Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Feb 14, 2012 5:52 am Hello
We are currently renovating and I would love some assistance! I am looking at a Schweigen Undermount Rangehood (60cm) over a 60cm gas cooktop. This rangehood has 1100m (cubic) net extraction. The lady at the kitchen place / joinery is suggesting that we don't have vinyl wrap doors on the cabinets above as it may peel. We are probably going to get vinyl matt doors all round the kitchen - I have read all the comments on 2 pac however thinking the $2-3k we save will let me get new doors in 7-8 yrs if things go pearshaped and it falls off! We have little children and a very light north facing kitchen so i don't want the fingerprints on glossy finish. I would have thought with a rangehood that powerful if we use it whenever cooking (and it has motor in ceiling so shouildn't be annoyingly noisy) we shouldn't have any steam issues. The end of the U shaped kitchen will be a walk in pantry so we won't have any kettle, toaster or any steam causing appliances in the kitchen itself (other than dishwasher, oven, microwave which I believe should be protected anyway). Would appreciate the thoughts of someone more knowledgeable than I! Sarah Re: Undermount rangehood and vinyl doors 2Feb 14, 2012 1:34 pm I have a schweigen undermount rangehood with vinyl wrap doors above it. No problems so far - we have been in our house about 8 months. We were concerned about peeling too but the cabinet maker didn't believe it was an issue. Re: Undermount rangehood and vinyl doors 3Feb 15, 2012 7:34 am I'm pretty sure that good quality vinyl wrap doors (from reputable companies) are tested to withstand 70C for several hours without delamination. I can't imagine you'd have a problem. Vinyl wrap manufacturers still recommend that you don't have a toaster or a kettle directly under cabinetry, but I really think this is overkill given that the cabinets would never reach 70C for even 5 min under these conditions. Also, the Schweigen is top notch - it's pretty much gonna create a slight vacuum in your entire kitchen area, so you should be fine!! Canopy and Undermount are best, and need to be ducted externally. Which one you go with will be largely determined by your design and joinery choices.
