Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Dec 27, 2011 5:44 pm Hi all, Just went through my house plans with my mum and she asked me where I was going to put my microwave..... Does anyone have any ideas on where I can put a microwave in what Mum calls my "badly designed kitchen"? Hopefully the image works..... If you put it in the position next to the drawers, you could put a nice drawer underneath.... Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Not sure which is best??? If you are not happy with the current design, are you in a position to change it? Re: Kitchen in new house - Ideas for microwave space?? 3Dec 27, 2011 7:17 pm we have a very large WIP and our microwave is in there, it was our plan and made sure we put powerpoints for it. Re: Kitchen in new house - Ideas for microwave space?? 4Dec 27, 2011 7:21 pm how often do you use it? if not much (or just for heating peas) stick it in the pantry, just make sure there is a power point in there. otherwise do a wall microwave cabinet left of the window, ??? maybe? might be hard to get things in and out though! like this (this was off photobucket) Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Kitchen in new house - Ideas for microwave space?? 5Dec 27, 2011 8:00 pm Wow! Thank you Kiwi and Rocketship. I like the idea of the wall-mounted cabinet to the left of the window. It may be awkward getting food in and out of there, but I rarely use my microwave (mostly to re-heat leftovers..... Which isn't all that often). I also like the pantry idea and may even go with that option. Would never have thought of that! Thank you both! They're great ideas Re: Kitchen in new house - Ideas for microwave space?? 6Dec 30, 2011 3:18 pm Agree with putting the microwave in the pantry if you don't use it frequently. Have you thought of splitting your pantry door so you have two narrow doors that open from the middle so you don't have the open pantry door completely obscuring the sink? Variegated Re: Kitchen in new house - Ideas for microwave space?? 7Dec 30, 2011 5:03 pm I do like the idea of the MW going in the pantry - especially if it's not used frequently, just be aware that some MWs can vent quite a bit of steam. Alternatively, it could go under the bench as is common for a lot of island benches (and as indicated by rocketship), but of course, you will lose out on draw/cupboard space. Can I ask - is your cooktop sandwiched between the fridge and pantry? It looks like you're having a 900mm cooktop in a 1200mm space. For me this would be the most problematic aspect of your design - you really ought to have an absolute minimum of 300mm of bench space either side of the cooktop so you can place down ingredients whilst cooking. Re: Kitchen in new house - Ideas for microwave space?? 9May 14, 2012 9:04 pm I love cooking and hate microwaves! Ours is going in the laundry! haha We use the microwave once a week if we are lucky. No way I am going to comprimise my kitchen design for it. Our house (renting) we have our microwave next to where your sink is and it is painful, you have to reach over to use it (I normally spill something) and the worst part is you can see the side/ back when you walk past and it just looks un tidy. When we did our kitchen I made sure we had a spot for it. One of many points that made it a "badly designed kitchen". As it's my 1st build, I can only go up from here! I ended up going with the microwave in the pantry option. I don't like using a microwave for any sort of cooking, and will only use it for reheating. I don't even like using it to defrost things! I did live without a microwave for 6 months or so at one point and really didn't miss it at all. Found I preferred reheating pizza in the oven and it's possible to reheat most other things on the stove! Which brings me to the "no bench space by the cooktop" issue. I'm going to get on of those island trolleys and wheel that in when I'm cooking. It was the best I could come up with. Another problem is that I decided I wouldn't "need" an ice-maker/water dispenser in my fridge. So didn't get the plumbing for the fridge space. Now I'm regretting it, even though my current fridge doesn't have that feature. Most new ones do, and I'd like to be able to use them if I got a new fridge. Oh well, you live and learn. Oh, my house isn't finished yet, but i hope my kitchen makes me at least a little happy.... BENCH TOPS!
