Re: Do you think this kitchen layout works? 3Mar 14, 2012 9:54 am Hi, I prefer it with the sink in the middle. Also agree with DanniB, what about having more overhead cupboards and Im not sure on the roller door thing... esp both ends. Maybe make the pantry a little wider to incorporate toaster etc on one shelf?? Re: Do you think this kitchen layout works? 4Mar 14, 2012 10:00 am danniB Looks good to me. I like it more than the original on your house plan. Have you considered having overhead cupboards all the way along with an undermounted rangehood? It gives you more storage & I feel it looks more finished (that's just a personal opinion). We're currently undecided about including overhead cupboards along the wall. DH has a preference not to include them, because he wants it to look expansive and spacious along the wall. I also want that, but being me, I want as much storage space as I can get. We know we can fit all our current gear into the kitchen as it is planned now, but we wouldn't have much left over storage space. DH reckons if we have too much storage that is empty, it's an open invitation for me to buy more appliances, casserole dishes and serving plates. (He's probably right, but I don't want to admit that). So, not sure ..... I prefer the look of an undermounted rangehood, so that what we will be putting in regardless. It will just be built in with an empty carcus around it. 2010, June : Land bought (1700sqm, battleaxe block). That's it so far! We're in the design phase .... Maybe make the pantry a little wider to incorporate toaster etc on one shelf?? My preference is to have the sink towards the display cabinet so that it's not immediately visible when you walk into the main common area. I would really like not to have the sink on the island at all, but that's my big compromise for the kitchen (well, so far it's been the biggest compromise in the kitchen, I have finally resigned myself to it). However, I know the trend is to centre the sink on the island bench .... One roller door cabinet is for DH's coffee machine & the kettle. Other roller door cabinet is for the toaster and bread. I suppose we could get rid of the roller door cabinets and just leave the appliances on the bench? Don't want to put the toaster in the pantry cupboard - our toaster gets used every day, it needs to be in a place where it can be used immediately without hassle. 2010, June : Land bought (1700sqm, battleaxe block). Re: Do you think this kitchen layout works? 6Mar 14, 2012 10:45 am No keep the roller door, they are great, I'm planning on incorporating one in my kitchen design. I like the sink to one end, I have been wondering whether to build up one corner of the breakfast bar to help hide mess - which effectively is what you have with your display cabinet. Go the extra overheads....more cupboards is always a great thing! lol Re: Do you think this kitchen layout works? 7Mar 14, 2012 10:54 am Much prefer your new layout and I'm OK with sink in the island bench - that's what we're having. I'm not a great fan of the roller door thing but they are useful to hide appliances away. A couple of alternatives would be: (a) Use an "up & over" door instead i.e. which looks just like the other doors but has hinges which allow it to be pulled out slightly and then lifted up in front of the door above (iykwim). Same effect but doesn't spoil the look in the way I think the roller doors do. We are having a door like this to hide the microwave. (b) have the roller doors on the other wall of the cabinet so that they are opposite each other at either end of the bench instead of facing outwards. That way you can pull the appliances out onto the benchtop to use them and then put back behind the roller doors when not in use and the roller doors are not nearly so visible / obvious. My only other comment is - go with what your gut tells you - I'm a great believer in the gut instinct of what feels right for you. That sounds quite good. I will investigate that further ..... The rollerdoor cupboards will sit back on the bench anyway as they are the same depth as an overhead cupboard. Once the roller door is lifted, appliances can be pulled forward. However, we didn't think about facing them towards each other. .... that's another thought to consider. Thanks for that. 2010, June : Land bought (1700sqm, battleaxe block). That's it so far! We're in the design phase .... Re: Do you think this kitchen layout works? 9Mar 14, 2012 1:49 pm I would face the roller door cabinets towards each other. I would have the 300mm wide and full depth of the bench top. Similar to this kitchen I did a few years ago. I dont like how short this kitchen is. It would have looked alot better 3-400mm higher. Unfortunately the window was already there. The two doors above the sink are the "up and over" doors. They use a Blum Aventos HK mechanism. I have mine centred on our island and it's an absolute pain. If it was down towards one end it gives you a large expanse of working area. If in the centre you get two smaller work areas. I wish I could redo mine. I love your layout though:) Handover February 2011 Happy with our home Re: Do you think this kitchen layout works? 11Mar 14, 2012 2:10 pm CuttingEdgeKitchens I would face the roller door cabinets towards each other. Can you still get to the contents of the rollador cabinet when the main door is opened? 2010, June : Land bought (1700sqm, battleaxe block). That's it so far! We're in the design phase .... Re: Do you think this kitchen layout works? 12Mar 14, 2012 2:14 pm I am a huge fan of utility cupboards but I don't like the look of the roller doors (just my opinion)- although it is slightly better when facing the inside. I like the idea of having kettle, toaster and coffee machine in the one spot. I have drawn the utility cupboard on the left but it could go on the right. I would put bifold doors on them - I have always had 1200mm wide utility cupboards but could work smaller. I like the fact that you can have all of the essentials to make toast and a cuppa right there at your fingertips (just milk from fridge). Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Sink down towards one end would be my preference also! Re: Do you think this kitchen layout works? 13Mar 15, 2012 6:20 am Pete_n_Pet Thanks for that. The main door opens and shows a laminated side of the roller shutter cabinet. I supose you could have part of it cut out so you can get access from both sides. You would need a 100mm strip at the front though for the shutte mechanism. Re: Do you think this kitchen layout works? 17Mar 15, 2012 3:25 pm I like that a kitchen plan has some symmetry but I don't think that a kitchen needs to be a mirror image of itself to work - does that make sense?? Colours and material will help to bring a look together. Just another thought. Have you considered having just 2 linen cupboards instead of 3 which would allow you to move the door along to get an even longer kitchen. If you did that it would allow you to add an extra pantry cupboard. Move the utility cupboard to the fridge end (and the island along a little) which would also help with symmetry . This would give you the extra storage while maintaining the look of space with no overhead cupboards. I'm not sure if this allows enough room for your dining table???
