would be happy to do the overheads aswell! If you give the cabinet maker a rough overall length and height of the overheads/pantry they will be able to quote the job for you. This allows you to compare quotes before wasting time with check measures. Add 1 meter of kicker. Remove the end panel. Put in new pantry. Put the end panel back on. Extend the mdf bulkhead. This is any easy job. Would be good if it could get done before your cornice goes on. Re: Adding kitchen pantry after handover - How do I do it? 9Sep 08, 2012 7:37 am Sonny Not a problem. Add 1 meter of kicker. I tried to find some cabinet makers but didn't get around to going to one--they all shut at noon here. Can anyone recommend a cabinet maker that they know? I am a bit intimidated looking at all the websites with their fancy kitchens! I wonder if the cabinet maker would think mine is too small a job? Re: Adding kitchen pantry after handover - How do I do it? 11Sep 09, 2012 12:25 am I've just added my floor plan, the kitchen can be seen in relation to the rest of the space here: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=59389 Re: Adding kitchen pantry after handover - How do I do it? 12Sep 11, 2012 2:32 pm Also, would anyone know what kind of budget I need to get a pantry plus some overhead cabinets (4 or so) installed? Would I buy a ready-made product to save? Would it be over $2000? Re: Adding kitchen pantry after handover - How do I do it? 13Sep 11, 2012 3:04 pm Yes you would save with a flat pack (ready made) but the quality is terriable compared to a kitchen company or cabinet maker. Price depends on the material used for the doors and the length of the overheads. Without those I would be stabbing in the dark. You are right, flat packs always look like flat packs and it's not something I would enjoy in the long run, although I would buy it for temporary use (in a rental etc). My conclusion is to save up until I can afford a proper cabinet , preferably laminex, and get them installed professionally (one day). I also noticed most people don't have overhead above the sink these days (also because they have much bigger kitchens than mine) and I am starting to think if it feels better without one above the sink...I expect to use the sink a lot because we have no dishwasher.
