We chose to go horizontal for all the drawers and vertical for the cupboards...... my OH's concern with horizontal handles on cupboards (particularly when they are centred) is that you don't know which way the door opens........ The 'show me your kitchen thread' shows a lot of different examples. Of course, since we made our decision last week, I have seen lots of horizontally placed door handles and they look fab! Fingers crossed ours turn out ok........ Our building thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=51657 Re: Cupboard/Drawers Handles,Vertical or Horizontal??? 3Sep 02, 2011 6:14 pm It really depends on the length and type of handle your using. But I usually prefer verticle on doors and horizontal on all drawers. I prefer them all horizontal rather than a mixture of both. Plus we've mainly got drawers in the kitchen so there would be very few vertical if we went that way for the doors. There's no trouble with working out which way the door opens with the handles horizontal. It just opens Re: Cupboard/Drawers Handles,Vertical or Horizontal??? 5Sep 02, 2011 10:38 pm The trend with my prestart clients is roughly 80% go for vertical on doors, horizontal on drawers, and 20% go for horizontal for doors and drawers (generally those are the people trying to go for a more "modern" look). I have been to a friends house that has large handles horizontal and centred at the top of the cupboards, and the door just naturally opens as you pull on the handle, so it's not really an issue to know which way the door will open. If you have lots of banks of drawers in your kitchen, going for horizontal on the cupboards as well does give a really nice streamlined look (also it often lines up nicely with the oven handle, especially if you have cupboard handles that match it). But personally I prefer vertical on doors, horizontal on drawers. Re: Cupboard/Drawers Handles,Vertical or Horizontal??? 6Sep 03, 2011 9:14 am Only our kitchen sink and pantry have doors, everything else is drawers. The kitchen sink doors have horizontal handles and the pantry doors have vertical handles. While it may sound weird it doesn't look out of place and in ease of opening terms it works really well. Re: Cupboard/Drawers Handles,Vertical or Horizontal??? 7Sep 04, 2011 1:41 pm Thanks for the answers folks,i can sit on it for alittle i think,i'm still unsure, have to have a troll through everyones kitchens i think, cheers Block bought 1st RBC X! 2nd Ventrua,Keeper! I, too, was worried about knowing which way to open cupboard doors, and she suggested that I have the handles closer together on the cupboards (not centred on the door) and don't have the handles too wide. I found this photo on the Caesarstone website and I must admit that I'm starting to like them all horizontal. Re: Cupboard/Drawers Handles,Vertical or Horizontal??? 9Sep 05, 2011 2:56 pm I wouldn't worry about the direction the door opens. Once you give a tug on the handle it just opens. Re: Cupboard/Drawers Handles,Vertical or Horizontal??? 10Sep 05, 2011 3:09 pm Horizontal all the way for us - I especially love the handle on the broom cupboard in the laundry - looks funky! For info on our build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=43093 Built the McLaren by Dechellis - slab down 22 Feb - handover 30 Aug 2011 - and gardens finished 9 Dec 2012!! Re: Cupboard/Drawers Handles,Vertical or Horizontal??? 11Sep 05, 2011 3:16 pm My preference was to have horizontal handles on all the drawers and also the pantry (overheads are handle-less), but the kitchen bloke fitted the pot drawer handles first, then when he got to the pantry discovered the 280mm handles would strike the architrave on the sliding glass door when the pantry door was opened, so they had to be vertically fitted...or use a smaller version of the same handle which would have looked stupid on double pantry doors. For the first week or two the vertical handles stood out like a sore thumb, now I don't even notice them although next time I will make sure it doesn't happen again. There is always something (usually minor) you miss when building and this was one of them. If, otoh, he had started fitting the pantry handles first, I might have been able to make changes!! Re: Cupboard/Drawers Handles,Vertical or Horizontal??? 12Sep 05, 2011 3:54 pm Mmmm thanks guys,i am thinking maybe horizontal for all,i think we picked the middle sized handle Have to check that one,gee my pre-start lady is gonna love me again..... not Block bought 1st RBC X! 2nd Ventrua,Keeper! I liked the look of the horizontal on the smaller cupboards, like the kitchen ect, but prefer vertical for the bigger cupboards. Re: Cupboard/Drawers Handles,Vertical or Horizontal??? 16Sep 14, 2011 1:27 am i prefer handless but in the laundry we have vertical on cupboards and horizontal on drawers Recently moved to a 60's home in need of some improvement! http://s797.photobucket.com/user/leenii ... ch%20House Old house: http://s797.photobucket.com/albums/yy25 ... loo/House/ Re: Cupboard/Drawers Handles,Vertical or Horizontal??? 17Sep 14, 2011 11:06 am valleygirl23 thanks for posting that pic.. gawd that is beautiful. *files in future rennovation folder* I went for standard horizontal on drawers and vertical on the cupboards. I think it depends on the set up. If you have more drawers than doors I would keep it them going the same way. We have more doors than drawers, so hopefully the standard layout should look good. I didn't even notice the direction of the handles until you asked the question! It's in the Caesarstone gallery, under Ice Snow. http://www.caesarstone.com.au/Gallery/Kitchen.aspx Re: Cupboard/Drawers Handles,Vertical or Horizontal??? 20Oct 09, 2011 11:02 pm I went all horizontal. The photo from the Caesarstone website is THE kitchen that inspired me to do what I did. I took it with me to EVERY meeting! http://s1181.photobucket.com/albums/x43 ... G_8812.jpg All my handles were horizontal and centred. ONE warning though. The kitchen designer knew (and didn't tell me!! AAAGH!!) that horizontal handles make opening small cupboards almost impossible. I have two teeny tiny cupboards in my kitchen. And when the handles went on, the doors wouldn't open. I demanded the two teeny tiny cupboard doors be remade with push catch closers. And now they work fine. Cheerio! Electrical just got back to me and said the most they can provide is a single power point on the Bedroom 1 side of that wall. After handover, your towel rail installer… 2 3848 |
