Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Jul 12, 2011 12:08 am Hello All, We are renovating our house with the intention to sell. Our kitchen was stuffed so we have gutted it and and putting in a new one. As we are on a tight budget, and everything is focused on returns (best bang for buck), we are sticking with laminate bench tops and textured vinyl wrapped doors. The kitchen will be installed on polish pine floorboards. To date, we have settled on polytec laminates, Alabaster textured cupboards and Bajimba stone benchtops. Just wondering what people think of this combo? It is not what we would choose if we were to live in it, but we need to be neutral enough to appeal to potential buyers without being downright boring. Luke Colour scheme for budget kitchen 2Jul 12, 2011 7:46 am I like the stone top but for me personally I would go a white cabinet. Alabaster IMO is a hard color - some people see it as too creamy. White means people can add a feature colour to the kitchen - like a red or blue etc to accent. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Colour scheme for budget kitchen 3Jul 12, 2011 8:30 am For resale, and for a kitchen that never dates, I would also go white with the black top. I have said this before, but we had this combo 2 houses ago and when I had the opportunity to see inside our old house recently (after 14ish years) it still looked new and modern. We had white tiles as a splashback with it. Re: Colour scheme for budget kitchen 4Jul 12, 2011 8:43 am I agree with going with white cabinets. We reno'd our kitchen in our old house just before we sold & did white cabinets with a darker marble look laminate bench top. We put a white tile splashback (with a feature tile). I think a big thing when you are selling is that it looks fresh & clean, I am all for 'boring' colours! It then allow the potential buyer to accessories however they like. My only concern with the white is how it might look next to the polished pine boards, but it might be an option to use a different colour on the kitchen back plate (under the main bench, etc) which is what you would see most next to the polish pine. Alternatively, we could stain the pine a stronger, deeper colour, but I don't think it pine stains up that well. Luke Re: Colour scheme for budget kitchen 6Jul 12, 2011 1:53 pm I agree with white. What colour kickboards are you using? A strong colour e.g. dark brown may help to break things up a bit? Re: Colour scheme for budget kitchen 7Jul 12, 2011 2:37 pm I am with alto imo pine floors looks better with off white/cream Re: Colour scheme for budget kitchen 8Jul 12, 2011 6:19 pm Are you having stainless appliances? If so then use stainless looking kickboards to break the transition from the timber flooring to the cabinets (that's what we have - 2pak white gloss / timber flooring) Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Colour scheme for budget kitchen 9Jul 12, 2011 9:27 pm Thanks again. Appliances will be stainless except for the fridge. Good idea about the kickboards (I believe they are to be normal laminate like the rest of the kitchen). Not sure how much stainless would bump up the price. Definitely gone off the Alabaster, now looking at Classic White Texture and Parchment Texture. As an alternative to Bajimba stone, Egger have a laminate called "Slate" see below. You really can't compare it over a small sample size, it has a night mottled/swirled effect. Cheers Luke I'm renovating - building a small extension at the back of the late Edwardian house.
