Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Jul 09, 2011 10:26 pm We currently have whiteish stone look laminate benchtops in our home and about 6 months our lovely teenagers decided to lay alight matches (accidently) on the benchtop. Sooooo we have a number or black burn marks on the benchtop. They are not surface marks, they are quite deep. In others experiences can this be repaired or are we going to have to replace the benchtop. Also if we have to replace the benchtop we may look at stone either caesarstone etc or granite. Would we be able to put stone on our standard cabinet or would they need to be reinforced/replaced. Any advice/information would be great. Re: Damaged Laminate Benchtop 2Jul 11, 2011 5:58 pm There are a range of touchup "crayons" available that can cover up minor damage to laminate tops but nothing that really repairs a laminate surface to a quality similar to the original. If your concern is purely on making the tops useable you can always drill out the affected areas and fill the voids with a polymer/resin similar to what you would use on boat or surfboard repair but this is only to make the top smooth and functional again. A new top is most likely the best solution. A replacement laminate bench is quite easy to install and a stone top isn't much more work, but needs to be supplied and installed by a mason. The cabinets you have will more than likely be fine to put stone tops on (assuming they were manufactured in the last 15 years) as we rarely specify a different type of cabinetry for stone. Good luck. Cheers, Earl Re: Damaged Laminate Benchtop 3Jul 11, 2011 7:22 pm Strumer is spot on. Small marks and scratches can be easily fixed but deeper/bigger ones will never look good once repaired. A new top will probably be the only answer. Remember that when putting in a new top you will need a plumber and electrician to do a disconect and reconect. There could also be some damage to the splash back if care is not taken pulling the old top out. You cabinets should be fine with a stone top. I did'nt think we would be able to get away with a repair job (guess the teenagers wont be getting pocketmoney again - ever ). Good to know that if we want to we can put stone onto our standard cabinets. They are only four years old so all should be good. Now off to get some quotes.
