My kitchen is about to be measured up and made so unfortunately I cant show you our interpretation of it yet. What sort of colours are you looking at? Good luck finalising your plans! Just got home from work, 'twas a long day, tomorrow promises to be another long day at work, both with a really early start and then finishing work in the evening and then catching a plane away for a couple of days ! Hopefully I'll be able to check in while I'm away, if not, keep talking among yourselves, keep those ideas flowing and I'll be back Wednesday PM or Thursday AM !! As much as I love gas cooking, Mrs P_D seems to have her heart set on an induction cooktop, the trouble I'm having is that I cannot find any bad reports about them to talk her out of them !! We haven't thought too much about colours, but going with the display-home popular, "open plan" look, we're probably going to go for some sort of "all-white" colour scheme with some stand-out "not-white" highlights........ We think !! Keep up the good work, see you in a couple of days Cheers, P_D . Dee I am sure I would have been very happy with induction, but DH is a gas man (as in, he has worked for the gas company or managing projects with gas his whole life) so no compromise here. Gas or divorce Not sure that it really matters most will boil a saucepan of water for my rice and pasta wont they Re: Please help us design our kitchen ! 27Jan 30, 2012 9:05 pm Ummm honey-you do know that you have to take the saucepan out of the box and put water in it first don't you? I do love the induction now though! Seems like I've got a lot to learn about cooking !!! Seriously though, the only thing that has got me a touch concerned about induction is woks ! I love wok cooking and I'm worried about getting a heap of heat into the wok with induction, even though I've been assured that you can get flat-bottom woks that work great on induction. Having said that, we're going to get a built-in gas BBQ in the alfresco, so I'll probably get one with a wok-burner on the side of it, then hopefully that'll be the best of both worlds !! P_D . P_D Unless you get an induction wok burner, induction is poor with woks, as the focused heating area, which is great for normal cooking, is poor for woks. Hence why, even as an induction fan, we will still get a wok burner. The wok burner on the gas BBQ is fine if you don't need high heat, otherwise even the portable gas burners from Asian grocers or Bunnings work better IMHO. I have found our outdoor BBQ to be a little weak for heavy duty wok cooking but I was still going to but a built in BBQ wok burner in our alfresco area. Your post has saved me a few $$$$ as I think I'll get a portable wok burner instead Re: Please help us design our kitchen ! 34Feb 05, 2012 11:43 am Well......There's something I never knew !!! After doing some research, I can report that gas burners are rated in Mj/h, that much I was aware of ........... A current-model "typical" Westinghouse (natural) gas cooktop is rated as follows ........ The "small" burner 5.1 Mj/h The "medium" burner 9.0 Mj/h The "large" burner 12.1 Mj/h The "wok burner" 14.4 Mj/h Moving on ................ I'm considering a BBQ Galore BBQ, natural gas, built-in......... The bbq burners 15 Mj/h The side wok burner 17 Mj/h A sampling of some random eBay "special" stand-alone cast-iron wok-burner rings.......... One ring 12 Mj/h Two ring 20 Mj/h Three ring 30 Mj/h Four ring 52 Mj/h Four ring high pressure 65 Mj/h One issue is that these stand-alone units seem to only be LPG, that sort of defeats the purpose for us as we're looking to get the BBQ plumbed into the main natural gas line !! So, my question, to myself and others, is that as I am currently using the "large" burner on our cooktop, we'll say it's around the 10 Mj/h - 12 Mj/h range, am I going to be happy with the built-in looks / style / convenience of a 17 Mj/h side-burner, or do I get a (let's be honest) butt-ugly stand-alone burner and still have to worry about LPG, but having heaps of Mj/h 's to burn, say in the 30 Mj/h - 40 Mj/h range ?? (Oh wait, an unintended funny...."to burn"...get it ?? ) Hmmmm............ Your thoughts ?? P_D . LPG tend to have a higher caloric value, hence the higher output. The 17MJ side burner is pretty decent; several I've tried aren't as hot as those butane stoves I've mentioned.
