Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Mar 31, 2012 8:50 pm Hi, I am new to this forum and would love some advice re our kitchen renovation. We were thinking about antique white laminate cabinets (matt) as well as the walls, large 600 tiles in a light beige colour. Not sure of splash back, kickboard or bench colours. Some more questions: Is it better to have door handles or the ones you just touch on the cabinets Is it better to have laminate cupboards as with vinyl wrap you have to leave the fan on until stove cools down Does gloss cabinets leave finger prints on them Should the pantry shelves be full or cut out in the centre. We desperately need the space. What colours for the splash back, kickboard and bench. Should they be darker or lighter than the cabinets. Better to get laminate bench top or ceasar stone, also colour Is it worth getting a lazy susan Any suggestions re sink and tap More deep or shallow drawers. We have a very small kitchen. I would appreciate your help as I am not to good with colours etc. I would like colours that don't date. Thanks a heap. Re: Advice needed re kitchen renovation 2May 06, 2012 9:09 pm Hi, I can't answer all your questions but here's my suggestions on some of 'em. re Handles or not - it's really a personal choice. Handles or knobs can add style to plain doors; but if you want a minimalistic streamlined look, do without. re Vinyl wrap- I've heard it melts!!! re Pantry shelves- have a look at Ikea range of shelving accessories or one of the storage places, and get shelf organisers. You'll be amazed at how much more you can fit in to the pantry with the right racks and stuff. re kitchen colours- I asked the same question on the post: "classic" kitchen colours. Have a read, there's a lot of great pics too. Classic style kitchens don't date. You will find though, it's still down to personal choice. Also post "show me your kitchen" pics are great too. re Drawers in my new kitchen one of our banks of drawers will have shallowest drawer for top drawer, then larger one below, then largest at the bottom. This bank will house cups, mugs and glasses in top drawer, second will be small plates and dishes, bottom large plates and serving platters and stuff. In other words, why not graduate sizes of drawers according to function? For a small kitchen, reflective surfaces such as the gloss cupboards will help make it look bigger. Hope this helps. . . PS forgot to add, IMO a coloured or SS kick is best- getting down on hands and knees to scrub a white kick free of shoe scuffs, marks etc is the worst!! Re: Advice needed re kitchen renovation 3May 07, 2012 4:11 pm We're in the middle of finalising our kitchen reno so will answer your questions as best I can! Is it better to have door handles or the ones you just touch on the cabinets Up to you I guess! I wanted handle-less drawers but my DH wasn't a fan and the cabinet maker kinda talked us out of them (with young kids he said they weren't the best and he said there are so many nice handles out there and handles are easy to update down the track). Is it better to have laminate cupboards as with vinyl wrap you have to leave the fan on until stove cools down I didn't want 2pac (chips) or vinyl wrap (bubbling issues) so we're going with a gloss/sheen laminate. Does gloss cabinets leave finger prints on them I haven't experienced them yet but we have white gloss furniture in the lounge and I don't find it too bad. A good point is that it is very easy to wipe clean. Easier than a textured laminate. Should the pantry shelves be full or cut out in the centre. We desperately need the space. Full I think. What colours for the splash back, kickboard and bench. Should they be darker or lighter than the cabinets. Once again up to you. We're going with white cabinets, white stone bench and a medium to dark grey glass splash back. Kickboards will be stainless steel. Better to get laminate bench top or ceasar stone, also colour I think CS is much nicer. We didn't even bother looking at anything else. We wanted a 'white' and were tossing up between Ocean Foam and White Shimmer. We have picked White Shimmer. We're getting 40mm thickness. Is it worth getting a lazy susan Perhaps - if you have a corner. We only have one corner (where the bench return is) and we're having a hidden cupboard on the other side instead. Any suggestions re sink and tap We bought a Monsoon brand tap from Grays Online. I researched sinks on here and a lot of people have Oliveri. So we looked at Oliveri's budget range (LakeLand) and picked a sink and then Googled for best price. We aren't a fan of undermount. Once again, personal decision. More deep or shallow drawers. We have a very small kitchen. We're having sets of 3. So two deeper (the same height) and then the top drawer a bit shallower. Make sure your deepest drawer will fit your tallest pot. We're having an even deeper drawer under the oven (compared to the deepest drawer in the sets of 3). I would appreciate your help as I am not to good with colours etc. I would like colours that don't date. Thanks a heap. I'm a big white fan! [! I would use 2pac every day of the week over vinyl and gloss/sheen laminate. If your 2pac is chipping you have purchased a cheap and nasty finish!!! Good quality 2pac only chips with hard hits from metal objects! That's what I mean by "chipping" though. Not that it just chips by itself!!! I have two young children and I know it would get wrecked! Renovating our 1970s home Re: Advice needed re kitchen renovation 6May 07, 2012 9:32 pm 55goal Is it better to have door handles or the ones you just touch on the cabinets We were suppose to use Hettich Push Open, but ended up with Blum TipOn (because someone didn't read the plans carefully, and the drawers ended up wider than in the plan). Just in, so don't know what they are like long term, but no handles; everything is flush. 55goal Should the pantry shelves be full or cut out in the centre. We desperately need the space. Use drawers if space is tight; that way you can pull them out and take a look right to the back. I found that both cutouts and full shelves tended to gather things right at the back. 55goal Is it worth getting a lazy susan Had them, and hate them; things kept falling off the back, which was a PITA. New kitchen has no corners, so no need for such devices. I have a 2 and 4 year old and my poly looks as good as the day I put it in. Your cabinet maker might use a cheap 2pac sprayer! If the job is done properly it will look better for longer than laminate and vinyl. Remember that damage will also be done on vinyl and gloss laminate with the same impact! I really dont see why 2pac gets such a bad rep. Laminate scratches and the new gloss ones fade, vinyl dents, melts and delaminates. 2pac is the only product that can be repaired, repainted or have the colour completly changed in 10 years time. I know I keep going on about 2pac in these forums but I really want people to be informed that it is a great product and better than most out there! We find it great, we've had a few chips over the years but it's been from banging a pot right on the edge/corners, no chips/damage at all on the 'front' of the doors. It's a breeze to clean, and looks stunning. Benchtop we've gone with Caesarstone Nougat. And as Dreamer said before we also have 3 drawers under the bench in most places we could, 2 larger ones down the bottom and a cutlery type depth on top. For the kickback we currently have full gloss white poly also, however I'm debating whether we do this again in our new place we're planning.
