Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Mar 06, 2012 7:31 pm Currently, in our house plans, we have a 4000mm x 1000mm island bench which will have drawers on one side, with sink, dishwasher and underbench microwave (600mm deep). The other side will overhung to be a breakfast bar. So, today was first time I have looked around in kitchen stores to see about making a dream meet reality. I had a rude shock. I was told that the maximum length that engineered stone (quantum quartz, caesar stone, essa, etc) will come is 3.5-3.6m long and if I wanted an island bench longer than that, I would have a join in the bench. I was told the best lengths were 3m or less. Is this true? I would really like to keep the length of the bench at 4m but if it means a join, I think we will have to shorten it. Thanks Peta 2010, June : Land bought (1700sqm, battleaxe block). That's it so far! We're in the design phase .... Re: How long can an island bench be without a join? 2Mar 06, 2012 8:42 pm To my knowledge most Caesarstone colours come in 3000mm lengths. I think there are a few colours that you might be able to get in a longer sheet. Re: How long can an island bench be without a join? 6Mar 06, 2012 9:02 pm Caesarstone slabs are only about 3.1m long so as others have said a 3m island will be the biggest you can do in 1 piece. Re: How long can an island bench be without a join? 9Mar 06, 2012 9:47 pm I am having a 4m Island bench with sink at one end with high back around it , and other half 2m end is for sitting at with essastone. My cabinetmaker told me last week that they will put a join at where the sink is, in the middle, so you will only see a very small section of join as sink is in the middle. Hope you understand what I mean, but this could be done with yours as well. We were having an open island bench, so I would be concerned the join would be more obvious, particularly as you walk toward the bench and sit across from the sink.... 2010, June : Land bought (1700sqm, battleaxe block). I will try to get into a few kitchen shops over the next few days and see a few benches with joins. Get a feel for how obvious the join would be in a flat open bench. We were planning on having an undermount sink but maybe a regular sink would be better? (it sounds like the joint would be put through the sink area.) Kyton, who did you get to do your kitchen? Re: How long can an island bench be without a join? 13Mar 06, 2012 11:57 pm Our island bench sounds like yours and is just over 4metres and totally open. Our join is right in the middle of the bench and it's really not that noticeable. We have essa stone crystal salt, so I think the join was easy to blend in with the bench. We didn't have it where the sink was, because our sink is right over at one end of the bench with drainer grooves and it would've been across the grooves, so we just had it central instead. Re: How long can an island bench be without a join? 14Mar 07, 2012 6:42 am What about doing a 2 level bench similar to these. I have seen some in display houses and they can look really nice. One display had one section as a 40mm bench and beside it set a little bit lower a 20mm bench. You could even do 2 different colours at different levels. Just another idea. http://i1006.photobucket.com/albums/af187/Kaytee50/kitchen2.jpg http://i1006.photobucket.com/albums/af187/Kaytee50/kitchen1.jpg A balanced diet is chocolate in both hands. Between you and Kyton, I'm starting to think maybe it won't be such a big deal .... although we were thinking of going for a dark stone, so that might make a difference. 2010, June : Land bought (1700sqm, battleaxe block). So, across the 4m length it might be split up as 1.4m in colour A, 1.2m in colour B and then 1.4m in colour A again. Or maybe that would just look dicky? 2010, June : Land bought (1700sqm, battleaxe block). That's it so far! We're in the design phase .... How long can an island bench be without a join? 17Mar 07, 2012 7:38 am My stone is a fairly dark colour - it is discontinued now but is called Ming Blue in c'stone. We had our kitchen designed and cabinetry built by Valley Kitchens however the stonemason we used I would never recommend (not for ** work but rather ** and untrustworthy work practices).
