It opens back inline with the wall then the pantry begins. I didn't realise it could pivot out until one day I got stuck in there as I closed the door, when I complained to the builder they told me . Did I feel like a fool, yes! Most of the time it is open ( pushed in ) as I'm for ever in and out of the pantry. I agree with you a door or doors opened out would drive me crazy. I have attached a pic, the large panel that you see beside the coffee machine and nearest to the stairs is the pantry door.
