Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Jan 11, 2012 12:59 pm Hi, I have loved the moodboards that I have seen on homeone so I tried to create my own very basic kitchen moodboard. We have already ordered the tapware, sink, cooktop and set on the floorboards. We are yet to finalise everything else so like everything I decided on..... it will probably change..... but at this stage looking at a white caesarstone benchtop, black and white gloss cupboards.... here is my attempt at bringing my ideas together..... Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Given my very limited computer skills I have tried to create a drawing of our new kitchen using google sketchup. I watched the first couple of tutorials so I only learnt the very basics but here is my idea of how the kitchen is going to look.... Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ We were thinking that we like the idea of a dark, smokey, reflective type splashback... then recently our thinking changed to a mirror finish, then once I started to do some drawing we started thinking white and now we have decided to do a green front door and all of a sudden thought maybe we should go for a green splashback. Any thoughts???? Thanks heaps, Rocketship. Re: Kitchen Colour advice 2Jan 11, 2012 1:49 pm I think the green splashback would look very striking, but I'm afraid that I would tire of it quite quickly. Based on the colours you've chosen for bench and cabinetry, I think a plain mirror splashback would look very sophisticated and beautiful. You could then add accent pieces on the bench (in front of the splashback) to tie into the green door colour. As it's a very monochromatic colour scheme, you'd want to be careful about your wall colour too. Perhaps either something very white, or with a slight grey tinge to it. Don't know if you've already got your appliances, but Smeg do a range of ovens with a lovely mirror like finish that would complement a mirror splashback. Nice work with sketchup, by the way; I've been hacking along with it myself for a while now, it's fantastic software! Re: Kitchen Colour advice 3Jan 11, 2012 5:25 pm Thanks Mr Zebra for your response. Yes, the wall colour will be white. I had a catch up with 4 of my good girlfriends this afternoon who all said something different. One said green, one said white, one said black and other said mirror.....thanks girls..... that didn't help me!! But maybe it made me realise that whatever we decide they will all look great (or crap - depending on your taste). I don't actually have to order my splashback for a while but I do have to order my kitchen in a few weeks and the colour of the splashback will probably decide the colour of the upright part on the island bench. Re: Kitchen Colour advice 5Jan 11, 2012 7:22 pm The style of the house is definately modern... check out the photos on my building thread... don't have to read it all but there is plenty of photos of the build so far.... Re: Kitchen Colour advice 6Jan 11, 2012 8:42 pm Looks great! I had another thought - CS Ice Snow might not be white enough in your design. I've been looking at A LOT of stone sample lately and Ice Snow is definitely just off-white to me. CS Nougat, Snow, and Pure WHite are substantially whiter, and there's a bunch of whiter ones by Quantum Quartz. Also, whilst your playing around with sketchup, you can add the image of your flooring as a texture in your model to get a better sense of how the colours work together: http://support.google.com/sketchup/bin/ ... wer=114318 Re: Kitchen Colour advice 7Jan 12, 2012 8:02 am I think a smoky colour mirror splashback would be perfect with the white & dark colours you already have and as MrZebra said you can add whatever colour takes your fancy with bits and pieces. For info on our build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=43093 Built the McLaren by Dechellis - slab down 22 Feb - handover 30 Aug 2011 - and gardens finished 9 Dec 2012!! Re: Kitchen Colour advice 8Jan 12, 2012 8:16 am Thanks MrZebra, I had thought that ice snow may not be the right colour exactly but thought I would look at the specific benchtop colour after the other choices are made... thanks. Thanks Mclaren, yeah, I do agree that the smokey mirror would suit the colours I already have but just 2 things I didn't previously mention is that there is no windows in the kitchen area - it is part of an open plan living/dining that has plenty of light but it is still a 'windowless' kitchen and also we had thought about perhaps putting the black on the island bench doors that face the living room....... that is just another thought!!! Maybe not!!!! Re: Kitchen Colour advice 9Jan 12, 2012 9:14 am Great job Rocketship. I love your kitchen design. It is very similar to what we are having in our owner build! The black and white colour scheme is also the same. Are you having black gloss and white gloss on the cabinets?? I have been tossing up between gloss on gloss or a textured black vinyl wrap against a white gloss??? BLOG: thehousewebuilt2010.blogspot.com (And are still building!) Re: Kitchen Colour advice 10Jan 12, 2012 9:16 am Also I forgot to add that IMO the black spash back looks good but doesn't make your black cabinetry stand out as a feature. I like the white, mirror or maybe even more of a silver or lighter grey colour??? BLOG: thehousewebuilt2010.blogspot.com (And are still building!) Re: Kitchen Colour advice 11Jan 12, 2012 3:30 pm Thanks DanniB, sorry, I just realised I had a reply! I just took a look at your blog and I remember looking at your massive retaining wall a little while back... your house is looking great. Do you have a floor plan somewhere? When do you hope to be in? I'm not sure at this stage about exact materials but I am meeting with the cabinet maker in a few weeks to work out the specifics. You might be right, I think, about the black and the black cabinetry. One of the photos I found inspiration from originally had a mirror splashback but I don't want to do mirror for the upright on the island...... so then what do I do...... my husband now thinks we should do the mirror and put the green on the upright but I think that will just make the upright stand out too much.... but I do really love the green....... oh the decisions...... Re: Kitchen Colour advice 12Jan 12, 2012 3:40 pm Maybe mirrored splash back with black on the upright, to tie into the black cabinetry???? Sorry I don't have a copy of the floor plan on the computer, just the old-fashioned hard copies! We are hoping to be in as soon as possible...but we are probably about 5-6 months away. The place is at lock up and we are waiting to get the walls and ceilings gyprocked. It is really testing my patience...i like things done quickly. I have started a sketch up using google sketch. I'm learning how to use, so it's real really rough. Have a look on my blog. BLOG: thehousewebuilt2010.blogspot.com (And are still building!) Re: Kitchen Colour advice 14Jan 12, 2012 4:21 pm I couldn't work out how too put my sketchup pics on here either so the round a bout way I did it was to do a printscreen (control - prt sc) then pasted that into a powerpoint to crop it and then saved it as a jpeg and saved it in photobucket..... it worked (and I wanted to get all 3 drawings on the one page) but it is a crazy way to do it.... there has to be an easier way!!! Sorry - I'll try and post a pic later of the kitchen that I love which inspired me but now it is time to feed the kids and big kids too!! Re: Kitchen Colour advice 15Jan 12, 2012 5:02 pm Not being able to upload attachments on this forum is a pain!! Anyway, you can ease some of the pain by exporting your work in sketchup as a jpg: File>Export>2D Graphic. Then you can upload it to photobucket. Re: Kitchen Colour advice 16Jan 12, 2012 9:23 pm Thanks MrZebra, I knew there had to be an easy way to do it!!! Here is the kitchen that I feel in love with orignally (It is a photo taken with my phone of a magazine so not overly clear - sorry). The magazine said this kitchen was built by Urban Kitchens, Melbourne if anyone is interested. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I have just been looking through my 'house scrapbook' and nearly all the kitchens that I have cut out of magazines have mirror splashbacks.... so I am definately now thinking that is the best way to go.... until someone convinces me otherwise... and to be honest, I'm usually easily swayed This is a picture of the kitchen I designed in 2004 for the last house we built. It shows the idea of the upright in the island that hides the sink. Excuse the mess , it's the only photo I can find and was taken the morning after we moved in!!! http://i1093.photobucket.com/albums/i439/rocketship2009/P1010107.jpg Suggestions are still more than welcome... thanks Re: Kitchen Colour advice 17Jan 12, 2012 10:25 pm Hi rocketship With MrZebra;s advice I managed to update the blog with my kitchen sketch up. SOrry I still can't seem to post photos directly onto the forum or else I would have done that. I really love the kitchen you have drawn your inspiration from. I think we have similar taste! Do you know if that kitchen used a black in there kitchen or was it something else? I'm worried about using black and white....thinking it might be too much? Not sure if I should be trying to find a more charcoal black or grey?? Now back to your kitchen: I think the mirror will look great. And you should go with your first instinct. I get caught out with that! BLOG: thehousewebuilt2010.blogspot.com (And are still building!) Re: Kitchen Colour advice 18Jan 12, 2012 10:48 pm I really like the idea of the black and white - I think if you went with grey/slate and white it would just look like you were aiming for black and white and missed the mark. Secondly, I think the mirrored splashback really works with this modern, monochromatic design. It brings light into the space, the colour of the mirror is silver (which is a natural extension of black and white) and it will reflect the colours/decor of the adjoining spaces without it being dominant. Thirdly - personally, I'm not a fan of the raised section of the island bench as I think it breaks up the space and is not that practical/functional (I'm very keen on kitchens being functional spaces). Rocketship, you're also having a beautiful, modern (and expensive) sink - why would you want to hide it? Yes, you'll have to keep everything neat and clean, but isn't that the point of minimalist, modern design, anyway? I would much prefer that the benchtop on the island be super chunky (100 mm stone) as in the scanned magazine you posted, to give the impact that you're after. Oooh that was all really honest - sorry, I've had a couple of glasses of pinot! Re: Kitchen Colour advice 19Jan 13, 2012 7:02 am DanniB - I had a look at your blog - great work on sketch up and our kitchens are VERY similar. Funnily the back wall is the same length, I think yours says 6800mm & that's exactly what mine is. The difference being that my fridge and pantry are on the wall to the right hand side (not drawn in sketch up). I will PM you with all the details of the kitchen in the mag. MrZebra - please do not say sorry for being honest. That is the thing I love about this forum. Family and friends tell you what you want to hear (and don't generally care that much anyway) but on here people actually can give an honest opinion!!! I agree about black and white (don't go charcoal), I think if you start to move away from black then you need to go into the brown/black range of colours instead... which I also like but really want black and white this time. I agree with the mirror splashback reflecting light and colours and we also have a nice view out of the sliding doors that it may reflect from some angles!! I love the raised part - as you can see I have had it before and loved it.... I feel like it is a reflection of the L shape created by the black overhead and side cabinets... but more importantly it is practical/functional (I wouldn't have it if it wasn't) - it does serve to hide dishes (& even though the idea of minimalist modern is neat and clean with a young family that is not always possible every minute of every day!!), It serves as a spot to put a powerpoint on the island, it is a nice place to display a vase with flowers or a christmas decoration, etc. if need be. It also creates a splashback for the sink. I understand it is not everyones taste, most people after the modern look would probably prefer not to put the sink on the island at all for a clean look.... the island bench is 4m.... there is still PLENTY of clear, clean bench. This is the third kitchen I have designed and even though I have been a bit stuck on colours I am pretty definate about the layout... it has been planned for a long time but again... I still really appreciate the feedback... I love homeone!! It's sad, I know. Re: Kitchen Colour advice 20Jan 13, 2012 8:58 am Hi there Rocketship, Thought I would share some photos of our kitchen.. we just built our home and have recently moved (excuse the mess!) With our splashback, we have mirror across one side and then around the window we have contrasting tiles, which I think works quite well as the mirror is just going to reflect everything anyway We chose to have a mirror as our kitchen is small and it helps it look bigger Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Versaloc is a mortarless besser block system that still needs a properly engineered footing.
