Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Apr 04, 2012 7:30 pm I would love to hear your opinions regarding what colours (specifically splash back and wall).
Initially I was planning to change the all doors and panelling however, for now, I'm going to have to keep this beech (or whatever) look of the current doors. I want to change the bench top to a black Colour but unsure what suits regarding the splash back. Considering glass but also large tiles? Also the kick boards are brown (look black) so thinking of a brushed aluminum covering. Any thoughts would be great!!! Re: Colour advice for existing kitchen (pics) 4Apr 07, 2012 9:14 am I'll change the question: Having to keep the cupboard doors and layout...what would you do to this kitchen regarding colors, benchtop, splash back etc Re: What would you do to this kitchen... (pics) 5Apr 07, 2012 10:40 am Hi mitch! Firstly. . . what kind of brushed aluminium covering were you thinking? I have a situation where we had bamboo flooring put in after the kitchen, and I'm applying brushed aluminium laminate on an MDF base over the original kickboards to cover the edges of the bamboo. Two words. . . DON'T GO THERE! I bought some laminate from ebay and some spray contact adhesive. . . I just can't compress it enough to make it stick properly. . . there are big bubbles and waves and the edges just won't stick down. . .it's a nightmare. Besides, in my opinion, beech and silver probably aren't the best match. The white tiles look in pretty good condition to me. You could change the wall colour cheaply, but I can't really see it in the picture. The kitchen isn't in-vogue, but it's not offensive either and will still look good in a few years time. If it were mine, I'd live with it as it is and save my money up for 5 years or so until I could gut it and put something in that I really liked. Re: What would you do to this kitchen... (pics) 6Apr 07, 2012 5:32 pm Thanks for the input. Much appreciated. I'll try get some bigger pics as I had to use my phone.... Benchtop is damaged so it must be replaced. Those tiles on the splasback are creamy beige with duck feature tiles...so they definitely have to go lol Just thought I'd seek some opinions seeing that I have to replace those two pieces. If the laminate is to thin it would be a nightmare to lay. Also I wouldnt use spray contact. Brush on for the DIY is far far better. Best option if your on a budget is to approach your local cabinet maker and have him layup a sheet of brushed aluminium laminate on a sheet of 3mm plywood and then rip it into the widths you need. Then fit it yourself. If this is not going to be your "keeper" kitchen, I'd just use large (white) tiles for the splashback. I wouldn't go to the expense of a glass splashback. As for the benchtop, I'd pop off a door and take it into a kitchen place and try to match a laminate for the benchtop. Not sure that black would be the number 1 colour I'd go for, but it also depends on the colour tones of the beech cupboards (yellow or pink undertone?). 2010, June : Land bought (1700sqm, battleaxe block). That's it so far! We're in the design phase .... Re: What would you do to this kitchen... (pics) 10Apr 11, 2012 7:59 am Agree with Pete. Take a door and go to a bench place and find one that compliments the doors. Get new handles and you can put tiles over tiles for the splash back ( I've seen it on tv so must be true. Saves pulling them all off) and you are done. from the pics it looks ok, but in real life, I guess not. What would you do to this kitchen... (pics) 12Apr 14, 2012 1:37 pm When we DIY our kitchen in our old house, we painted the wooden doors white, put nice handles on and a black marble bench top from Ikea and used their brushed metal splash back tile things. We just glued them on to the existing tiles, super easy and looked great and on a plus it was cheap. Good luck.
