Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Nov 15, 2011 7:49 pm Hi all Planning our next house build and looking for feedback from others who have built their kitchen with a window situated above the benchtop, with overheads cupboards above the window. What height window do you have? We are currently looking at a height of 600mm, but are unsure if this will be too large. Ideally the benches will be 1000mm high, then 600mm of window, then the overheads to near the ceiling. Is 600mm to big for a window? Also the window will be 2700mm long! Any pictures/images/comments that anyone has would be appreciated. Success is the result of good judgment, good judgment is the result of experience, and experience is often the result of bad judgment! Havent built it yet, so cant show you, but I didnt want any splashback around it, jsut window, I believe a normal splashbackk is 600, so figure it just replaces it. Not sure why the height of the ceilings would make a difference though We have 3.3m or 11 ft, but we also have a dropped ceiling over the kitchen. Re: Kitchen window, with cupboards above-how big? 5Nov 16, 2011 12:31 am Do you have a canopy rangehood somewhere in your kitchen? If you do, most people will line up the bottom of their overhead cupboards with the base of the rangehood (gives a cleaner line and splashback then goes up to entire underside of the overheads and rangehood), and most rangehood manufacturers recommend 700-750mm above benchtop. But if you don't have a rangehood to line it up with, I think a 600mm high window with overhead cupboards above it is fine, 600mm is definitely not too big as I'm used to seeing kitchen windows 700-750mm high with overheads above as that's pretty much the "standard" splashback height in WA. The main thing is to get the balance right - your window height will decide what height your overheads start at, and you don't want the overheads up too high or they become too hard to use, but you also want to make sure the overhead cupboards are not taller than the bottom cupboards (a big no-no in interior design as the kitchen will become top heavy). You mention you will be taking the overhead cupboards up to near the ceiling - have you considered taking them the whole way up? It's so much easier, none of that horrible greasy dust that accumulates on top of kitchen cupboards. If your ceilings are too high to do that, as gogo mentioned you can add either a dropped ceiling or dropped bulkhead. Re: Kitchen window, with cupboards above-how big? 6Nov 16, 2011 8:49 pm Thanks for that. have seen now that the size isn't so "large" having seen a couple of other posts. Haven't finished designing the kitchen fully as yet so options open as to height. Just had to plan the window height and size for plans etc. Thanks for the help Settlement 1/2/12 New Shed 23/3/12 Slab poured 27/3/12 Frame complete 4/5/12 Roof complete 1/6/12 LOCKUP 29/6/12 Our new build blog http://kareenhillsownerbuild.blogspot.com/ You can really use anything you want the main consideration would be how it looks once painted/finished - or the look you want.
