Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Mar 06, 2008 6:13 pm Hi all,
Both me and wife are confused as to how many drawers in each area. I have 5 areas (A to E) where i can put the drawers. 1) Could you advise me in how many drawers in each areas, what size of each drawers? 2) Is the walkway too big? 3) the location of DW and sink? 4) Any other suggestions Note: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: my kitchen layout, pls help (revised pic/plan) 2Mar 06, 2008 6:25 pm oznow….well drawn plan, easy to read!
I guess with your cupboard and draw space, will depend on how much and what is going into them, in relation to the size. The corner where the dishwasher is drawn could pos a problem if you need to get to the back of cupboard beside the dishwasher. It’s very deep. But I can’t see a better option for it. I like draws, but perhaps you may have one set too many? Remembering that draws can’t be open at the same time as the doors. Strummer will help you also. I like to have some bench space next to the oven for when you take something out that's hot. I'm also not a big fan of those corner pantrys, but I see why people do them. Re: my kitchen layout, pls help (revised pic/plan) 5Mar 06, 2008 6:50 pm Thank you for the replies. I have updated the pic. the original draw was handwritten from builder kitchen.
- i have overhead (one the whole left side) - the quote (exclude appliances/quartz stone, and softclose drawers) is $10,000. - i want to install the necessary drawers due to budget constrain. So i might not have all the drawers in the pic. For you, which drawers can be deleted? -need advices on size of each drawers. We are family of three. wife is kind of like to cook but still confused on where to put and how to put tools, pots. pans. THANK YOU Re: my kitchen layout, pls help (revised pic/plan) 6Mar 06, 2008 7:48 pm I think you need to think about where you will put everything. Since you have overhead cabinets you can afford to lose some drawers, you can store plates in the overheads. This will save you some money.
I think I'd keep A, B and C as drawers. I was going to say A as cutlery but it's too far from your dishwasher, you really want plates and cutlery as close to dishwasher so you don't have to move whilst unpacking. Could you move the cooktop towards the pantry? To the centre of B? Then I'd have drawers for cutlery etc in C, then A and B as pot drawers. I'd have as many pot drawers as I could afford, but I think A, B and C would be sufficient. Re: my kitchen layout, pls help (revised pic/plan) 8Mar 06, 2008 9:11 pm This is what I have:
Your C: I have three drawers, top one is cutlery, second bits and bobs such as plastic bags, alu foil, etc, bottom one Tupperware, measuring jugs, all kinds of bowls. Your B: Two drawers, top one is chopping boards, herbs & spices, bottom one more bowls, strainers, salad spinner, etc. Your A: Top one is plates, bottom pans. All of these are 1000mm. Cooktop/oven are between B and A. I have more drawers on the side (3 x 2 of 700mm) for pots, baking, servingware, mugs, glasses, and a few more on my island. And also a big double cupboard and a pull-out pantry. It's all pretty full, and I don't even own that much kitchenware. I have got overhead cupboards but don't have much in them - nothing I use regularly. Re: my kitchen layout, pls help (revised pic/plan) 9Mar 06, 2008 9:41 pm After considering options and suggestions, i have revised the plan
1) Drawers in F (below oven): do i need them? 2) any typical use for having drawers in D and E? I am still thinking not to put drawers in D and E. If you have other concerns and suggestions please let me know. I need to talk to the builder soon. I was only allocated 9 standard drawers. Every upgrade cost about $70. Every new drawer will cost about $200. thanks again. Also I think that cupboards might look a bit strange under the oven, just my opinion of course!!
I would use these drawers for baking pans etc etc. and use one of hte other drawers for plastics etc. I think you can definitely do away with the drawers at D and E, you can store stuff you don't use very often here, serving platters, large appliances etc. Re: my kitchen layout, pls help (revised pic/plan) 11Mar 07, 2008 11:49 am Hi Oznow,
Great drawing. Yes put drawers under oven baking trays etc.. I put drawers in the kitchen I have now next to the dishwasher for all crockery, eg plates glasses. It makes emptying the dishwasher a breeze. this could possibly be C but do you have enough room for the dishwasher door to be open as well as those drawers? if not make the crockery drawers in D. You look like you have ample storage, well done. Paula Re: my kitchen layout, pls help (revised pic/plan) 12Mar 07, 2008 2:35 pm Make sink cabinet only as large as it has to be. once all the drains are in there it becomes a waste of space. Most people just throw their cleaning stuff in there so you dont need a 1200mm wide cabinet for that.
Floor coner cabinet in top right try and get it as close to 900x900 for ease of access. 2 small drawers and 1 big drawer doesnt really work that well. Generally the small drawers are about 144mm high and the big ones are 288mm high. one small and 2 big drawers equals 720mm high which is the heigh of your carcass. B & C having 2 small and one big you looking at 2 at 144 and one at a whopping 432mm high. Gunna need some heavy duty drawer runners. A, B and C will have uneven lines the different height drawers. Just be aware of it. I dont see a suitable place for you cutlery. Usually put in a 450mm or 600mm wide set of drawers. You may be using the small drawers around the kitchen. Be aware that you may find it hard to find drawer inserts for your knive/spoons/forks at that width. Consider getting rid of the drawers D and E and replace with 900mm wide cupboard and a 600mm wide drawer unit. Maybe 3 at 144 and one at 288 or just 4 even drawers Leave the pot drawers below Oven/Micro I'm not a big fan of that false panel you have on the back of the general storeage cabinet that you have facing away from the kitchen. Consider reducing the width so you dont have such a big panel on the inside of the kitchen. The run that has the fridge on it. consider bringing all the cabinets 100mm off the wall so the fridge depth is appro 700mm deep so that the fridge doesnt stick out too far. A 1300mm walkway is plenty, it starts to get a bit snug under 1000, especially with a fridge door there. If you want to post up some wall dimensions I'll have a crack at it for you. Re: my kitchen layout, pls help (revised pic/plan) 13Mar 07, 2008 3:11 pm HI Shady
Thanks for the reply. Your replies and others have helped me making the kitchen work for me. *i need a rather tall drawer near the cooktop, where i can put cooking oil bottle. *I will need drawers that are "standard" in size so i could find the accessories later on. *the general storage is actually to use the "corner/useless space". it could be handy to store my daughter toys etc. For the dimension see the pic below. Thanks also for your help. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: my kitchen layout, pls help (revised pic/plan) 14Mar 08, 2008 9:52 am Its just a pretty std type kitchen.
Personally I'm not a fan of angled pantry's, and I'm not exactly liking the corner in the top left with the cabinet facing outwards, but plenty of people do it and like the convienance of it. It just comes down to personal preference really I'm not really all that good using Photoshop to draw kitchens but I'm sure you get the idea. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: my kitchen layout, pls help (revised pic/plan) 15Mar 08, 2008 2:50 pm The 1300 walkway is HUGE. You could steal 300mm of it to add a cutlery drawer bank on that end of the bench and leave the double cupboards.
Either end of our island bench is 850mm and 900mm. The 900mm has the fridge opposite it, but most fridges that are over 900mm wide have 2 doors, therefore they go nowhere near close to hitting on the bench opposite, and access isn't really an issue. Just my opinion. Also, in our current rental we have one of those corner cupboards with the access from the other side, and we have found it useful for odd bits of stationary (eg, sticky tape, white out, etc) and also the bottom shelf houses all of the leftover tiles, handles, etc. Ray. Thanks also to Ray, Paula, Rachelle, Mek, Chris, D@an and Michelle for the suggestions. I am going to finalise the plan, and send it to builder tuesday.
oznow another problem with the kitchen 17Mar 17, 2008 10:30 am Hi all,
Sorry to come back again with another related question. Due to repositioning of the dishwasher and sink (because of the waste/plumbing awkward location) the galley between island bench and cooptop bench is now 1920. What is the use of such big space?? The shape of the kitchen is fixed, but can i change certain thing to make use of such space? Thanks. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: my kitchen layout, pls help (revised pic/plan) 19Mar 17, 2008 11:05 am Thanks for replying. There is an additional of 100-140mm of the sink/dw benchtop. I want to put the dw to the left of sink, but the DW will collide with the waste/plumbing, hence extend the benchtop.
But, back againt o the question. Is this width acceptable, and what can i do to take the best of use of it. It seems that the shape is almost fixed, but adjustment still can be made. any suggestions? thanks. Re: my kitchen layout, pls help (revised pic/plan) 20Mar 17, 2008 11:06 am I would drop the corner pantry in favour of a blind corner one and move the wall oven to the other wall.
Then you could increase the benchtop depth along that wall to approx 750 - 800mm (assuming you have 1920mm to play with between benchtops) Hello!
