Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Feb 18, 2012 3:29 pm Hi guys I can't quite find the answer to my question anywhere. Do I need to include an EXHAUST FAN in my Walk In Pantry? It will house the kettle, toaster and microwave. The room is 4m x 1.5m. Anyone out there found they have had trouble with moisture from the steam, without using an exhaust fan? Thanks BLOG: thehousewebuilt2010.blogspot.com (And are still building!) Re: Is an exhaust fan needed in the WIP? 2Feb 18, 2012 4:57 pm Hi DanniB, No NEED to include an exhaust fan unless you want to. I have never had an exhaust fan in any of my homes with no problems. Great size WIP, by the way!! Re: Is an exhaust fan needed in the WIP? 3Feb 18, 2012 5:12 pm Thanks Rocketship. I never even gave the exhaust fan a thought except now I have a Mother in Law who is carrying on about exhaust fans and steam and moisture and mold and all the rest of it, which got me thinking! I have my microwave in there and I have an exhaust fan. Most times it doesn't get used but every now and then cooking things like vegies it can be a little stinky. Personally if I had a kettle and toaster as well and no windows then I would err on the side of caution and install one. Some things are worth waiting for. I was nagged to have drains in the middle of the floors in bathrooms and the laundry from my mother in law. I dont regret ignoring her at all. If you don't want it, and don't think it's necessary, just don't worry about it. Is an exhaust fan needed in the WIP? 9Feb 19, 2012 7:35 am Just one question - is it only because your MIL suggested it that you are fighting it? My way of thinking is not so much the steam that needs a fan but the smells. Imagine the toaster burning something. A small enclosed space means that smells lingers quite a while. There is a window but you cant have that open all the time. Anyway, the builders forgot and by the time I noticed it it was apparently too late. What they suggested was a vented skylight. It was cheaper than I imagined and I must say I like it and would have one again for lighting purposes. The vent part - meh. Maybe if it was a mechanical vent it would be better. Now that we are in, Maybe I didn't need the vent after all? Re: Is an exhaust fan needed in the WIP? 13Feb 19, 2012 11:01 pm Quote: In some states you wouldn't have a choice. We dont have an exhaust fan in our pantry - but it is a smallish pantry only for storage - If I was doing any cooking in a WIP. ie if I had a microwave, toaster, kettle etc in there, I would have a small exhaust fan - partly for smells and also for moisture - food stored in pantries, like spuds, jam etc is best in cool dry place so moisture and warmth lingering from cooking doesn't seem a good idea. Sorry, I'm with the MIL on this one. Re: Is an exhaust fan needed in the WIP? 15Feb 20, 2012 9:04 am Put the exhaust fan in. We have a freezer in our WIP and it gets hot in there. If you're going to use a kettle of toaster I would definitely have one. I'll be putting a fan in our WIP really soon as the heat from the freezer in a small room with no flow can make the heat build up quickly. It means we have to have the pantry door open a lot of the time. My home office is hot with computer equipment running virtually 18 hours a day.
