Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Jul 19, 2011 10:23 am Building my third (and last) house. I am in early retirement, so looking to have a house (Villa) which suites MY lifestyle and not too interested in resale value, so gotta get it right. Being a Villa house, every square centimetre has to be useful space. Smallish kitchen which I have sacrificed windows for overhead cupboards, so the sink is on the bench top facing the dining area. I know this is quite common now, but I can't help thinking I am using up good bench top space. Have gone down the track of having a single bowl in a previous kitchen renovation, but found it a bit of a nuisance when faced with a half cup of cold tea and a sink full of dishes half washed. Any feedback on under counter sinks? Does the water occasionally get away from you? Are there any issues with cleaning? I like the look of the under counter sinks as it gives the impression of more space (except for the taps sticking up). Ideas/comments anyone? Re: Kitchen sink. Under counter or not? 2Jul 19, 2011 5:07 pm Depends on the benchtop you are having. My kitchen maker didnt recommend it with stone as you are more likely to chip the stone if you hit soemthing against the edge rather than the stainless steel. Also do you need a drainer? Re: Kitchen sink. Under counter or not? 3Jul 19, 2011 5:22 pm No issues with cleaning that I've found, but I suppose if you don't clean any sink there will be problems I just wipe around the sink/stone join line with a microfibre cloth so there is no water left behind. Sink is double undermount in Caesarstone in an island bench overlooking dining/living area with a bright chrome pin lever mixer. Other H1ers have similar styles, just look in the 'Show me your Kitchen' thread for lots of photos. Bendo it depends on the style you want, but there is no drainer here as the second bowl in the undermount sink comes with it's own chrome finish dish rack which fits into either bowl and therefore out of sight. There is a Beech chopping board to fit over the sink as well and this is set into Caesarstone. Again, I think if you are going to be that rough, then any bench surface will be damaged. Hope this helps? Re: Kitchen sink. Under counter or not? 4Jul 19, 2011 5:32 pm I love my undermount sinks because they aren't really visible and having the kitchen near the main living area I wanted a clean look. Cleaning isn't a problem with me either, and I do have a few small chips around the edges but because I have a speckled pattern they can't be seen and I'm trying to be more careful. I would definitely do them again. Have had stone benches with undermount sink (kitchen) and drop-in (laundry) and top-mounted basin (bathrooms) for coming up 13 years and not one chip/scratch of any kind.… 2 9676 Thanks for the insights, that makes perfect sense, and yeah, I will be leaning on the experience of the excavator operator entirely. 6 16122 |
