Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Oct 02, 2011 9:37 pm Hi All, As the title suggests, where do you normally mount a GPO on a kitchen island. I am a little confused as I intend to have waterfall edges. If normal edges the sides would make sense. Is it a case of recessing them in the waterfall edge on the side least obvious. I looked through the "Show Me Your Kitchen" thread but could not really find the answer. Thanks in advance..... Ciao Mark Re: Confused - Where to put the GPO in Kitchen Island 2Oct 02, 2011 11:44 pm It depends firstly on what your island consists of -- draws or cupboards. You can't have them on a side that has draws. We couldn't have a powerpoint anywhere on our island bench because it's all draws. We could have put it on the back facing the family room, but that would mean making a draw shorter, so it didn't run up to it. The island is 1,200 deep with shallow cupboards on the Brekky Bench side. I think I may put a GPO in the cupboard as it will probably not be used everyday. I will mean I have to open the cupboard to use it though. I cannot think how else as the island consists of drawers, dishwasher and sinks. I am not so sure I would want a GPO under the sink. Anyway lets see what those better and more experienced than I can suggest. Cheers Mark Re: Confused - Where to put the GPO in Kitchen Island 4Oct 03, 2011 8:06 am Not sure about the location, but ...... .... a friend of mine who happens to be an electrician as well has just finished building a magnificent home and in the kitchen is one of the neatest little gadgets I have seen. It's a little gizmo with about 3 or 4 power points (?) on a vertical stand. The whole thing recesses into his kitchen bench top !!! It sits flush with the bench top when not in use and has a round surface of brushed stainless steel about the size of a jam jar lid. You push on it and it pops up from beneath the bench top, and stays up revealing the power points. When you are finished you push it down again. It's meant to be completely waterproof when down so that you can wipe over the bench without fear of water getting down to the power point. It's about one of the coolest little gadgets I have seen in a kitchen for a long time. I would post pics, but I am lucky to see this bloke once a year as he works away in the mines. I am sure a bit of asking around or web searching would find one. Confused - Where to put the GPO in Kitchen Island 5Oct 03, 2011 8:08 am Mark - my island is 1200mm wide. One side is the shallow 300mm cupboards with a 300mm overhang and the other side normal 600mm drawers. We have a double power point on the "dead" end of the bench sitting on the waterfall. Not sure if it is because my edges are 80mm thick but my designer, stonemason and eleco all had no issue installing it. And the cupboard is free and clear to use - perfect for vases. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Confused - Where to put the GPO in Kitchen Island 7Oct 03, 2011 8:14 am My island bench 2 sets of 3 drawers and I have a double power point on my right hand side towards the back, just under the laminex top. Power point in the pantry. Also 2 under the overhead cupboards. Re: Confused - Where to put the GPO in Kitchen Island 8Oct 03, 2011 8:30 am I've got a Power Tower in the Caesarstone bench and it's fantastic. It's similar to the one Eyspy mentioned but different manufacturer has a ring pull on top rather than a touch feature. It's the perfect answer for power in island benches but unfortunately has been discontinued so you might have to hunt around to find one. A couple of stonemason's baulked at cutting a hole but the stonie I used didn't hesitate...and didn't charge extra either!! One bloke was going to charge $240 just to cut the hole!!!!! The power tower is a totally DIY item (after the hole has been cut) and comes with a 1 metre flex and then plugs into the dishwasher power point in the cupboard underneath. This could be used behind a drawer providing (of course) the drawer was a little shorter, without looking I'd guess approx 100mm. There is space for several power outlets and several data points, they can be rearranged to suit your needs. Hope this helps? Re: Confused - Where to put the GPO in Kitchen Island 9Oct 03, 2011 9:58 am Thanks to all who replied, definitely food for thought and better solutions that inside a cupboard. Kyton is your point recessed in the stone or mounted onto of the stone surface much the same profile as if it had been on a wall. My issue is that the sink end is also the "dead" end (I assume that is the least seen end). Anyway some more to think about...... Cheers Mark Re: Confused - Where to put the GPO in Kitchen Island 11Oct 05, 2011 8:36 pm Check mine out on pg 84 of show me your kitchen thread. I have water fall edges and had the GPO fitted into the cabinetry on the top right hand side. My thread has the plan....I think... Just another option. Re: Confused - Where to put the GPO in Kitchen Island 12Oct 14, 2011 7:28 pm I had 2XGPO planned on the more obscure side of the island bench. I hope they flush them. Re: Confused - Where to put the GPO in Kitchen Island 13Oct 14, 2011 11:55 pm I was thinking the same thing but with a waterfall edge they would need to be countersunk and if there were drawers there would need to be allowance so not to run into the runners etc. I do like the idea of the pop up one shown above just wondering whether a silver or stainless disc would stick out like the proverbial..... more to think about...... Confused - Where to put the GPO in Kitchen Island 14Oct 15, 2011 6:59 am Mine isn't countersunk. My eleco chose a Clipsal slimline GPO and it wouldn't be more then 1cm thick. But mine is on the dead side of the bench which no-one sees unless they walk down and around the bench. Aussie Mark - don't forget those pop up ones will reduce the depth of the drawer beneath it (unless you are having a cupboard underneath). An easier solution is to choose a nice glass GPO like a Saturn from Clipsal - we have them elsewhere and they are extremely thin and look good as well. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Confused - Where to put the GPO in Kitchen Island 15Oct 24, 2011 10:25 am Hi Mark, We have a Caesarstone bench with waterfall sides and have one powerpoint in each end maybe 15cm from the top and centered. At one end of the island we have our dishwasher and the other end is drawers. They are not fully flush, but we have thin plates over them and thats as far as they stick out. From memory the stonemason cut them on site when they were installing the stone. I have also seen powerpoints installed flush on the countertop but me councern with those would be water etc going down them. Otherwise if you have a breakfast bar you could maybe have them hidden just under the overhag? If this is a custom build then I would expect the builder to set out the door frame closer to the wall to avoid the gap between architrave and the wall and or specify… 9 8306 0 9810 |
