Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Jul 26, 2012 1:30 pm Hello, Just after some opinions on whether our kitchen is going to be too small...we are only in the early stages if drawing up our plans but this seems to be the only way it will work. the total area of the house inc alfresco and garage etc is 320m2. The kitchen is galley style with one side 600mm deep and 2.4m long. this has a 900mm stove and oven in the middle and 1.1m fridge space to the side. The other side is a 900mm deep breakfast bar with the sink and dw and is 3.5m long. The pantry closes off one end and is approx 3m x 1.2m with a sliding door. i was planning on putting microwave in there. I know a picture would be much better but waiting on them being sent through... We are just scared its going to look small as it opens out to a 5mx11m living/dining area and i love big kitchens! Re: kitchen size 2Jul 26, 2012 2:02 pm That is really hard to picture, especially being a galley with different lengths despite one being a breakfast bar. Even a roughly drawn picture scanned just to give a sense of placement would be helpful. What is the width of floor space between each side? In terms of what it is opening onto, it depends on whether you make the kitchen appear to be all open plan to the living / dining (ie one large polygon) or you want to have the kitchen as distinct (such as lowering the kitchen ceiling, etc). It also depends on how you divide the living dining space. If you have 7 metres of living and 4 metres of dining, then it attaches the dining to the kitchen more and they become reasonably equal in size (3 and 4 metres). But a pic would be great! The attached island is 1100mm wide x 3200mm long. The opposite side of the island is 3800mm long with a fridge on one side and pantry on the other. I wouldnt want our kitchen any smaller. Maybe switching the dining and living would look more proportional now...I just always find having the theatre and living right next to each other a bit odd! Re: kitchen size 6Jul 26, 2012 3:30 pm And to answer your questions barker Ceiling in living/dining is 31c and over kitchen is a 28c bulkhead. will have overhead cupboards either side of 900mm rangehood. the distance between the benches is approx 1.5m but the fridge section will be a bit smaller as our fridge will stick out further than the 600mm bench its next to. Re: kitchen size 7Jul 26, 2012 4:21 pm That reminds me of my apartment kitchen except that where you have a WIP, I have a wall. The layout works well. My pantry is about the size of a broom closest, it is way too small. The only annoying things is that when I open the fridge door, it blocks access to the kitchen - though that can be a blessing because it means only one person in the kitchen at a time. Just make sure you have enough room to open a dishwasher/fridge door, etc it should work fine. Depending on the orientation of your home, I am not sure about having a pantry not protected by eves, i wouldnt want it to get too hot in there. Re: kitchen size 8Jul 26, 2012 4:33 pm Hmmm hadn't thought about the sun heating it up! Will be east facing and only 1 metre from the fence which is why there are no eaves :s Im seriously considering ditching the idea of a WIP though just to open up the whole area and make it look bigger Re: kitchen size 9Jul 26, 2012 7:07 pm What I do when I want to rearrange a bathroom is- (I know you are doing a kitchen but same principal applies) draw the room on the concrete (I use the garage floor). Draw in the furniture (cupboards or bath etc) then two of you stand in it. Do you feel squashed? It gives a better feel for tight fitting things and space between corners etc. (we even pretend we're having a shower LOL) We need to get a life I know. Basic but it works for us. Re: kitchen size 10Jul 26, 2012 10:07 pm I personally think you should swap the living and dining so that you can have more space for the living and also that way the dining will be directly in front of the kitchen. I like a good WIP but also think your idea of removing it and adding more bench space/big cupboards instead will definitely open the kitchen up and be much more aesthetically pleasing. Kayla Re: kitchen size 11Jul 26, 2012 10:42 pm I agree with kjw7. Swap the living and dining. It makes sense for the kitchen to be connected with where you eat. I don't see a problem with theatre off the living. The picture is very helpful. In the first post, I thought the 2.4 metres included the fridge space. I am guessing the space next to the fridge is the door to the laundry. If you were to get rid of the walk in pantry (and I can see the benefits although I love a WIP) and having more bench space and possibly a window, the problem is you would then have no pantry cupboards unless you put a thin one between the fridge and the stove which might look a bit naff. Have you considered having having pantry cupboards against the wall to bed one and also moving the fridge there as well. This would move the door to laundry along and also shorten that end of breakfast bar but then where the WIP is now, you would have a wrap around bench so you would gain space here on the breakfast bar. This should then give space for two big pantry cupboards and also eliminates the problem of blocking people moving around the kitchen when the fridge door is open which alt0160 said. Also means the wrap around bench is the visible part from the living / dining, which makes the kitchen space seem bigger. Building tip No. 3: A raft slab will not get you down a river. I would shrink it to 1.4 and add another 100mm to the breakfast bar. 900mm does not leave a lot of space on breakfast bar side of sink (had it in my old house, always wished I had another 100mm) Building tip No. 3: A raft slab will not get you down a river. Obviously stove would go to external wall & fridge could go into pantry? You could have a cavity slider from your pantry to your laundry too if that works with the rest of your house plans. Re: kitchen size 14Jul 29, 2012 3:20 pm You've all given me loads of ideas! Trying to cut and paste to see what i come up with definitely going to investigate getting a deeper breakfast bar...i think 900mm might just be all they offer in the promo but hoping it can be upgraded! Sorry to hijack but I just wanted to say thank you to travel bug for the advice on drawing it up on concrete. I just did this with one of our bathrooms and decided to change it, just in time for the plumber to start his drainage work tomorrow. Re: kitchen size 16Jul 31, 2012 7:04 pm xxkatxx Ok I've had a try at drawing up a picture... I'm thinking maybe delete the WIP and have the kitchen wrap around and just have big cupboards for the pantry? I would not want to have a pantry at an outside wall, which in principle takes away any daylight in the kitchen. I would have tall cabinets on the opposite side (bed 1). Depending of the space between the two rows of cabinets, either a galley or u-shape kitchen but then with "dead corners". The door to the laundry I would move the depth of the tall cabinets to the right. A wall on both ends of the cabinets could enclose them. Re: kitchen size 17Aug 01, 2012 3:59 pm where is the current door position for the bedroom and the laundry? 2010, June : Land bought (1700sqm, battleaxe block). That's it so far! We're in the design phase .... Re: kitchen size 18Aug 01, 2012 6:15 pm The doors are opposite each other with the laundry one behind the fridge. the bedroom one is set in a mmetre or so. I've just realised that the plans we had drawn up used the wrong block size so ee get an extra 70cm of kitchen width! Im going to do some drawings with a long WIP where the fridge is down into the laundry area and then wrap bench around the wall end and create and entry to the laundry in the kitchen. i didn't want to have to go thru the kitchen to get to the laundry but it solves a lot of problems! Dear Members I have to decide the Facade column size. My custom builder standard is 350mm with rendering, but i asked for 470mm plus stone or tiles and yet to get… 0 4299 All sorted guys. Just needed to buy a blade with the correct bush. Dunno how to delete this post, can't find any help file. Cheers. 1 2821 Current door width is approx 2700, looking to have double doors fitted 820-820. What size does the frame need to be before door jamb? Thanks 0 2328 |
