Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Jul 14, 2011 9:05 pm hi all we are in the process of kitchen reno planning, we are taking out a load bearing wall to open up the kitchen to the lounge, but in order to do that we have to either a) have a supporting/load bearing pole to keep the roof up which will be at the end of the bench (cheaper option) or b) a steal beam in the roof (much more expensive option) Has anyone out there done option A? I'm interested to know how it finished up, and would be grateful for any pictures - or if you could point me somewhere else where i might get some pics. thanks a million everyone! k Re: kitchen reno wall removal & supporting post 2Jul 15, 2011 10:17 am Hi Kel72, We have taken out walls to open up areas, but always gone with option b. Basically because these were properties to sell, and we always get better sales prices with complete "open" areas. Is this for your own home or one that you are selling? Re: kitchen reno wall removal & supporting post 4Jul 29, 2011 3:26 pm Hi Kel, Regarding option b, you don't necessarily need steel depending on what sort of distance you are looking at spanning. We removed a wall and used a laminated timber beam in the roof, which was a very cheap option, the span for this was around 3600 from memory. We removed a wall and used a laminated timber beam in the roof, which was a very cheap option, the span for this was around 3600 from memory. We did the same. Removed a dividing wall and supported the roof with a 4800mm laminated beam. It really depends on how much load is above. I would always go with option B Cutting Edge Kitchens and Cabinet Making http://cuttingedgekitchens.net.au http://www.facebook.com/pages/Cutting-Edge-Kitchens/290484196676 Mobile : 0419 430 575 PH: 9452 4772 Fax :9452 4772 cuttingedgekitchens@outlook.com Re: kitchen reno wall removal & supporting post 6Jul 29, 2011 5:50 pm Span around 7 meters, builder said for steel beam we are looking at extra $10k min, said would prob be cheaper to get a new truss(?) roof!, and a good part of roof is supported by this wall, decision is made now anyway, they start in 2 weeks DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair At a bit of a loss on this one - we're thinking the original owners never removed the protective laminate covers from their kitchen cabinets after installation and in the… 0 6337 Hi, planning on using the attached stone pieces in my bathroom.
