Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Aug 11, 2012 8:21 pm We have recently completed our kitchen but as yet we dont have our pantry door on. Our plans stipulated inward opening, integrated door, so I have a door but the cabinet maker is at a loss as to what hinge to use. Someone on H1 showed me he kitchen with a hafale hinge, that was in the floor, however apparently that is for a normal door, not a laminated door(ie same thickness as the rest of the kitchen), they were going to use a piano hinge, but that doesnt allow me to get out. Can any experts send me in the right direction to get a hinge that will allow the door to open both inwards and outwards. Thanks Re: Inward opening pantry door 3Aug 11, 2012 11:26 pm seriously now. . . hmmm. . . could they use the 180 degree door hinges? Though how would you make it stop in the middle? It's a challenge! Let me think about it (i.e. I will now go to bed and completely forget about your conundrum Gabs. ) Re: Inward opening pantry door 7Aug 12, 2012 8:04 am jodge Just use the piano hinge and make sure you have the pantry well-stocked with wine. . . Maybe Bear Grylls has done something on escaping from a walk in pantry? What about those door hinges they use in hospitals, where they go both ways depending on which way you're entering? Just keep your phone with you when in the kitchen, so you can call bear for advice. How about commercial toilet door hinges, where there's a slope. The door naturally swings closed. I was thinking the same thing but then thought the little room might not ever be used again as a pantry, it could become the hidden room for those times you just need to hide from the world Re: Inward opening pantry door 13Aug 12, 2012 9:53 am smorgzzz jodge Just use the piano hinge and make sure you have the pantry well-stocked with wine. . . I was thinking restaurants but the same thing. Why can't they use for you whatever they use here?? Re: Inward opening pantry door 14Aug 12, 2012 11:59 am Thanks guys, very useful info as usual...NOT In regards to the piano hinge, we can have a handle on the inside, but because I dont want a handle on the outside, it means I have nothing to pull on to close it from the outside. The other hinges used in hospitals etc would be similar to the hafale hinge I have seen however they are for normal thickness doors, not a standard kitchen(laminex door) The cabinet maker suggested a shadow line the whole length of the door, similar to the handleless shark tooth drawers but sideways, I may have to end up with that, but would have preferred that the door was completely flush. Hoping one of the kitchen experts may have some idea! Almost all these type of hinges are made for full thickness doors not 18mm cabinet doors. You would need to use thicker doors around 32mm thick. You can get MDF that thick and have it spray in 2pac. or you could set two doors back 600mm from the front edge and have them open out.
