Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Apr 22, 2012 9:44 pm Long time lurker, occasional stalker here. We are trying to envisage our Kitchen usage some more. So, we have the typical "double cupboard" space under an Abey Deluxe 1 & 3/4 bowl sink. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Under the one half we plan to have a Hideaway double bin (http://www.hideawaybins.com.au/products/hideaway-soft-close/sc220d-g.aspx) and other half an Insinkerator unit. We cannot figure out is whether we want the insinkerator under the larger bowl or the 3/4 bowl It's probably neither here nor there, but figured some of the other posters could offer some enlightenment. Also, we unfortunately only discovered the Hideaway bin solution (due to this excellent forum of course) after we had committed our plans to being final. So our current kitchen design has two adjacent opening cabinets under the sink, but with the hideaway bins requires the "frame" to be mounted / fixed to the carcass on both sides, but because it's an open cabinet with the bins installed in the one half of the frame, it has no carcass to mount to on the one side. So our questions are is it an easy thing for a cabinet maker to fix - should we incur the costs of a post contract variation to have this addressed? Suggestions? Maybe you've had the same problem - what did you do? Thanks, Jaans Oh, by the way, if we're lucky we break ground next week with a site scrape! Yahoo! Re: Hideaway bins & Insinkerator under fullsize or 3/4 bowl 2Apr 22, 2012 9:49 pm Jaans it ois a simple job for the cabinet maker or yourself to fit some timber for the side of the bin to attach to. Re: Hideaway bins & Insinkerator under fullsize or 3/4 bowl 3Apr 23, 2012 2:21 am Instead of mounting to the sides, you can also get some that are mounted on the floor: http://www.hettich.com.au/images/media_hg/Hideaway_Brochure_2011.pdf http://www.kimprod.com.au/KRB31.htm I used to have this one that the whole box was mounted on the floor and was connected to a normal hinged door and when you open the door the whole thing slides out: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Hideaway bins & Insinkerator under fullsize or 3/4 bowl 4Apr 23, 2012 3:20 am I did changes and upgrades with the kitchen consultant and as long as they went through the building company for their % on top they were happy. I previously had a bin in the cupboard and it was a PITA especially with wet hands and the like. Do you have room for a bin to the left of your microwave space or could you move the microwave to make way for a bin? The link you have to Hideaway bins actually shows a grey door pull bin, I have it in white and if you could install this you would love it as much as i do mine-see pic. We love it - it's also just the right size for the supermarket plastic bags... (Keep in mind, the roll of paper towel is just sitting on top of the bin - my sister was confused when she saw the photos) Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Built our house, time for decorating! Am trying to get around to updating our blog.... things have been a bit crazy! http://the-story-of-our-house.blogspot.com Re: Hideaway bins & Insinkerator under fullsize or 3/4 bowl 6Apr 24, 2012 12:46 pm Hi All Thanks for your replies. We would like to keep it under the sink. As builderforlife suggests we should be able to add an inner frame to the cabinet (to fit the hideaway bin mounts) without too much issue or cost. In terms of positioning, we'll leave that until it's built so we can see how the plumbing is run and see where to go from there. Worst case, if that doesn't quite work out we should be able to go with some other alternatives that you've suggested! Thanks! Re: Hideaway bins & Insinkerator under fullsize or 3/4 bowl 7May 14, 2012 3:33 pm Our kitchen designer came up with a very large drawer on Blum tracks which our 3 bins sit on underneath our double bowl sink. It is the width of the sink and then there is a drawer face (no drawer behind) at the top of it. There is space between the bins and the front of the drawer for our cleaning products and the plumbing is at the very back of the cavity. Normally the waste hangs down just a little too much. The version you have shown is also top mounted and door pull so will typically screw up into a shelf or counter top and open like a draw with the door (or drawer front) opening with it. If it is fitted behind a door as your drawing shows you will use a hideaway deluxe handle pull unit. I've usually ended up installing the 15 litre versions under sinks as they only need 340mm height. Another problem you may find if you go for the double bin version shown is that you won't have enough length if you mount it in the cupboard next to the dishwasher. Most dishwasher water lines and wastes now feed up through the base of the carcass next to the dishwasher. The double bin versions take up the entire depth of a carcass meaning they hit the water lines and don't allow the bin to close. Ultimately your bin position will be dictated by where your plumber runs his waste pipe. Normally the waste is offset to one side or the other and your bin will have to go in the adjacent cabinet. Hopefully your cabinet maker can sort something out for you, but the plumber really has to know so you can make sure you get a clear space to fit whatever bin you can fit. If the plumber doesn't know then they will just put the waste where ever it suits them and you may struggle to fit anything in. I agree with Laila. If you can, try and fit a draw pull unit. It is much better just to pull open the draw to access the bin rather than opening a door and then opening a bin. This is the unit that I have found a decent compromise for under sink installations. http://www.hideawaybins.com.au/products ... /kk6f.aspx Unfortunately you cant get it with soft close but the unit can be fitted easily as long as you have the length. Just make sure your cabinet maker doesn't bore your door for hinges and uses it as a drawer front. The bins aren't massive but still not too bad when you get the double unit. Hope all that makes sense, and all the best. That is practical advise that I will definitely use - our frame and roof trusses are up so I have enough time to inform both the plumber and cabinet maker. I think we'll go with the right hand side and see how much of space underneath we can make available. Based on that, then go with the unit that works best, ideally a door mounted drawer scenario if possible! Thanks again for those practical considerations. Re: Hideaway bins & Insinkerator under fullsize or 3/4 bowl 14May 18, 2012 11:08 pm Do you mean from the point of view of "wiping" it from the table, over the edge, into the bin (without the sink edge in the way)? I guess that does make sense to be able to do. Perhaps we should consider going with a post contract variation to address it properly. Thanks for the different perspective. @PHL: I didn't know they did a Push Open - i.e. without the need for a handle? That's cool! They do, but there are apparently limitations on how wide the drawers can go. We decided we didn't want handles, and it's easier to open without hands if your hands a full of rubbish. Yes, also you can have the bin open if you are working at the sink, easier to clean up, and I like the rubbish bin installed higher as it's more convenient than having to bend over. I love the HettichPushOpen, I'd install it higher. Also the in built towel rack is great! Re: Hideaway bins & Insinkerator under fullsize or 3/4 bowl 17May 20, 2012 5:03 pm I really wanted the tea towel rack under the sink and when we moved in to the rental it had one and I absolutely hated it, so the tea towel and hand towel hung over the back of a chair the whole time we were there. As my friend said it's like having a shower then hanging your towel in a cupboard. And such a nuisance when you have wet hands and have to open a door then pull out the rack. I spoke to my kitchen lady rep and we put an open space with rack in the end of the island bench-easy access and plenty of room for fresh air to circulate. See pic in earlier post above. Regards, Grumbles Re: Hideaway bins & Insinkerator under fullsize or 3/4 bowl 18May 21, 2012 10:12 am I have asked for a tea towel cupboard but what you have said GB, has made sense and now I am re-considering. I have a matching cupboard on the other side of the oven for trays so I might change the tea towel rack to a cupboard for chopping boards and hang the tea towels somewhere else. https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=43937&start=0 Bought a block in Golden Grove - Jan 2011 Finally finished our design, Mar 2012, *yay* Signed with ADH council consent June 12 Re: Hideaway bins & Insinkerator under fullsize or 3/4 bowl 19May 22, 2012 10:37 pm We've found oven doors handy places to hang tea towels...
