Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Jul 30, 2012 2:31 pm We are in the process of designing our new kitchen, we have already bought our appliances and now are looking at doors and the layout of it. We have 1/4 strength hog bristle throughout the house with Antique USA on the skirtings etc so are looking at a pale white kitchen (to look good against the Antique white USA colour) however not cream IYKWIM We are really stuck on the type of doors to go with - the cabinetmaker suggested 2pac - Is that a good quality door ? We have two small children Our house is a 1920s bungalow so the internal and entrance doors are the old style routed doors, however we are thinking about going with flat doors? We are going with a bank of appliances on the wall and have an induction cooktop - also our sink will be undermount - so it's quite a modern feel? Sorry for all the questions - I am feeling a little overwhelmed at the moment!!! Re: Lots of kitchen questions 2Jul 30, 2012 8:17 pm Hi, it seems that opinions differ on 2 pack on H1. Some say favourably that they are hard wearing but others that they can chip easily. I suppose it depends on how ferocious your children are!! 2 pack is a modern gloss feel and easy clean. There are quite a few whites which are not cream based. Polar white is very white. Good luck with choices Re: Lots of kitchen questions 3Jul 30, 2012 10:54 pm 2-pac is a hard paint finish (also known as polyurethane). You can pretty much pick whatever colour you want, it comes in a glossy finish and is often the most expensive finish for cabinetry. However, it does look good, which is why it is so popular. Chipping depends on how you treat it and how well the paint job is done. Other finishes for cabinetry include vinyl wrap (also known as thermo/thermal wrapping I think) and laminate. Vinyl wrap is exactly what it says - plastic is heat-shrunk to fit around the door/drawer front. From what I understand, there is a broad colour selection (although not as large as 2pac or laminate) and you can even select some textured finishes (eg. wood grain-type texture). However, once damaged it cannot be repaired and will generally peel off. That's probably why it gets a bad wrap. Laminate is improved in leaps and bounds compared to what it used to be like 30-40 years ago. It is generally the cheapest finish for cabinetry and there is quite a large range of colours and effects. The laminates you can get now look quite good. 2-pac is a quality finish for kitchen cabinetry but if you want to save a bit of money, have a look at some laminate options as well. In terms of cabinet styling, you could happily go with flat doors - they suit most kitchens. A modern 'country' style is to use shaker-style cabintry. Here is a google search for images of shaker kitchens. Very popular in older houses - sympathetic to the age of the house, but still with a modern edge. Hope that helps. Unfortunatley opinions differ because they are cowboys out there that will pass of a single pac finish as 2 pac. If its done properly 2pac shouldnt chip easily. I have a 2pac kitchen and two kids under 4. No chips at all. For some reason most people think its only available in gloss. This couldnt be further from the truth. 90% of the kitchens we do in 2pac is in a finish other than gloss. Its actually quite rare for us to do a gloss kitchen! We have finally got our kitchen design sorted and are going for 2 pac in white gloss - as it will look great against our walnut floors. We have been tossing and turning over whether to go with the 2 pac or laminex as a few other mums have told me how there kitchens have chips in it already - in a short space of time - as they went with 2 pac.
