Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Dec 13, 2011 7:36 pm Our kitchen went in today as pictured and we had ordered the 40mm C/S White Shimmer benchtop with waterfall. Now we have a problem that the height is going to be too high (our fault) - 930mm from floor so we are thinking of having 20mm benchtop with a 40mm waterfall edge butt jointed. Has anyone seen this done and do you think it would be ok? http://i1031.photobucket.com/albums/y380/bendezo/House/photo.jpg Re: 20mm benchtop with 40mm waterfall..anyone seen this done 3Dec 13, 2011 7:42 pm My bench is 960 from floor, that includes 30mm CS. It seemed really high for the first few days because the bench at the rental was super low and only 450 wide. Now I wouldn't have the bench lower than 960 it's great!! Re: 20mm benchtop with 40mm waterfall..anyone seen this done 4Dec 13, 2011 7:45 pm BTW, another alternative is 30 mm for both top and sides. That is what I used - no chance of join lines between slab! It looks great - not too thick, not too thin. We put some boards on there this arvo to measure at 930mm and because Im short they felt too high, ok for my husband though. 960 - wow that high, i really wouldnt be able to see over it. Considered the 30mm but I thought it was heaps more expensive. Stone mason is waiting for an answer. Im dont mind the 20mm top but unsure about the 20mm waterfall. Do you think 2 diff sizes will look silly? Re: 20mm benchtop with 40mm waterfall..anyone seen this done 6Dec 13, 2011 8:04 pm Bit hard to see in the photo, but can you change the window to where it should be? Might be a whole lot cheaper. I've got a bench window and the builder fitted it way too high, it would have been covered by the overhead cupboards!!! Had to be moved!! Re: 20mm benchtop with 40mm waterfall..anyone seen this done 7Dec 13, 2011 8:12 pm We should have moved the window before we altered the kitchen to suit. Now it doesnt make a diff cos the kitchen height will stay the same..ahhh. After lots of planning and mistakes still happen! Re: 20mm benchtop with 40mm waterfall..anyone seen this done 8Dec 13, 2011 8:24 pm Thought that may have been the case but decided to ask, jic!! Don't worry about mistakes even 'qualified' builders make mistakes. Can't think of anywhere I've seen 20mm and 40mm CS used together, could you phone CS and ask if they have photos? Re: 20mm benchtop with 40mm waterfall..anyone seen this done 9Dec 13, 2011 8:35 pm I think that the two different thicknesses will look odd. 30mm Caesar is a significant jump in price (from memory about $200 - $300 per slab) but would be better than two thicknesses. Re: 20mm benchtop with 40mm waterfall..anyone seen this done 10Dec 13, 2011 8:58 pm Will get a quote tomorrow morning and see how much they charge me extra, will be interesting to see. Still thinking that 920 is still a bit high for me. Anyone else find this height ok? 20mm benchtop with 40mm waterfall..anyone seen this done? 12Dec 13, 2011 9:13 pm We have 20mm Caesarstone with waterfall edge on our island bench. Looks good. Very happy with the result. Maybe just 20mm could be the option. As others have said there are higher kitchens going in. How tall are you?? I personally dont like the look of 20mm in a kitchen and think that mixing 20mm with 40mm waterfalls would look terriable. I think the one width is the way to go. More aesthetically pleasing Re: 20mm benchtop with 40mm waterfall..anyone seen this done 16Dec 14, 2011 11:52 am I would certainly go for the one thickness. But 20 mm misses out on the wow factor. To me, it's either 30 mm or 40 mm for both top and side. Looks good IMHO! Re: 20mm benchtop with 40mm waterfall..anyone seen this done 18Dec 14, 2011 6:56 pm Our kitchen bench height is 960mm, when the flooring goes in it will be ~942mm. My fiancée is 159cm or 5ft 3in and while initially it took a bit of getting used too she now prefers this bench height. Can you set up a temporary bench/table to simulate the bench height and see how you find working at that height? Re: 20mm benchtop with 40mm waterfall..anyone seen this done 19Dec 14, 2011 8:34 pm I personally don't like mixing edge thicknesses. Some people go for 60mm mitred island bench and 40mm elsewhere and tbh ruins the appeal imho. Re: 20mm benchtop with 40mm waterfall..anyone seen this done 20Dec 14, 2011 8:36 pm splitting hairs a bit with the bench height....you will get used to whatever you settle on, but for us higher is better. Funnily enough we were commited by a window height as well, not a mistake but a screwup by our builder that we wore. Ours will be at 920.. we wanted 950 but wont quibble over the 30mm. oh and we have White Shimmer stone as well..... installed TODAY and its looks awesome....good choice I work with owner, he/she is my man on the ground and I instruct them when to visit the site and take photos and I have other tools in the bag. 4 15284 I am in the same situation, would you be able to give some insights in to this? I am in SA 8 17061 Depends what you're current inclusions are, but we're not including wardrobes and will just use second hand ones until we can save later on to get them built. Also have a… 3 11647 |
