Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Aug 05, 2012 7:05 pm Do most people line up their cabinets to the height of their window? I'm just trying to work out cabinet sizes and if I line the cabinets to the top of the window I lose 70cm in cabinet height. Ceiling height is 2.4m, cornice is 50cm so overall height is 2.35m There is a gap between top of window and cornice of 200cm, so If I line cabinets with the window (and keep bulkhead) I only have 2.15m to work with. So, splasback = 60cm, bench height = 90cm, then my cabinet height will be 650cm. Is this too small? Should I forget about bulkhead ad cornice & use capping instead? Anyone know width of polytec capping? Re: Cabinet help! Are 650cm high cabinets too small? 2Aug 05, 2012 8:27 pm Our kitchen isn't in just yet, but our plans state the overhead cupboards as 600mm high, so even smaller than what you mentioned above but I think this will be fine. The overhead cupboards in our rental are quite long, approx 750mm which doesnt leave very much room between them and the bench and the top shelf is a bit too tall for me to reach so isn't really used for much anyway. So I think 650mm will be fine Kayla Re: Cabinet help! Are 650cm high cabinets too small? 3Aug 06, 2012 1:43 am We have 2.7m ceilings and our kitchen overhead cupboards are 920mm high and our laundry overhead cupboards are 720mm high, both have a 700mm high splash back. Although I can't actually get to the top shelf of the kitchen cupboards without a step stool, I think it gives a more streamlined balanced look and I'm intending to just store the special occasion / platters etc there. I never even considered that the overheads should line up with the windows. What about taking the cupboards all the way to the ceiling? You could have 900mm base cupboards, 700mm splash back and 750mm overheads with 50mm cornice, or 800mm overheads with the plaster square set? Or, you could go the other way and leave the bulkhead off completely, make the splash back 700mm high and overheads 550mm high to give them a floating appearance, this way they will still line up with your windows. You could maybe even have them as upward opening? I would double check the required distance from your cooktop to your overhead cupboards as I thought, (although I have been known to be wrong on occasion! ) that the minimum distance was 650mm? Best of luck with your decision. Re: Cabinet help! Are 650cm high cabinets too small? 4Aug 06, 2012 12:24 pm No, dont line your overheads up with the window! I would allow a small amount(20-30mm) of bulkhead below the cornice and take the overheads up. It will look so much better.
