Browse Forums Kitchen Corner Re: Oh please help me....!!! 2Dec 13, 2011 4:28 am Everyone will tell you that "vinyl has come a long way recently" and "those problems were a bad batch of glue"... The truth is that vinyl wrap (thermolaminate) is still vinyl wrap and is still manufactured and applied the same way as it has ever been. By definition this means that it is still susceptible to high temperatures and humidity. Put a kettle or toaster underneath your wall units and they WILL run a risk of delaminating. If a lot of heat escapes your oven when the doors open and the vinyl WILL run a risk of discolouring and bubbling. It HAS to, it is still just a very very thin layer of VINYL vacuum formed and glued to an MDF board. Two pack is still brittle and can still chip but it can also still be easily repaired or colour matched should a door or board need some attention. The new range of high gloss laminates are making big inroads in the market and are taking a share of the two pack market but they are still only restricted to flat surfaces and still have joins visible at the edges. Best value for money is in melamine/laminate. If you want a bit more of a finished look and rounded or bevelled edges and I would recommend two pack over vinyl any day. Polyurethane(2pac) everytime! Its the only product that can be repaired. Out of interest, what sort of cost is associated with repairing a chipped 2-pac door? Re: Oh please help me....!!! 5Dec 13, 2011 10:01 am We have used 2-pac in the kitchen for cupboard and drawers, however vinyl in butlers pantry and laundry. All gloss white. Kitchen links to laundry via butlers pantry so we wanted a consistent look. We did kitchen in 2-pac for durability, but vinyl in butlers and laundry to reduce cost - and these areas aren't subject to heat/steam as you'd get in the kitchen. With white cupboards you really can't tell the difference between the two unless you're close. 2-pac has almost unlimited colour choise, but vinyl has less options. Fortunately we wanted white so it wasn't hard choice regarding colour! MW tower and other tall cupboard doors are a darker laminate for contrast. From memory, 2-pac was aorund $250 per door and vinyl almost half that. It might be what your builder/cabinet maker told you but it might also be true they were trying to run out old stock! Vinyl wrap is about 15-20% cheaper than polyurethane doors, so not alot. Can anyone tell me what the price of laminate gloss is vs 2Pac?? Thanks again Re: Oh please help me....!!! 10Dec 14, 2011 6:33 am optimistic12 Can anyone tell me what the price of laminate gloss is vs 2Pac?? Thanks again I depends on the brand of the laminate gloss product. Some of them can be just as expensive as 2pac. I am happy with my choices Re: Oh please help me....!!! 12Dec 14, 2011 7:42 am So, how easy is it exactly to chip 2pac? Does it tend to chip on the edges only? Is it as simple as knocking the surface with a plate? My Dad worked a lot with 2pac many years ago (he's a painter) and he is very biased against 2pac as a finish because of the chipping issue. Re: Oh please help me....!!! 13Dec 14, 2011 11:48 am I have had polyurethane in all of my kitchens( i have two kids) and can count the number of chips on one hand with two fingers missing!!! A plate will chip the edge of a door if given a good bang but it wouldnt chip the face. Its really a non issue, I dont understand why people are so worried about it. You dont see laminate or vinyl in high end kitchens you only see polyurethane and you dont see those owners complaining about it. Not a great idea for fingerpulls. Earls comments are on the money 100% as is CEK's in regards to chipping. G Thankyou so much 😀 I've decided on White on white for doors and trims, White on white 50% on ceiling and Mt buller for walls. Fingers crossed it will look OK 😀 2 7158 i had the my concreters concrete right up to the fence. I have pits all along my path, so the water tends to drain away from the house and into the pits.
