Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Apr 19, 2012 9:41 am I am ordering a new white kitchen very soon and was not sure whether to get MATT or GLOSSY white laminate cabinets. Which would look better, be practicable and not date. We will not be leaving this home. Caesarstone Ice Snow benchtop with splashback maybe white or beige with light beige floor tiles. My children are adults are at home (no small children). I would love your advice please. Re: Matt or gloss white laminate kitchen cabinets 2Apr 19, 2012 2:55 pm Which product are you using for the doors?? Personally I would use polyurethane for the doors and paint them in satin or semi gloss. I dont like matt because its too flat. Every little bit of dirt sticks to it. I dont like gloss as you get alot of reflections from it. Thats why I personally like the semi gloss poly. It has a nice sheen to it without being reflective and its easy to keep clean! Very easy to care for. However, if you have a LOT of natural light into your kitchen, I could imagine that high gloss cabinets may be quite glare-y and reflective. (we only had one window east facing, so a light was always needed in the late afternoons/evenings) 2010, June : Land bought (1700sqm, battleaxe block). That's it so far! I would love your advice please. Maybe potential grandchildren then? Gloss looks lovely but I found there were more finger prints left on the glossy ones compared to satin when we were looking at samples. Good point about the natural light into the kitchen? If you can get semi gloss that sounds like a good compromise. We built the Wisdom Majestic 40 - moved in! I really appreciate it. I will look into semi gloss or satin, as that sounds like the way to go. I need to convince my husband now. The cabinet maker is really pushing for gloss and says that most people get gloss these days. We do have a large window in the kitchen which would reflect a lot of light. Great suggestions. Thank you. Re: Matt or gloss white laminate kitchen cabinets 6Apr 19, 2012 8:52 pm The cabinet maker suggested white gloss vinyl wrap. I have heard a few negative comments about it such as if it is near heat it peels back and also you have to leave the fan on before and after cooking. Don't know if it is true or not. Originally we were going to get white laminate but now I am not sure. Any suggestions on the best type of product for the doors. Also what is best tiles or splashback. Also what type of rangehood is best, the push in one or the flu. Look forward to your reply. Thanks Re: Matt or gloss white laminate kitchen cabinets 7Apr 19, 2012 8:55 pm I'd get laminate or polyurethane, not vinyl wrap. Laminate is cheaper but some people prefer the look of polyurethane. 2010, June : Land bought (1700sqm, battleaxe block). That's it so far! We're in the design phase .... Re: Matt or gloss white laminate kitchen cabinets 8Apr 19, 2012 9:53 pm I hate using vinyl wrap in kitchen. To many issues and its not that much cheaper than polyurethane. I would say your cabinet maker is pushing gloss for a different reason. On the northern beaches of sydney gloss would account for about 30% of all kitchens. No were near "most"! Satin seems to be the finish of choice. My last doors has a detailed edge & more detail the middle of the door. Is the fashion these days to have only flat doors. I hate the stuff. I've had so many people come into my factory holding vinyl doors which have peeled. They are supposed to last the term of your kitchen 25-30 years not 3 years. For those in Melbourne, I feel sorry for you if your vinyl door was manufactured by Nu-Door in Thomastown. It's the brand that I've seen many times wanting replacement. To add to your dilema, it will cost you money to replace, as the business was sold, and the new owner will not honour any previous warranty issues. My customers have been lucky, back in the day when I had to choose a vinyl door manufacturer, I hooked up with Polytec. I've had minimal problems but I'm still wary. Those doors need to last many more years before I rest. Re: Matt or gloss white laminate kitchen cabinets 13Sep 12, 2012 10:39 pm I do remember my mother had vinyl wrapped doors but whoever made them replaced them. They claimed it was a glue problem which has been improved. Pretty sure it happened only after 5yrs. However nothing lasts 25-30yrs anymore, most people would renew a kitchen by then, however you do expect to get at least 15yrs out of a kitchen. I asked this question of one of the forum's resident cabinet makers who may/may not wish to identify himself to answer other questions if he sees this, but the rersponse… 3 7726 You can really use anything you want the main consideration would be how it looks once painted/finished - or the look you want. Cabinetmakers use MDF because its cheap… 2 9960 Thanks mate. Yeah good points! Leaning towards Option 3 to get a bit extra space in the cabinets but not going too crazy high (and expensive).
