Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Apr 05, 2012 8:30 pm Hi everyone, We are embarking on a renovaton and extension in the inner east of Melbourne. I will be requiring cabinet work that will cover kitchen, pantry and laundry. I have started to look into cabinet makers and noticed some are Registered Building Practitioners (RBP)and some are not. I went to the Building Commission website in Victoria and it states that any domestic building work over $5000 must be undertaken by a RBP. Further, if is over $12,000 then domestic building insurance must be provided. Also taken from the website " Because only Registered Building Practitioners meet the legal requirements to carry out domestic building work over $5,000 in Victoria. You can be confident Registered Building Practitioners have the qualifications, knowledge and experience, and domestic building insurance (where works exceed $12,000). " How important is it for you to use a Registered Building Practioner (RBP)? How do cabinet makers that are not a RBP get around this? Do they just break up the job so that each part of the job is less than $5,000? In the case they are doing work for an RBP, are they deemed a subcontractor of that builder and hence don't need to be an RBP themselves? Even though an RBP is required to have domestic building insurance, this is a last resort scheme and I question where the advantage is in using a RBP for cabinet work. I would think looking at the quality of their work and talking to some of their recent customers is more relevant than checking if they are an RBP. Comments and thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks! I have posted this before: We hired Darbecca to do every stage inspection, and I strongly recommend them to anyone that asks me. They were amazing.
