Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Jan 27, 2008 7:25 am Hi all
We are having a freestanding 900 cooker (gas/electric combo) in our kitchen but we will be having a higher than usual bench height due to us both being tall and the fact that any future offspring will likely be tall as well .. The oven says that it can be raised on telescopic legs, yet it will only extend to 940 (we are looking at the bench heights being 1000 - 1100 - yet to be finalised).... So my questions are - can these freestanding ovens be placed on a plinth or another kind of base to get them up to the same height as the benches? Or would I maybe be better to go with the a 900-940 height benchtop where the oven is and increase the height of the island (kitchen is a galley design - bench top along oven side is 5m long with the oven around the centre, the sink is in the seperate bench which is about 3.5m long running parallel (walk in pantry and fridge at the end of the longer bench at 90 degrees to the benchtop) - so plenty of room to do prep work on the sink side but I'm concerned that I'm wasting the opportunity of using the 5m long area (as this could also be used for prep work but may be too short if we keep it at standard height) .... I like the look of the different height benchtops but would it look strange when it is 2 parallel benches and not just different areas of the same benchtop .... Thanks Fiona Re: Oven height and matching it to benchtops 2Jan 27, 2008 8:30 am Talinsmum So my questions are - can these freestanding ovens be placed on a plinth or another kind of base to get them up to the same height as the benches? No, not really Both ideas would work. Just remember your kids might not appreciate using the kitchen until they are as tall you! Re: Oven height and matching it to benchtops 3Jan 27, 2008 7:34 pm I same problem with our Smeg 900m freestanding oven which only went 970mm and I put in 1000m benchtops. I emailed Smeg about longer feet and never received a reply.
I simply sat the feet on some offcuts of 90x90 treated pine and fit a stainless steel kickboard the front of it. Re: Oven height and matching it to benchtops 6Jan 28, 2008 7:27 pm Its all you can do really - the oven cannot be lower than the bench height by law Re: Oven height and matching it to benchtops 7Jan 28, 2008 7:54 pm Dukekamaya is right.
For combustible benchtops the cooktop height should not be less than the adjacent benchtop height. If anything it should be at least 10mm (min) above the adjacent benchtop height. Re: Oven height and matching it to benchtops 8Jan 29, 2008 9:26 pm Best bet is to take the legs off .Get your cabinet maker to build it in to your cupboards and make the height up to match your benches. All he needs are the specs or oven.
Good Luck MadChook Hi Chippy, no there isn't, gave it a really good look through and literally opened everything and checked all edges as well.
