Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Nov 28, 2011 12:14 pm Hi everyone, Just thought I'd raise a new topic (unless of course it's been covered here before). I'm designing my kitchen and choosing which size fridge cabinet to have. The standard size is 900 mm wide, however, I've done a bit of research into fridge sizes and I've decided to stray from the standard. As it turns out 900 mm is wider than necessary for all upright fridge/freezer models that I've checked (by ~ 50 mm) and is too narrow for almost all side-by-side models (for which a 1000 mm wide cabinet would be required). So what's up with 900 mm being the standard width? I personally have a 510 liter Westinghouse upright with bottom freezer that is 803 mm wide. As I don't foresee buying a side-by-side fridge in the future (I live with my partner and we have no kids, so a side-by-side would be too HUGE for us) I'm leaning towards an 850 mm cabinet so I can utilise that additional 50 mm elsewhere. The other alternative I see is to opt for a 1000 mm cabinet which will dwarf my current fridge but will provide flexibility for future owners of the house. What does everyone think? Love to hear your thoughts - am I doing future owners of the house a disservice? - Zebs. Re: Fridge Cabinet conundrum - interested in your thoughts. 3Nov 28, 2011 4:33 pm 900mm cabinets are only standard for companys that use flatpack or mass produced cabinets! I personally wouldnt use a company that limits you to these sizes as it will cause other problems in the kitchen aswell. We have to standard size cabinets and build fridge cabinets to suit the fridge. So for 803mm wide fridge I would build an 850mm cabinet. My fridge manufacturer 'recommends' a 30 mm space either side of the fridge for ventilation. An 850 mm cabinet will give me 23.5mm either side - which I feel confident will be more than sufficient given that there will be only a shallow cabinet above the fridge allowing plenty of space for vertical venting in the rear. I have to say, I just hate the look of those large gaps either side of the fridge in an inappropriately wide cabinet. I'm actually having a 400 mm tall cupboard either side of the fridge in an effort to make it look 'built in' - so the smaller the gaps, the happier I will be! That way I can have better space around for ventilation, and also space for future expansion. But I'm wondering if it would look wierd. Re: Fridge Cabinet conundrum - interested in your thoughts. 8Nov 28, 2011 8:27 pm PHL, I think I'm just going to go with the 850mm cabinet space for mine, and if in the future I want to upgrade to a side-by-side I can do a relatively inexpensive rejig of my cabinetry ie. replace my above-fridge cabinet with a wider one. I'm intrigued by your idea though...let me know how you progress. Re: Fridge Cabinet conundrum - interested in your thoughts. 10Dec 04, 2011 9:22 pm I would consider your future wants. My parents had their pigeon pair built in and when it packed it in they had trouble finding one to fit so they altered the cabinets and now you can tell it has been changed and doesn't look that great.
