Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Jul 21, 2011 5:37 pm We were thinking of getting a sink without an inbuilt drainer, but our builder is making us think twice as he says its not so practical to use. The one I like comes with a drainer that you can sit over the sink, and 95% of our dishes go in dishwasher. What are your experiences with sinks? Keep a drainer or not? Thanks Re: sink, wuth or without drainer? 2Jul 21, 2011 6:00 pm We got a double sink without a drainer, but have the drainer that fits over the sink. For us it works perfectly, because we use the dishwasher and most things get put straight in there. If we didn't have a dishwasher I would probably have got a sink with the drainer but as it is we don't need it. How do you see yourself using it? Which is more practical for you? If there was overflow, I was planning to pop it on a tea towel on the bench until i had time to dry it (or kept a dish rack in the panty). Its a hard one to answer, because you are the only person who knows how much "hand washing" your household generates. Its your kitchen, and people will have to help dry the dishes as you are washing them so you dont run out of room on your drainer!! Re: sink, wuth or without drainer? 4Jul 21, 2011 8:35 pm that's the thing, we don't use the drainer side for its intended purpose, if we wash by hand the dishes go in the other sink anyway, we don't actually own a dish drainer! we only use the drainer side for storing until something is washed or put in the dishwasher. thanks all for confirming what i actually wanted to do! You definately get rid of that ugly drainer, its just one more thing to clean. One thing I have learned about building a house, go with your gut - your first instincts are generally correct. Re: sink, wuth or without drainer? 6Jul 22, 2011 11:38 am We don't have a drainer. If I built again, I'd do it the same. I love the clean look the kitchen has, and the added bonus is the area where the drainer would normally be is more bench/prep space. We have a draining board we pop in the cupboard or in the pantry when not in use. We also have a sink in there, so if anything does have to sit and drain, it usually does so in there. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: sink, wuth or without drainer? 7Jul 22, 2011 9:20 pm No drainer here. The majority of our dishes go in the dishwasher and the few things I do hand wash never all fit on the drainer and I always end up with tea-towels on the bench with the pots and pans on top of them so I didnt see any point Ive got a drainer insert which sits inside one of the tubs if I really need it for whatever reason Custom European Cabinets - Melbourne Kitchen Specialist PM for business details as website currently being updated! Re: sink, wuth or without drainer? 10Jul 26, 2011 2:20 pm for me I'd go drainer That's only because when we do wash by hand (usually my items that I won't put in the DW like pots, pans and blender jug) I hate having water on the benches. If I handwash fancy glasses, I put them on the draining part. if they were put in a dishrack, I'd want the dishrack on the drainer because again, I hate having wet stuff on the actual benchtops. I am having this issue at the moment, where I really want my double drainer but fear it will look fugly in my new kitchen! Re: sink, wuth or without drainer? 11Jul 26, 2011 2:54 pm kel72 So for those who have said no drainer may I ask what brand & style u gotans price? Only if u feel comfortable of course. I have a Blanco BTIPO6. I don't have an accurate price as we changed from the standard Blanco sink with our builder. decogal for me I'd go drainer That's only because when we do wash by hand (usually my items that I won't put in the DW like pots, pans and blender jug) I hate having water on the benches. With a laminate top I would suggest a bowl with drainer unless you dry up straight away everytime. Almost everything goes in dishwasher and we really only use drainer now for food prep Re: sink, wuth or without drainer? 19Jul 27, 2011 4:06 pm It depends on how much you wash up. I for one wont put good cutlery, utensils, fry pans or good pots into a dishwasher. One because as a family of six its full of plates and cups and two because dishwashers are very harsh and we have spent alot of money on our cookwear and knives to stuff them over 3-4 years in a dishwasher. I also suggest a drainer on a laminate top becuase if anything was to be left to dry on the laminate the seel of the sink would be put to work. I have had to replace a few laminate tops due to water damage(half of these could have been avoid if the original tradesman had done his job right) Cutting Edge Kitchens and Cabinet Making http://cuttingedgekitchens.net.au http://www.facebook.com/pages/Cutting-Edge-Kitchens/290484196676 Mobile : 0419 430 575 PH: 9452 4772 Fax :9452 4772 cuttingedgekitchens@outlook.com This certainly doesn't look good.
