Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Oct 13, 2011 3:44 pm Hi guys! We really wanted stone benchtops in our new place but just couldnt handle another upgrade.. We have a glash splashback which will be going in as normal. However i've just heard that replacing the benchtops later will ruin the glass splashback.. Im guessing they could crack it etc when installing but how does it work with the installer if that does happen??? Im starting to worry we may not be able to replace them later as planned.. (Not that the ones we have are the end of the world).. Thanks!!! Building in Adelaide, SA Slab poured 08/09/2011 Handover 18/01/2012! That meens the splashbacks sits ontop of the benchtop so when the tops are removed the splashback is usually removed to allow the tops to come out. If you try and remove the tops without taking the splash back out you can easily damage the splashback. The person that removes the old tops will usually say all care but no responsibility. Has anyone had any experience with removing a glass splash back and putting it back? I seriously doubt anyone would when i think about it! If its on gyprock you might have some luck but I highly doubt it. It was a display kitchen for their showroom and had a glass splash back. It was pointed out by the auctioneer that the glass was not included in the sale as it was likely to break in removal, but if the buyer got it out they could have it. I never really wanted it, but my brother and I managed to get it out without breaking it, but the problem was the glue that held it in place was so strong that it pulled the coloured backing from the glass. This is the problem that you may encounter. Re: Replacing benchtop question... 7Oct 14, 2011 12:48 pm you could maybe source your own stonemason, would that be cheaper? Weigh it up, do it now with the upgrade, or do it later with the bench top price and possibly the price for a new splashback. It'd be better to do it now, so the kitchen is all level. Re: Replacing benchtop question... 8Oct 14, 2011 3:19 pm Thanks guys! I have emailedpur builder to see if they'll let us bring our own in. We can always keep the other benchtops for the shed or outdoor kitch etc.. Fingers crossed they'll let us! Building in Adelaide, SA Slab poured 08/09/2011 Handover 18/01/2012! Maybe just get a credit back for the glass splashback and do both after handover when you can afford to do both. Re: Replacing benchtop question... 10Oct 16, 2011 12:24 pm Does anyone know how much it should cost to replace laminate benchtops with caesarstone after the build? Much like the OP, it has been suggested to us that we get the stone in later instead of having it as an 'upgrade'. We were quoted $1000/lineal metre to upgrade to caesarstone, but wonder what it would be if done independently... and if there would be a big labour charge... Though, we are looking at glass splashback too so maybe it's not worth it. 5.5m Terrace House - Lightsview (Northgate SA) Moved in!! - 22 February 2013 /viewtopic.php?f=31&t=53455 Re: Replacing benchtop question... 11Oct 16, 2011 1:51 pm It depends on the size of your kitchen. How many slabs? 20mm or 40mm or more??? Panels?? STD sinks or undermount?? A STD size kitchen is usually 2 slabs, and using Caesar Stone I would estimate about $3000.00 (40mm) Re: Replacing benchtop question... 12Oct 16, 2011 2:00 pm Hi Leni, Just quoting at this stage, so I don't have the plans but from memory the kitchen island is about 3m long and the wall benchtop space would be about 1.5m at a guess. Would be open to 20mm or 40mm depending on price, and sink would be standard. Is your guess of $3k including labour? What kind of price difference is there for 20mm? Thanks for your help 5.5m Terrace House - Lightsview (Northgate SA) Moved in!! - 22 February 2013 /viewtopic.php?f=31&t=53455 Re: Replacing benchtop question... 13Oct 16, 2011 8:29 pm Sorry i dont know a lot of details.. The 3.5k included about 4m of benchtop plus 2 x 0.5m waterfall edges.. benchs may be 5m total for two.. But that doesnt include the sink or anything like that.. just the stone.. That was 20mm and included installation.. Building in Adelaide, SA Slab poured 08/09/2011 Handover 18/01/2012! WORLD CONCEPT HOMES Our build thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=44725 Re: Replacing benchtop question... 14Oct 17, 2011 9:42 am Depending on the width of your island bench will determine how many slabs. If it's 800mm you'd fit the 600mm back bench on the same slab so that would cut huge costing.. 1 slab of caesar stone, 40mm edges, cut outs and installation I think you'd be looking at about 2k. If the island bench is 900mm that makes it 2 slabs so you'd be looking at about $2,900.00 (STD range Caesar) 20mm - 800mm island bench $1750.00 and 900mm $2650.00 (estimated prices obviously) and no panels, STD cut outs, local installations... Travel time also depends on price too.. Re: Replacing benchtop question... 15Oct 17, 2011 9:34 pm After finding out today they will charge us over $1000 in fees to supply our own bench tops and will onl credit us $110!!! for the others (they won't give them to us to be able to sell or re-use).. We have decided to just leave as is.. Thanks again for everyone's help!! Building in Adelaide, SA Slab poured 08/09/2011 Handover 18/01/2012!
