Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Jan 10, 2012 11:29 pm Hi everyone, I'm finalising my kitchen reno design and I'm having some doubts around the best distance between the fridge and the end of the peninsula bench in my 'G' shaped kitchen: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ You can see in the image that the gap I'm talking about is the entryway into the kitchen itself, and in the design shown there is 1250 mm between the waterfall end of the bench and cabinetry to the left. However, when you take into account the fridge sitting proud of the cabinetry, the gap is reduced to 1100 mm. This is more than enough room for someone to work at the bench and have another person pass behind them, however, when the fridge door is open, there is only just enough room for a person to pass by sideways. Do you think I should make the gap larger?? I should mention that the old design (which I lived with for 3 years) had a gap of only 750 mm, so the 1100 mm seems pretty expansive to me! Thanks for your input! Re: How much space between fridge and bench? 2Jan 12, 2012 7:37 pm 1100 should be fine, you wont have the fridge door open all the time, and when you do, its only for a minute or two. my kitchen has 770mm gap with a 400mm gap when the fridge door is open, and it hasnt been a problem. G Re: How much space between fridge and bench? 3Jan 12, 2012 8:10 pm Thanks Pitto, that makes me feel reassured. I guess if I get a side by side fridge in the future it will be much less of an issue. The fridge I have currently is single door and the biggest size I could get, which means the door swings out a long way! Re: How much space between fridge and bench? 4Jan 12, 2012 9:42 pm I just checked mine. I have 1.77m, havent built it yet, so cant comment. I'm actually wondering if that will be too much, its more than a step from fridge to bench My current home is 1.1m no problems whatsoever. Re: How much space between fridge and bench? 5Jan 12, 2012 10:24 pm Gogo, thanks for your input. I kind of rigged up a bit of a mock scenario with dining room chairs acting as the fridge and benchtop. At 1.1m I reckon I'd either need a very wide wingspan, or I'd need to take a small step to exchange items from the benchtop/fridge. Any more and it would be 2+ steps, which is really pushing the practicality/convenience factor. As it is, my current design only just satisfies the kitchen 'work triangle' rules (total of all three legs between fridge/sink/cooktop should be no more than 7.9m according to http://ergonomics.about.com/od/kitchen/ ... iangle.htm), so perhaps 1.77m might be a little too much?? 2 7524 Joe Apologies for the delay in getting back to you.
