Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Sep 28, 2011 2:12 pm Hey everyone, My partner and I recently started looking around for flatpacked kitchens. We assessed Bunnings, Mitre 10 and Ikea. We decided to go with Mitre 10 as we thought they were a little more sturdy than the other two and we preferred their general look. We have been sent the contents and have found so far that three of the cabinets supplied contained either missing parts or incorrect parts. These cabinets are supplied by Hafele so we had to call them to request additional parts. They have reported to us that its very rare to have so many missing parts. I now have to return these cabinets to Mitre 10 and then come back to the store when the replacement parts arrive. Hafele wernt really all that helpful regarding this matter. Has anybody else had similar problems with this kitchen range or have we just been unlucky? Re: Mitre 10 Kitchen Reviews? 2Sep 28, 2011 2:27 pm I bought kitchen cupboards for the laundry from Bunnings, both floor and wall cupboards and there was nothing to fault. Wall hung vanities for both bathrooms were from there too and same again. Can't comment on Mitre 10 and Ikea because neither of those stores are in my local area. All up I was really pleased as they went together so easy but had full instruction sheets if you wanted to refer to them. Screws and other hardware was all packaged and listed so you knew what was to be used in any given place. Sorry you had problems, not really what you expect is it? Re: Mitre 10 Kitchen Reviews? 3Sep 28, 2011 3:00 pm Thanks for your comments. Sounds like I should use Bunnings when I go to do my laundry! I think I will get it sorted, but yeh you are right its a bit painful when your sitting there scratching your head wondering why its not coming together! Re: Mitre 10 Kitchen Reviews? 4Sep 28, 2011 3:19 pm Sure is! If you go ahead with the laundry, just check the depth of the cupboards as when I was buying them the laundry range were only 450mm deep and because I was having a drop in laundry tub the bench had to be 600mm deep, that's why I chose cupboards from the kitchen range. Hope you get it sorted asap. Re: Mitre 10 Kitchen Reviews? 5Sep 28, 2011 5:44 pm 450mm is quite shallow considering most people would probably want to store more bulky items in them. Thanks for you input! Whats been other peoples experiences with Mitre 10, most people I know have gone with Ikea or Bunnings. Re: Mitre 10 Kitchen Reviews? 6Sep 28, 2011 6:41 pm Have you considered using a cabinet maker to supply the cabinets?? I do alot of flat packs for customers. If you use a cabinetmaker you will get the following, Custom sized cabinets Better quality board Blum hinges Bigger choices of materials and colours. Much better quality overall. It should cost that much more either if you buy it flat pack. Much better quality overall. I think this will differ from maker to maker and I wouldn't think they would always be anywhere near the cost of the bunnings/ikea/other stuff. Also doubt that all makers will supply Blum hinges as standard. Re: Mitre 10 Kitchen Reviews? 8Sep 28, 2011 10:25 pm We never really considered going with a custom made supplied from a local cabinet maker. We did get other quotes by kitchen specialists such as Kitcraft and these turned out to be quite a bit more expensive so I guess we assumed that a custom job would be even more pricey. I don't mind paying for better quality but with the house that we are in we are wanting to sell in the short term. Are you saying that you are able to supply at close to the cost of manufacturers like Bunnings Cutting Edge Kitchens? Re: Mitre 10 Kitchen Reviews? 9Sep 28, 2011 10:45 pm A smaller cabinet maker can usually do custom cabinets for close to the same price as a flat pack. You will then get exactly what you want. I'm not knocking Kitcraft (I see they advertise here) but they aren't the cheapest place to get cabinets from. Also doubt that all makers will supply Blum hinges as standard. Of course it will differ. But the majority of cabinet makers use much better hinges and board as a standard! All the cabinet makers I know use Blum hardware as a standard!!!!! Have you actually had a quote for a flat pack from a cabinet maker?? I bet you havent. The last flat pack kitchen I supplied was only $200 more than the bunnings equivelent!!!!! What bunnings wont tell you is that there laminate tops come as blanks without joins and that you will need to pay a cabinet maker to cut the joins. This usually cost around $180 ontop of the kitchen. With a cabinet maker you can also get cabinets at any size you want. This doesnt cost any extra. With flat packs from big companys you have to work with the standard size cabinets which can be a problem. Yes. With Bunnings kitchens there are extras required (like bench top joins) that people never factor into the price. We can supply everything required. All you need is a drill, screw gun and time to put it together. I would definitely pay someone next time to install the benchtop as this was the trickiest part. Re: Mitre 10 Kitchen Reviews? 13Sep 29, 2011 8:22 am oh and another one, not sure which state you're in but Graysonline Vic have fully built kitchen with stone bench tops (2 pac paint) at their fortnightly onsite auctions. Some of the pricing seems very good but you need to measure correctly and take it home yourself. Re: Mitre 10 Kitchen Reviews? 14Sep 29, 2011 10:59 am I never actually got a quote by a flat pack cabinet maker. I guess assumed being a "custom" job it would be way more expensive. But from what you are saying they could be pretty reasonable and would be easier to install. The next project I will be doing is laundry cabinets so I will get in contact with some cabinet makers and see what they can do. I am aware of the joins needed in regards to the becnhtops. We are just going to use benchtop join strips as opposed to having to get a mitre join. If it was a house that we were going to spend years in then I would have them mitre joined. I have installed plenty of other Ikea furniture and never had a problem with it. Like I said before I have not installed the Bunnings range but have heard that its pretty reliable. At this stage I would not recommend the Mitre 10 kitchen range to other people when comparing them to Ikea and Bunnings. I checked out masters.com.au and noticed that they are supplied by Hafele, they also supply Mitre 10 and is the organisation that have supplied me the incorrect and missing parts in my order. I do know of Graysonline I think they have an affiliate over in WA but am not sure if they supply fully built kitchens. If anyone wants these in WA I know that Ross Auctions in Maylands and TS MacMahons in Wangara supply these. Re: Mitre 10 Kitchen Reviews? 15Sep 29, 2011 11:48 am CuttingEdgeKitchens Of course it will differ. But the majority of cabinet makers use much better hinges and board as a standard! All the cabinet makers I know use Blum hardware as a standard!!!!! Have you actually had a quote for a flat pack from a cabinet maker?? I bet you havent. ^^^ I'll bet everything I have then. Book it, where can I collect? The standard size bit can be an issue as you mentioned. I'm lucky enough to be handy enough to be able to cut down a bigger cabinet if required. The 2 quotes I did get for custom sized flat packs both came with stipulations for "generic" or "bulk" hinges. When I asked about getting brand name or better ones I was told by both I can have anything I like but it would cost. Obviously this varies from maker to maker. We ended up getting doors made by a cabinet maker and getting the carcasses from Bunnings. We were trying to match an existing (discontinued and 15 year old) color so this was best for us. To the OP, if you can find a maker that is within 10% of the best price you can get from a Bunnings or Ikea/other then I would go with the custom ones. You may even get the same price or cheaper but I couldn't 2 years ago. Another thing to consider s that when getting custom cabinets made you have to wait for them to be made. One thing Bunnings and the like have is they are generally on the shelf or available the next day. Re: Mitre 10 Kitchen Reviews? 17Sep 29, 2011 3:05 pm Darla, Another option you might not have considered is getting the cabinets made to order and delivered assembled for you to install yourself which more and more cabinet makers are starting to do. If you are moderately handy you would be saving yourself about $55 a cabinet for the labour without the worry of trying to put it all together. Cheers, Earl Re: Mitre 10 Kitchen Reviews? 19Sep 29, 2011 6:59 pm DarlaDark I'm going to get a small business cabinet maker to give me a quote and compare against ikea and bunnings but i think i'm going with the cabinet maker because of the custom size cabinets Spot on!!! The big companys dont want to do flat packs so they over charge for them. Find a small company and they will charge the right amount.
