Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Jul 05, 2011 10:51 pm This is my current kitchen. Looking at a cheapish reno to freshen it up a bit. Priced the bottom cabinets at bunnings and wondering if it would just be easier to pay a cabinet maker to do them? The bench space from wall to the end is about 2.6metres. The cupboards under the window are separate freestanding and I'd ideally like to extend the bench space to the area where they sit in this picture. Fridge is freestanding on opposite side of the room, and oven is in the old chimney cavity. This is my kitchen/dining in an old home so not much space to work with. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I have purchased some 400x400 latte colour ceramic floor tiles and intend to paint the kitchen walls a neutral colour that would fit in with them and my creamish coloured carpets/walls in the other rooms. My brother said he wants me to buy the doors, kickboards and end panels from like bunnings and he can build the shell to go with it. My budget is quite small. He however is not a qualified builder/carpenter/cabinet maker and I'm scared of a diy job. Any ideas what I can do with this small space to improve it on a small budget? Thinking new base cupboards, paint the top ones and maybe put some new doors on (glass if possible) and some tiles for a splash back. Would LOVE to do glass but it would probably be more than I can afford and the whole room is quite small so it would look too out of place I think. Re: Cheap kitchen reno ideas 3Jul 06, 2011 6:45 am Whereabouts are you? If you are thinking about DIYing but really need a custom fitout it can't hurt to get a quote on a made to order flatpack. There are quite a few people around now producing custom cabinets unassembled; with them you get the same quality of cabinetry and hardware as you would from a cabinetmaker and still save some on assembly and installation. Cheers, Earl Re: Cheap kitchen reno ideas 4Jul 06, 2011 4:24 pm Strumer is right. I would get a quote for a custom flat pack, a bunnings kitchen and a kitchen done by a cabinetmaker. Sometimes its not much more than a bunnings kitchen and a whole lot better! Who does the custom flat packs, are there any major companies? Re: Cheap kitchen reno ideas 7Jul 07, 2011 10:24 pm Second hand cabinets is another option. A lot of people sell their old but perfectly good kitchen cabinets. Some new appliances, paint and tiles, and you have a whole new kitchen. You'd need and electrician and plumber, but could DIY the rest if you're handy. I know someone who's in the midst of redoing their kitchen this way and it's costing them a fraction of the price of a whole new kitchen. It's looking fantastic too. http://www.secondhandkitchens.com.au http://www.tradingpost.com.au/DIY-Home-Renovations/Kitchens/Cabinets-Benchtops/Browse?referrer=google_gm_diy_kitchens_vic&s_kwcid=TC|6860|kitchen%20cabinets%20for%20sale||S|b|12044855839&gclid=CKKFyZ6P76kCFZGCpAodiQepZw http://renomart.com.au/used-kitchen-cabinets/ Re: Cheap kitchen reno ideas 8Jul 09, 2011 5:01 pm [quote="kek"]Second hand cabinets is another option. Before we demolised our house I did a pre-demo sale and sold a 2.5 year old white poly kitchen with european appliances for $600. I advertised it on www.gumtree.com.au so look here too as well as ebay. The person who purchased it got the biggest bargain 1. Roof cleaning and paint - which colour do you recommend?
