Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Feb 07, 2012 10:14 pm Hi, we are trying to finalize our kitchen options and are going with quantum quartz benchtops and reasonable high end appliances. The kitchen with be modern look in a 140 year old cottage with original polished floors. We are opening up the roof with sky lights in the kitchen to give more light. So down to the sink and tap.. Nearly my last decision. Builder has convinced me to go with a top mount sink. I am happy with that. Questions does anyone use a drainer? I am thinking of putting a double sink or a one and three quarter sink combo but with no drainer. Reason is aesthetics and to save bench space for something I am not sure we will really use with a dishwasher. What is your experience? Next I am trying to find a nice modern looking sink with a thin profile where it overlaps. Any ideas? Taps now....anyone with the fancy pull out taps? Any probs? Glad to finish the decisions soon and start seeing it built! Re: Top mount sink in stone: drainer or no drainer and taps 2Feb 07, 2012 11:35 pm Hmmmm.... Can I ask, what did the builder say to convince you to go with the top mounted sink? I'm going with the undermount because I like the sleekness of the look. I have never had an under mounted sink before and I'm worried about not having the drainer!! Sorry I can't help... I'm just curious about what led to your decision to have the top mount instead of the under mount with beautiful, sleek stone bench tops Re: Top mount sink in stone: drainer or no drainer and taps 3Feb 08, 2012 9:13 am We are going with a double undermount sink and are getting a sink drainer as an accessory. This is a tray which fits over the top of one of the sinks and acts as a drainer. Most of the time we don't need to use 2 sinks so leave it in place but just occasionally it's handy to have 2 sinks. It also means you don't need to decide which side to have the drainer - if your sinks are the same size then you can swap the drainer over The Abey range of sinks have some "knife edge" top mount sinks - the Barazza Select if you like the design or the Cubo; but they are quite pricy - probably around $1200 - $1500.The Oliveri Professional Series also has a low profile edge; not sure of price but may be a bit cheaper. Yes, I admit, I've been stressing over kitchen sinks and now know far too much about them - must get a life Our Homebuilding Thread 17th Nov - 1st meeting with PJB architect 27th Feb - Signed contract 23rd Mar - Plans approved 3rd Apr - Slab laid 18th Apr - Roof On 10th May - Lock-up 26th June - Handover Re: Top mount sink in stone: drainer or no drainer and taps 4Feb 09, 2012 2:47 pm We are building a country styled house but with a modern kitchen. We also have a quantum quartz benchtop (starlight black) and had been warned off having an undermount sink with a dark benchtop just in case it gets chipped on the edge of the sink. We've got an Afa exact sink from Reece Plumbing. We love it as it looks like an undermount (you can also use it as an undermount). We bought a separate draining board as an accessory. The stainless steel draining board has little rubber feet so it can either go over one side of the sink, or you can have both sinks free and have the draining board on the bench with just the draining hole overlapping the edge of one of the sinks. The sink was really reasonably priced too. We got it for $680 Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ The tap we chose is the Dorf Jovian Sink Mixer, installed on the bench behind the sink. I LOVE it. Cost $300. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ They've both been installed but I haven't taken any photos yet. We have 1 and 1/2 sinks and a drainer - DH loves to wash up! He also hates the way the dishwasher cleans cutlery and also there are lots of things we don't put in the dw - saucepans, baking trays, etc etc so we do use the drainer a lot. We have plenty of room though so in your case one of those separate draining boards sounds like a good idea ... Re: Top mount sink in stone: drainer or no drainer and taps 6Feb 09, 2012 3:47 pm We have a top mount with drainer and its working very well, its an abbey Schok sink, looks and feels awesome..... funny I never thought I would ever make a comment like that lol. Others may disagree, but we stayed at a unit once that had a square stainless sink, and we found them very hard to keep clean. They had a very flat base and didnt seem to drain well, and the corners were grime magnets, I guess there are many differing designs. Re: Top mount sink in stone: drainer or no drainer and taps 9Feb 09, 2012 5:41 pm This is my second kitchen with stone benches and both times I have chosen a double sink with a drainer. I like the look of undermounts but for practicality a drainer is easier. Also it is somewhere to put hot things - I know you can put them on the stone but I was told if you treat it like you would laminate then it will stay looking nicer longer. Re: Top mount sink in stone: drainer or no drainer and taps 10Feb 09, 2012 6:09 pm I love the flush mount inset sink, they are much sleeker in my opinion than an undermount, no worries about chipping or grime around the edges. The Barazza cubo is a beautiful sink, but does not have drain boards, is flushmount but expensive http://i1237.photobucket.com/albums/ff468/gogo65/barazzasink.jpg We decided to go with this Barazza because it had the drain board and also flush but for around $1500 they are definitely an upgrade from an undemount Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Top mount sink in stone: drainer or no drainer and taps 11Feb 10, 2012 3:17 pm We've got the Brazza Cube double sink flush mounted for around $1700. It was pricey, but the square look blends in very well with the rest of the kitchen, including the taps etc. One of the biggest reasons we chose this sink was the optional accessories like a drainer which can simply rest over one half of the sink. http://www.abey.com.au/Products/tabid/6 ... goryID=447 The double sink is quite massive and with a dishwasher installed right underneath, most of the dishes eventually end up there, as for the rest they dry up on the drainer. P.S. The drainer also helps in camouflaging some of the dirty dishes when put on top of the sink! Re: Top mount sink in stone: drainer or no drainer and taps 12Feb 14, 2012 8:30 pm Thanks.. I love both the Alfa sink and the Abbey Schock sink. Any other experience with these composite sinks? Screen7 what tap is that matched with your schock sink? Are these any harder on dishes ie more chips or glass breakages? Now to work out where to see these in Hobart. Re: Top mount sink in stone: drainer or no drainer and taps 14Feb 18, 2012 5:36 pm Ok we picked out the Franke Mythos mtg 620 granite sink : no drainer: should look good with our caesarstone ocean foam bench and the Siemens black ceramic glass gas We matched it with a Franke Kubus tap with pull out spray Ta 6801 Re: Top mount sink in stone: drainer or no drainer and taps 15Jul 03, 2015 9:37 am How do you find the sink? I want to put one in but worried about scratches Re: Top mount sink in stone: drainer or no drainer and taps 16Jul 03, 2015 9:18 pm We will be having Essastone with an Abey sink, Piazza Plus without a drainer, with the accessories that go with it. Can't comment on how it functions as we're not in our house yet, hoping I love it. Good luck Loving our new home, Upper Hunter NSW on 2.5 acres Re: Top mount sink in stone: drainer or no drainer and taps 17Jul 04, 2015 6:08 pm We are having the Abey Lago sink- http://www.abey.com.au/store/sinks/kitc ... bowl-sink/, with the Abey Luz-1 tap http://www.abey.com.au/store/kitchen/ar ... ull-mixer/ No drainer Re: Top mount sink in stone: drainer or no drainer and taps 18Jul 15, 2015 12:50 am Our current kitchen has double undermount sink with no drainer. We have chipped the edge of the granite benchtop at the sink, but on the dark granite it's not really noticeable. Regardless of the risk of chipping, our new kitchen will have another undermount sink because I love that I can wipe the messy bench straight into the sink. Our stonemason made the edges at the sink a little more tapered to reduce the risk of chipping. I'm thinking of getting something to cover the edge while washing pots & pans, although I'm not too worried about it. What I have missed in current kitchen is a draining board. We got the draining basket that fits inside the 2nd sink. Benefit is that the rack of clean dishes left to dry in the sink takes up less bench space and is less visible. Trouble is, the reason we got double sink was so you have somewhere to tip dirty water etc when one sink has washing up water. To be able to use that second sink the dish rack has to be taken out, but then it drips all over the bench. What is worse is my hubby's lazy habit of emptying dirty cups & bowls into that second sink even when the clean dishes are in there! And worse still the muck in the sink gets left there because it's hidden by the clean dishes drying in the sink! So my new sink will be like the one pictured by gogo65 - double with drainer - undermounted, but with rounded corners, and only $329 including delivery! Bathroom renovation will likely include a back-to-corner bath and we’re considering a freestanding tap with hand-held shower such as the picture included.
