There is a nice kitchen with a laminex splashback and joinery with an "ABS edging" - which they say "ABS is a little more expensive but gives a strong edge and cuts out the black line found on the rim of the laminate". So what is ABS in terms of the laminex (only know what ABS is to do with cars LOL)? Re: Another Question for the Kitchen Gurus 2Mar 05, 2008 3:59 pm mmm are you talking about benchtops or doors?
The black line that you see on square edge b/tops is becasue the Laminate is about 1.2mm thick and you see the black substrate. There really isnt much of a line with melamine door because it much thinner. ahhhhh! a quick google seacrh sorted it out. It seems as tho it similar to the PVC edging. The ABS edging would be colour all the way thru so therefore you wouldnt see any 'black substrate' but I dare say that you would still see a join line. ABS is also a class of plastic that is very hard but can be quite brittle. ABS is used in various car components (radiator grilles being a popular one). I have not heard of ABS being used for joinery edging though. PVC edging is quite thin and has a dark substrate. When sliced through at 45 degrees, you can see the black line. PVC edging is quite susceptible to chipping due to knocks, etc. There is also another type of edging (approx 2mm thick) that is more rubber-like (definitely not ABS). Not sure what it is called, but it is much more chip resistant (also a bit more expensive). Chris Hi, Apologies - I know there is plenty out there on this but struggling to put together the puzzle.
