Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Feb 16, 2012 7:47 pm Hi, I would like to get some opinions on how many banks/columns of drawers for a 3000 x 1200 island bench. The island bench will have 80mm caesarstone benchtop with waterfall ends amd overhang for stools. This leaves 2740mm for the cabinet work. The island bench will be as is - that is no sinks or cooktops. On one side of the island will be drawers and the other side will be cupboards (on the benchtop overhang side). On the drawer side, each bank of drawers will be configured so the top drawer is 200mm high and the 2 remaining drawers will be then of equal height with remaining height left over. What I am not sure of is do I go with 3 or 4 banks/columns of drawers? That is either approx 900mm or 685mm wide drawers? Also note that I want to put power points in one of the top drawers (It will be a fake drawer, and the face of the drawer will be hinged where you pull down on it to reveal power points) as I did not want to cut holes into the waterfall ends of stone. Opinions? Thanks! 3000 X 1200 Island Bench - How many banks of drawers? 2Feb 16, 2012 8:24 pm I would have to go an even amount LOL. My island is 1200 x 4000mm but it houses the sink and dishwasher. So in the work side I have drawers then a single cupboard then a double cupboard followed by another single cupboard then dishwasher then another set of drawers - so it is "even". Then across the front there are eight narrow cupboards under the overhang (four on each end) with a raised servery in the centre comprising of another four cupboards (this forms the splash for the sink). I have to have symmetry so the cupboards across the front and rear had to look balanced. Pedantic I know LOL. Some things are worth waiting for. 3000 X 1200 Island Bench - How many banks of drawers? 3Feb 16, 2012 8:44 pm My island is just over 3m and I have the dishwasher, double cupboard (under the sink) and then two banks of drawers, one metre wide each. --------------------- Sent from my mobile device so please excuse my typing missed cakes. ~ trying to build our dream home by the sea ~ Re: 3000 X 1200 Island Bench - How many banks of drawers? 4Feb 17, 2012 6:18 am I would go for three banks of drawers IMHO - nothing like nice wide drawers. You also have to take into consideration that for every bank of drawers you lose 16mm each side for the carcass (cabinetry is measured as the external length, not internal), and probably another 30 mm each side for the drawer mechanism itself. So if you went with four drawer banks, each drawer would be only 593mm wide internally, compared to the 685mm external width. Re: 3000 X 1200 Island Bench - How many banks of drawers? 5Feb 17, 2012 7:08 am Our island bench is 2500 x 900mm - we are having one set of cutlery drawers (400) and then three sets of 700 wide draws ....... We are having an upstand on one end and will be having 2 cupboards underneath this on the 'other' side. Our kitchen is going in today, so will be able to post photos later today hopefully....but this is a pic of a model I made up: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Our building thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=51657 Re: 3000 X 1200 Island Bench - How many banks of drawers? 6Feb 17, 2012 8:18 am I would go for 3 banks. 900mm is a good usiable width. 4 banks could start to look very busy. I would also go for 3 banks as I love the 900mm wide drawers as there is definitely more usable space. And I like your idea of having 3 drawers, the top one being 'shallower' because you can then put herbs/spices, or utensils or whatever you like that needs to be easily accesible. It will look great! Re: 3000 X 1200 Island Bench - How many banks of drawers? 9Jun 21, 2012 10:07 pm lewster What I am not sure of is do I go with 3 or 4 banks/columns of drawers? That is either approx 900mm or 685mm wide drawers? I would choose the three 900mm wide banks of drawers using good quality (preferably soft close) runners. It's easy to load up wide drawers and good quality hardware will ensure a long life. lewster Also note that I want to put power points in one of the top drawers (It will be a fake drawer, and the face of the drawer will be hinged where you pull down on it to reveal power points) as I did not want to cut holes into the waterfall ends of stone. We tucked a double power-point (Clipsal Saturn) under each top corner of the front of bench overhang. They're hidden from view unless you look and are accessible when we need them. This allowed us to have clean waterfall edges and we didn't loose any drawer space. Re: 3000 X 1200 Island Bench - How many banks of drawers? 10Jun 22, 2012 10:38 am Our Island bench is 3.3m including 60mm end panels. We have two banks of ~700mm draws, 600mm dishwasher, 770mm double sink unit and 450mm bin unit. I'd definitely be going longer drawers than shorter. I would definitely incorporate a pull out bin. They are a great addition. As for power point, I've thought of mounting a power board in one of the top drawers such that the cord coils at the back and plugs into the dishwasher point. 3000 X 1200 Island Bench - How many banks of drawers? 11Jun 22, 2012 9:02 pm Wow 80mm ceasarstone. I'd love to see it? It's usually 20mm CS with a mitred edge; if done well, as in some sample work I've seen, it looks excellent, and the joint isn't visible. The grain is also continuous through that 80mm, so looks like one thick piece. Our main island is 80mm - so yes the actual slab on top is a 20mm slab then we have an 80mm apron across the front and back with 80mm waterfalls on each edge. Both the aprons and waterfall edges are boxed in so it looks like a solid piece of stone 80mm thick looking from underneath / each side. Our raised servery in the centre is 40mm which is just two slabs joined together. Some things are worth waiting for. Pulse is correct. It's the trap that takes up space.
