Browse Forums Kitchen Corner Re: New kitchen 21Aug 25, 2012 10:36 am Is it a two door fridge? First calculate the clearance gap for the doors to open easily if it is, combined with final plastered wall thickness, and make sure the wall doesn't intrude too far into your dining space. If it doesn't then that's fine. If you intended to have the "built in" look for the fridge- for instance if you wanted end panels and perhaps high storage cabinets above- the 700 wouldn't lend itself to that, but it would define your kitchen space. I gather you don't like the look of the full nib? Aesthetically, how would you cap the wall or would you leave it plain plaster? Or tiled on kitchen side? Re: New kitchen 24Aug 26, 2012 10:44 pm Hi Paul. I think I prefer the fridge in its initial position. I'd be inclined to put two 600mm ovens side-by-side on the pantry wall, at waist-height and putting drawers under and cupboards on top. You could even slot the microwave & a cappuccino machine in too! Re: New kitchen 25Aug 27, 2012 7:18 pm Still don't like the oven near the dining...safety issue as it's closer to the traffic flow area. Stud or nib wall looks fine, was clearance etc ok? You have quite a large room and the island might look too small. I too would move the cooktop further to the middle because of safety issues. Where is your bin system in the cupboards? If you haven't decided on a dishwasher, go for an XXL with cutlery drawer. We just bought one from a Miele sale and it is HUGE. We just bought one from a Miele sale and it is HUGE. The island is 1800mm wide and 1200mm deep, it doesn't look that big in the mock up because I can't put the bench top on. The bins will be located on one side of the island and the built in dishwasher next to the sink. I also found out that metalline isn't the same as laminex as we know it, it's actually paint over an aluminium sheet and can be scratched. Re: New kitchen 29Aug 30, 2012 1:59 pm PaulMac The island is 1800mm wide and 1200mm deep, it doesn't look that big in the mock up because I can't put the bench top on. The bins will be located on one side of the island and the built in dishwasher next to the sink. I wonder if the location for your bin is the best. Most of the cutting will inlude some "washing" of vegetables, chicken and so forth. Best would be to do all the chopping near a sink where you have next to it your bin, straight under the benchtop and the leftovers end up in the bin with a wipe. If you do your cutting on the island, a lot of times you will have to move wet vegetable/meat from on bench to the other which could make the floor slippery. The least time one spents at the hotplate, it's mainly at or near the sink. If the island is 1200mm deep, how deep are the cupboards underneath or how deep is your overhang? Is the overhang supported at both ends, eg waterfall edges? Evelin Re: New kitchen 31Aug 31, 2012 8:11 pm Here are my thoughts. 1. Put the oven and microwave in a tower next to the fridge. 2. Centre the sink and window in remaining bench. 3. Install bin beside sink-opposite side to dishwasher. 4. Move hotplate and rangehood to centre of pantry wall. 5. Island now clear but only needs to be 1000 deep. Think that’s all. Regards, Grumbles Re: New kitchen 32Aug 31, 2012 10:34 pm grumblebum54 Here are my thoughts. 1. I believe you mean hotplate/microwave/fridge on the right side of the pantry door. The cupboards/benchspace at the window side could be extended leaving plenty of space for coffee machine toaster/Kitchenaud and the likes. It will be a joy to work there with plenty of powerpoints on both ends. Maybe some shelfs or flip-open wall unit with downlights would break up the wall and ads some sparkle at night. I know I've done some in our old house! How are you doing it? I ended up using a cheap hammer drill (ozito) with a chisel bit in hammer mode, upside down with a cable tie on the trigger! A little faster than the bolster chisel and hammer I started with! 2 Re: New kitchen 39Sep 10, 2012 10:17 pm stormjr It's good fun pulling up the slate! I know I've done some in our old house!
