Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Aug 04, 2011 9:39 pm Is it a no-no to have your oven and cooktop next to your fridge? It might not be ideal, but would it be really bad design-wise for any reason (or for heat factor)?. There would be a panel separating, and then a small gap between the fridge and the fridge and the cavity - so they wouldn't be butting up against each other, but for all intents and purposes, they will be right next to each other? I am just thinking of trying to re-jig my kitchen to create a bit more bench space. If you have a vertical cabinetry panel (like laminate) separating the cooktop and fridge, your cooktop will need to be a certain distance from the panel anyway because it is combustible material (I can't remember how far the regulation is off the top of my head) - so the heat wouldn't really get anywhere near the fridge, it would have to get through the panel first and that will be far enough away to hopefully not be a problem. New ovens now have so much insulation built into them and need to have room around them inside the cabinetry to account for any heat, so the heat from your oven shouldn't be an issue. Re: Oven next to fridge?? 4Aug 05, 2011 12:19 pm CA3105, I am possibly referring to oven and cooktop (maybe a standalone... not sure) but at the very least am referring to the cooktop. Then, yes, imagining a laminate (or whatever it is) panel that separates the two and is part of the cavity for the fridge (going to overhead cupboards above the fridge). Yes, it makes sense then that the cooktop would have to be a certain distance away from that panel to avoid heat and flame. I wonder what distance it would have to be...... I wonder how I can find out?? It's all just toying with ideas at the moment. If I can get rid of the microwave and toaster from the bench top (but where to put them - they didn't design a spot for the microwave can you believe??) then I will have more bench space but still only 'just enough' - maybe. So am thinking of ways I could rejig the kitchen (would need new bench top but can use the existing drawers and cupboards etc) to just make a bit more space - currently there are two smallish bench spaces either side of the oven but if I moved the oven to one side, I would create one larger, more workable area - maybe. I could move the oven to the other end of the bench, but the gas piping is on the fridge side (of course ). Thanks for the replies. Seems like it is doable. Just didn't know if it might be bad planning but that's for me to figure out taking into account the entire layout. HHCIB Re: Oven next to fridge?? 5Aug 06, 2011 9:34 pm pattycake4 In the first I had built,it had WO then cavity for fridge never had any problems An oven is one thing, but a cooktop is another. As the poster below has mentioned the problem here is the divider panel that would most likely be between the fridge cavity and the cooktop would be a little too close to the cooktop and thus make it a fire risk. As for what the minimum distance is the Westinghouse install manual for my gas cooktop says the following" Quote: 2. Adjacent walls, cupboards and protection for combustible materials. Ensure that the appliance is installed with Section 5.12.1 of AS 5601 (Australia) or section 14.1 of NZS 5261 (New Zealand), regarding clearances to combustible surfaces and materials, and clearances to rangehoods and exhaust fans. To ensure clearances of 200mm from burners to vertical combustible surfaces observe the minimum dimensions shown in Figure 5. Clearances to combustible materials may be reduced if combustible surfaces are protected in accordance with clause 5.12.1.2 of AS 5601 (Australia) or section 14.1.2 of NZS 5261 (New Zealand)." It then goes on to give some figures for mine and other models. For example for 600mm models it says a minimum of 131mm left, back and 119mm right and it also says the wall around the cooktop must be heat resistant to 90 degrees for 150mm above the bench top. I would imagine that these figures may vary a little from model to model, so maybe best to have a look at your cooktop manual and see what it says and also see if you can get a copy of AS5601. HHCIB If your cooktop is close to a vertical sheet, then you probably have to extend the cooktop splashback (glass or tiles) around to the vertical sheet separating the cooktop and fridge. Personally, I'd try to avoid having the stove top/oven that close to the fridge. You could put in a 300-450mm cupboard as a buffer between the oven/cooktop and the fridge. 2010, June : Land bought (1700sqm, battleaxe block). That's it so far! We're in the design phase ....
