Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Dec 12, 2011 7:19 am Hi, for those who have water lines to their fridge, does your water connection/tap stick out into the cavity space? Is this a problem, as far as pushing the fridge further out into the room? I have read on this forum that some are recessing their fridge power point, but I am wondering if it is possible to also recess the fridge tap? My though is to recess both power point and tap, and perhaps put in some sort of air vent as well, since the wall behind the fridge cavity only goes to a walk in linen cupboard. The fridge cavity will be fairly snug, and I am trying to optimise the space. Does anyone have something similar? Or see any problems with doing this? Thanks. Re: Fridge tap - recessed? 2Dec 12, 2011 8:05 am unless I'm mistaken, the power point for the fridge is generally higher than the fridge. So it's kinda pointless to recess the GPO so it can sit within the cavity. Similar for water. Also check you fridge manual - the fridge has to sit away from the wall- usually 25mm. If you want the fridge to fit hard against the wall, the coils may be touching the rear wall - not sure this would be a good idea even with air vents in the wall Re: Fridge tap - recessed? 3Dec 12, 2011 8:42 am My fridge power point and tap are above the fridge. So, no need to recess. I also made sure the water filter and cutoff were accessible from the cupboard above the fridge. That is, no need to move the fridge out to change the water filter. I also have vents at the base and above the fridge. The vent at the base is easy since the fridge is on an outside wall (one of the design requirements) and the vent above goes to two 150 mm pipes that are above the roof. So overall good rear ventilation for maximum effeciency. Great idea about the filter and cutoff accessible from overhead cupboard! Might borrow that idea! I also like the idea of the tap being behind the overhead cupboard. And keeping water and GPO on opposite sides! Very sensible! So many little things to think of, otherwise the builder will just slap them wherever! Same with outside taps! Grrrr! Re: Fridge tap - recessed? 6Dec 12, 2011 11:02 am No ours is not directly behind the fridge but instead behind one of the drawers (one drawer for this is slightly shorter in length to allow the room for the tap). There is an Australian Standard determining the minimum space between a water outlet and a GPO - the builder wont just slap them together or he'll be in breach ( as would the plumber and sparkie) Re: Fridge tap - recessed? 8Dec 12, 2011 11:13 am amgsl...I know there is an Aus Standard but here they were going to put them together 'because it wasn't a water outlet, it was a capped pipe' Splitting straws I know but that's what they said. The problem is that sparky's sign off on their own work these days so they aren't going to 'fail' their work. Even if they are spaced apart if the water pipe bursts it will splash onto your fridge GPO which is usually not under control of an earth leakage circuit protector. I wouldnt sweat about the spacing too much. Re: Fridge tap - recessed? 10Dec 12, 2011 2:09 pm We had the water point specified to be 2000mm high behind fridge recess so it would not be in the way. The power point is also about 2000mm high but about 200mm from the water point. I was wondering why they don't fit a tap for connecting the pipe to the fridge, because that's the first thing I'll need to do. But maybe because it's 'capped' it's not really a water outlet so they can get away with it being so close to the power point? Fridge tap - recessed? 12Dec 12, 2011 4:04 pm Hi I got my water point installed into the cupboard next to the fridge so the water line simply runs through a hole in the side of the cupboard. This means you can easily turn off the water if something goes wrong. I thought that this was the standard placement, but obviously not. Paul Re: Fridge tap - recessed? 13Dec 12, 2011 6:51 pm we are going to install the fridge tap in the cupboard next to the fridge too. the power point will go above the fridge, as we will have some overhead cupboards there. One question, slightly off topic. A lot of display homes have a white round plastic cap/thing on the wall in the fridge cavity. is this water, or something else? dumb question, but me and my partner cant work it out last question, will we need a water point for a inbuilt coffee machine? i don't know a thing about them but one builder we may choose has them as an inclusion. ___________ Started design Aug 2011 Plans submitted to council Dec 2011 Re: Fridge tap - recessed? 14Dec 12, 2011 9:02 pm bigboyberger we are going to install the fridge tap in the cupboard next to the fridge too. the power point will go above the fridge, as we will have some overhead cupboards there. I will be having the coffee machine near the fridge anyway, so wont be too hard to double up. Nope, not ducted vaccum, i'll get a picture and upload and stop hijacking threads. ___________ Started design Aug 2011 Plans submitted to council Dec 2011 Hi Stuey, think you’ve got a couple of options here you’d just need to decide your preference/which options suits best.
