Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Sep 27, 2011 3:13 pm My partner and I are renovating an old house and extending. The kitchen is staying in the same place but we have the option to keep an internal wall (it's not load bearing) or remove it to open up some space.
The kitchen is bottom middle left. This is keeping the wall exactly where it is which creates a space of 1900 x 2600mm Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ This is removing the wall which opens the space to allow for a more open plan feel. My concern with this is that it's TOO open now Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Any ideas or thoughts on layout would be really helpful. Re: Kitchen layout - help please 2Sep 27, 2011 3:26 pm I'd definately be removing it. It allows for the island bench where you could put a couple of bar stools. I think it will just look bigger and more open. The only reason I'd be keeping it is if you want to utilize that wall for the tv or a bookcase or side table or similar to sit against... but it looks like you are using the other wall for the tv. I will be interested to see what others think. Good luck. Re: Kitchen layout - help please 3Sep 27, 2011 3:38 pm I prefer the second layout. Looks good.. Awesome graphics program. Re: Kitchen layout - help please 4Sep 27, 2011 4:09 pm Thanks guys. It's a hard decision, I'm worried the space will be too open but I also don't want it to be closed off. I can also reduce the length of the wall. The program is Floorplanner, it's awesome. Re: Kitchen layout - help please 7Sep 28, 2011 7:27 am 2nd pic for me too. I doubt you would regret it. Re: Kitchen layout - help please 8Sep 28, 2011 11:07 am Love the second too.. im a huge fan of island benches!! Good luck! Building in Adelaide, SA Slab poured 08/09/2011 Handover 18/01/2012! I am not sure if you are going to have enough cabinet space. I would think about making it a U shape kitchen by extending the island unit top to the wall/sink area. The distance between the wall and the door is only 1900mm. So you would end up with 1300 between cupboards which I think is very small? I could see it working like this though: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I've done a rough kitchen design with the island bench and I think there is a fair bit of cupboard space. Thoughts? Not sure of your exact dimensions but can you increase the island to maybe - 1200mm deep. You could then have good size cupboards on the back of the island as well. Re: Kitchen layout - help please 15Sep 29, 2011 2:34 pm Yeah, I did she that on your plan. Try stacking some boxes up where the island bench is going to sit and see how it feels!! Is the way your door swings correct in your graphics (plan shows one way, 3D shows other)? It looks like there is still a reasonable distance between the bench and open door. As long as you can work past comfortably when the door is open... I think it will be fine!! Re: Kitchen layout - help please 16Sep 29, 2011 2:47 pm the 3d and the plan are from the same program. it's some kind of bug i think. The door opens towards the kitchen, same as the 3d. On the plan the distance between door and bench is 1400 which should be enough room i think. I love the idea of a huge island bench actually, i've double checked the measurements and the island was too close to the row of cabinets on the wall. here it is revised. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ the actuall length of the room was wrong too as there is significantly more space to the left where the dining table will go. it's almost perfect now, hard to get it right on in these types of programs Re: Kitchen layout - help please 17Sep 29, 2011 2:55 pm Looking fantastic! Oh, also, I love the view out your window in the 3D mock up. Hope that is your actual view!! If so it wouldnt make any differnece making the island unit longer. To make it a U would mean that the cupboards would use 1200 of the 1900 distance which leaves only 700 between island and fridge wall, which is far too small. I've moved the island out now so that it's 900 from the fridge wall cabinets and also leaves enough space for the door to swing into the kitchen. Thanks! You never have a fridge against wall as you’ve drawn.
