Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Sep 25, 2011 4:56 pm Hi All,
Hope this works (image posting I am assuming its the same as other sites). I am in the midst of planning my final touches to the build of my house and am stressing over the kitchen. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ The dark door next to the fridge is an entry to a walk-in-pantry under the stairwell. Sorry for the crude drawings, I used a free software I found to generate the layout and pics. Oh and where it says 900mm under the cooker its actually meant to be a 300mm bottle draw/ mini pantry and a 600mm set of draws. The layout dimensions are Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ The draws are also not correct as I will not be having 4 draws, probably be going with 1 shallow and 2 deep. I think the layout should be fine and there should be enough space (maybe too much) but the wife is concerned about having enough bench space. The cooktop is a barezza Lab and is 1,154mm. Would love to hear thoughts from the experts as this is way out of my league. Be kind, but love to hear the comments. Cheers Mark Re: Kichen Layout....Thoughts 2Sep 25, 2011 5:29 pm Are you using stone for your benchtops? If so why not make your island the full width of a slab? That is what I did and it ended up making my island 1.2m wide. Then you have the option to sneak in some narrow 30cm deep cupboards under the breakfast bar side of the bench. This will also cut down slightly on the amount of "dead space" you have between your appliance side and island bench. You will probably only need 3 pendant lights - for some reason odd number of lights look better then even. Our bench is 4m in length with 3 lights overhead. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Kichen Layout....Thoughts 3Sep 25, 2011 5:42 pm Thanks Kyton.... great idea. I will make that amendment. The plan is to then give this to the builder to incorporate into the plan. This is pretty hard doing it all by email as I live overseas, but this little program is a god send. Cheers Mark Re: Kichen Layout....Thoughts 4Sep 25, 2011 6:11 pm I think it looks great and with the little amendments mentioned above it's perfect. I love the idea of a walk in pantry What program is it that you're using? Looks handy.. Re: Kichen Layout....Thoughts 5Sep 25, 2011 6:40 pm Thanks.... the program is called Sweethome 3d. Its dead easy (for me) to use as its like Visio which I have used a lot in a past life. I have actually mocked every part of my build up on this and also the entire plan. It was handy as you can put the actual dimensions in and get a better understanding of how you furniture would fit. Here is the updated look Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ And I thought I would also show the galley look Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I am leaning towards the first one as it orientates better I think. Anyway, I really appreciate the feedback. PM me if you need help with SweetHome3d. Cheers Mark Re: Kichen Layout....Thoughts 6Sep 25, 2011 8:00 pm Although it looks good I am not a big fan of having an oven(or two) beside a fridge. If you do make sure the cabinet maker uses a proper 600mm wall oven cabinet and a panel(same as doors) on either side of it. I have seen ovens installed with only the side of the cabinet between it and the fridge and it gets very hot. Having the second panel really helps alot. I also agree about the extra width of the island unit. Is that a set of corner drawers?? If it is I personally wouldnt use them and dont like them. I would prefer to see equal drawer fonts everywhere. You would have a void in the corner but you have so much space anyway. I want to have a double thickness door panel separating the fridge and oven. The other choice was to have the oven under the cooker. I though the better of two evils as it is much easier to have an oven at chest height, plus it gives a spot for the microwave. The fridge itsself should have heaps of airflow as I am intending of recessing it into the stair cavity to give the impression of a narrow flush fridge but have bigger capacity. I am also not a fan of the corner space but have seen the Hafele solution that is one of the better rotating solutions. I have tried to make the draws all 600s but i have a 300 for oils and bottles etc near the cooker. I really dont know which brand to go for but assume that Blum, Hafele and Hettich are similiar. CEK, may also need to pick your brains on door finishes as well as I think I have a choice of Laminex, Polysomethingorruther but not 2pac. Cheers Mark Re: Kichen Layout....Thoughts 9Sep 25, 2011 9:31 pm Hey Mark. I was going to say that I loved the galley style more but realised it was just because of the longer bench under the windows. If you did that on your main design I think it's a winner. What sort of sink are you having? Your 3D seems to indicate a double bowl but your plan shows only a 600mm sink cupboard with the dishwasher next to it. You will only fit a single bowl into that space. I'd also consider making your drawers wider than 600mm. A 600mm carcase width ends up only having approx a 500mm wide internal drawer. If you put in wider drawers you lose less space to runners and carcase. I also think it looks better, not so fussy. I'd also use a Lemans unit for the corner cupboard and have it opening out of a door on the oven side and then have your small drawers in between that and the ovens. The lemans units a good for putting large appliances on, as the shelf pulls completely out of the cupboard it's very easy to access them. Just a few points worth thinking about. TheGilbeys, I think if I extend the bench nearest the windows another 600mm like in the Galley layout it will mean that the island is no longer in-line. Not sure if its a no-no or not. One thing about the Galley layout is that if you are at the Brekky bench eating you can still see and hold a conversation with anyone at the table. For the first layout people at the brekky bar will have their backs to whom ever is at the table. Hmmm very stressful. Chippy, very good points and seeing your work, me thinks you know a thing or two . Who makes the Lemans unit you mention?? Regarding the sink you are spot on, the wife wants a double bowl so that will be approx 800mm so the other units will need to be adjusted, maybe a dishwasher and a big 1m draw. For the rest where I have put 600mm draws what do you suggest, use 900mm and make them heavy duty weight limits?? I find this site a god send as I am an accountant and really like to analyse and can completely miss the practical side of things. Thanks so much for your help. I will incorporate into the design and resubmit a new pic of the layout. Flying off to UK now so will have to wait to teh following weekend. Ciao Mark Re: Kichen Layout....Thoughts 12Sep 26, 2011 6:34 am Blum, Hafele and Hettich all make corener drawer units of the same quality. I am with chippy though and would use a Lemans unit. Blum, Hafele and Hettich all make them. You could have the door cut to look like drawers so it doesnt change the look. I also agree that 600mm is a bit small for drawer units. You would be better off removing one of the 600 units and putting it into the rest of the drawers. Polyurethane, is that the finish you were offered??? This is actually also 2 pac. Just a different name. Also, when you are working at the island bench you are facing the rest of the room as opposed to side on. We have done a simular thing, agree with the three lights which someone else mentioned. Also, I put my sink and dishwasher in the kitchen bench, I put the sink right in the middle of the bench because it just seemed to balance better, if you are doing stone, not sure if you would have any joins, if so they are usually least noticable placed at the sink or stove. I have just gotten my own new kitchen so I will tell you a couple of things I love about my new kitchen from a woman's point of view. We have an appliance cupboard from bench up with bi fold door, hides everything! The bottom shelf pulls out and holds our coffee machine and kettle, second shelf holds the microwave and then other less used things on upper shelves, one of my big things with my design is I did not want to see the microwave! We also have a pull out drawer with bin system below our sink with three removable bins for garbage and recycling. With your pantry you definately have to install a sensor light so when you open the door it automatically lights up, great low cost wow feature and if you wife likes baking an upright drawer so her pans/tins are easier to get to (ie they are on their sides as opposed to stacked in a drawer). I think besides the look of the design is also thinking about what items you have in your current kitchen and need to use on a regular basis. If I was in your kitchen I would wonder where I would put my drinking glasses and breakfast cereal within easy reach, also it seems like the counter is a long way from the fridge if you are pouring a drink. Look forward to seeing the finished product! Re: Kichen Layout....Thoughts 15Sep 30, 2011 9:11 am Thanks for the input. I am still a little torn on teh two as both have their benefits. The plan is not to use the kitchen as teh primary cooking area as my wife is Asian and prefers the "wet" kitchen for cooking. We will be having a commercial cooktop and wood fired oven in out Alfresco which will be UMR. I suspect in the colder months will be the main time the inside kitchen will be used. All good points on storing according to functionality and convenience, makes sense. We will be having a generous walk in panty utilising the void under the stairwell and because the kitchen and living areas are sunken it should provide ample space. I guess this all depends on how much more the builder is charging as it all costs and they sting pretty hard for each change. Thanks for sparing time to look and comment, it is very helpful. Ciao Mark Re: Kichen Layout....Thoughts Updated For changes 16Oct 01, 2011 8:32 pm Hi All Thanks for the input. I have changed the size of the drawers to be 900mm where possible and the corner unit I think would suit better is the Magic Corner. Benches against the wall are 650mm and the island is now 1,200mm. Still torn between what I am calling Galley and Kitchen. I have tried to copy in the same perspective as well. First off is the Kitchen Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Space between bench and island is 900mm Next the Galley Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ For the Galley the space between Fridge and Island is 1,000mm A point to note is the I will not be having 4 equal sized drawers, it will be one shallow and two deep, just the free software only had what I used. I will also be asking for insulated divider/ separator between fridge and Ovens. Look forward to any further suggestions, also which choice. The orientation is that looking towards the Fridge the living room and Home Theater are to the left. Cheers Mark Re: Kichen Layout....Thoughts Updated For changes 18Oct 02, 2011 9:19 am I still like the Galley style more Casey + Gary + 5 kool kiddos + 1 funky Frenchie + 5 happy hens = barrels of fun in Muswellbrook Re: Kichen Layout....Thoughts Updated For changes 19Oct 05, 2011 8:25 pm I like the first layout as if you are chopping and using the sink and you have people at the table, you are able to talk to them without turning. It also depends on what's opposite the island in the galley style, if it's just a wall, it could be boring to stare at while in the kitchen. I like the idea though of extending the bench against the wall out like you have in the galley style, I know it won't line up with the island bench, but I have seen it like that before and it looks fine. You could have a little wine fridge under the bench in that extra spot Re: Kichen Layout....Thoughts Updated For changes 20Oct 05, 2011 10:51 pm I like the galley if those are windows opposite the island (on either side of rangehood). Also it's more social for people sitting at the bar stools to talk to anyone at the table. They won't watch the cook so much It gives two different lines for the lights, too (island and dining). I'm a bit worried that the sink is so tightly into the corner of the island - and would rather have it on the wall bench with the cooktop moved along? If the dishwasher is in the island, I've heard they can be noisy. You need enough space to be able to pull the fridge out to replace it and enough to swing the door fully open to get vege drawers out to clean them.
