Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Oct 09, 2011 7:05 am I'm in the process of renovating our kitchen and would love to know if anyone has installed stainless steel look kickboards themselves? I've only found one DIY supplier online, but I'd hate for it to turn out looking cheap so would prefer to hire a pro. I have done a google search but can't figure out who I could hire to fit such a product. Real stainless steel is a bit out of my budget, but if anyone here has gone with real ss I'd be interested to hear if they think it's worth the extra. Thank you for any advice given! Tiffany Re: DIY stainless steel look kickboards? 2Oct 09, 2011 8:09 am Not many people actually use real SS. 99% of the kickboards that look like SS are actually laminate. We use a brushed aluminium laminate that looks fantastic. If you want to retro fit that to your kitchen it is best to have it layed up on 3mm plywood so it can be easily handled, cut and fit. It was going to cost nearly $700 from Harvey Norman's. I went to a local steel supplier and got the same stuff cut for me for $55 You could do the same with your kick boards. You would first need some backing boards like MDF, or ply ?, get all your boards cut and the clips installed first, then take the boards to the local steel merchant and say you want SS cut to suit the boards. Then when you get home use industrial strength adhesive and glue the stainless to the boards. Once drive just clip into place. I did this with my stove splash back and it worked great saving heaps $$$ Re: DIY stainless steel look kickboards? 4Oct 09, 2011 6:23 pm eyspy Do what I did with my stove splash back. Some companys will use a solid kickboard so the front cant be removed and there are no clips. The SS will then have to be glued in situ, which would be a pain. Re: DIY stainless steel look kickboards? 6Oct 10, 2011 6:03 am Thanks for the replies. How can I check if my kickboards are clipped on? I had a quick look and couldn't see anywhere I could pull them off. There are tiles up against them at the moment, we will be removing them so I assume it will be more obvious once the floor is stripped? This sounds much more complicated than I first thought! Maybe I should get the stonemason to use the offcuts for the bench on the kickboard, I think he'd have plenty left over. I have read about people having this done somewhere on this forum - will look into it. Tiffany Re: DIY stainless steel look kickboards? 7Oct 23, 2011 7:53 am you can get both the brushed aluminium and brushed stainless on laminate that comes in smaller rips. your local benchtop postformer can lay it up into either ply as mentioned or 16mm HMR that can be docked and fixed in place with liquid nails over existing kicks. Its an easy job for any DIY. I prefer the brushed stainless look, its more of a darker grey over the brushed aluminium. JMO though. its a 50/50 mix these days between the two at work. makes it interesting for the apprentices.
