We're currently at the "Design" stage for a new home.
We spent months drawing our "dream home" plans using CAD software before we approached a builder, but no matter how hard we tried we couldn't get the kitchen "right".
To tell the truth, we couldn't get a kitchen plan at all.
We were not all that worried as we figured that the builder would be able to fix this for us.
Well........It's like this !!
This drawing shows the constraints we're working with, the RED walls are pretty much non-negotiable.
Well, negotiable in that the rest of the house will need to be redesigned if the red walls are moved, something that while we're prepared to do, it's something we REALLY prefer not to have to do !!!

We're not really happy with this design, there is very little bench space and none on the west side, that is, next to the refrigerator / freezer and wall ovens.
Also, Mrs P_D would like more space between the "kitchen" and the island bench.
While we DO like the really big pantry, we think that as it is, it's a little bit too extravagant, there's no issue taking some of that area and putting it in the "kitchen".
The south wall (next to the refrigerator / freezer) could be a little bit longer so that coming up the hallway you don't immediately look into the kitchen.
I took the plans to work and a guy there came up with something like this ...........

As you can see, it's completely different, a sort-of "U-Shaped" design if you will.
We think we like this "idea" a lot more then the builders plan, but it too needs work...........
We're not happy with the location of the refrigerator / freeze and we think that it's taking too much room out of the family room / dining room area.
In the design brief we specified that we wanted a large family room area, and we think that this modified kitchen design takes a bit too much room from the family room area.
Our design brief goes something like this...........
- Steps from garage to kitchen to be in corner of garage (unfortunately this does mean that they're pretty much in the middle of the western kitchen wall).
Provision for two ovens, prefer side-by-side, but will consider one above the other
900mm induction cooktop
Walk-in pantry
Provision for (our current) pigeon-pair refrigerator / freeze (total 1500mm width)
Really prefer not to have the sink on the island bench, or if so, a really cunning way of hiding dirty dishes from view from the family room.
Any thoughts would be REALLY appreciated !!
Thanks,
P_D
