Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 May 23, 2011 8:49 pm I dont even know where to begin. Im so upset Im actually crying (I know that's silly b/c there are far, far worse things in the world). My kitchen is my life - i love cooking & entertaining. We're building a new house & my kitchen was recently installed: all white high gloss laminate with a massive (3 meters by 1.4 meters) of Ceaserstone Shimmer white. I decided on Dulux Silk wort with glass splash back. I choose not to have the glass starfired as the cabintet maker said to me to to get a sample & place it against some glass to see how it looks. well, I did that & it looked fine. Today we went to see the kitchen & I was devastated & shocked to see just how vastly different the colour is. To give you an idea silk wort is a light to med grey colour - instead b/c I didnt get it starfired in looks like weird pale teal/blue. like this: Unfortunately I dont have any options as I made the decision not to go ahead with starfire. I was under the impression that starfire glass was only needed for very light colours. Does anyone know what I can do? Or do I just have to suck it up? Im not strapped for cash but then we're not exactly rolling in it either kwim? It would cost around $2000 to get it re-done (not that Im thinking of that). Re: Im devasted about my new kitchen :( 2May 23, 2011 8:55 pm Have you confirmed that it is actually the right colour done with Dulux paint? If it had a tinge of green/blue to it I would understand but it's such a weird colour. Im going back on the weekend when there's more light to see if maybe its a bit different (i doubt it though). Re: Im devasted about my new kitchen :( 6May 23, 2011 10:03 pm I so hear you and sympathize with you. I chose a stone colour for mine off samples the builder showed us. What the builder never told us that these samples were on starfire and we had to say we wanted starfire. We had no idea at the time and just assumed we were getting the sample that was shown to us. 6 months later and I still stare at it everyday "wishing" it was the right colour. That would peeve me off, surely they would have to supply what was shown to you and what you agreed to you! Re: Im devasted about my new kitchen :( 8May 23, 2011 10:12 pm yeah, that's what I thought too, but they are standing by the fact it would have cost extra and we didn't ask for it... we had no friggin idea, so how were we to know! I would've paid the extra to have what I wanted, but we weren't told so we could make a decision. Re: Im devasted about my new kitchen :( 10May 23, 2011 10:26 pm Like me and my bathroom, one downside of building.. you have higher expectations of what it is to look like because you choose it all. If you bought the house with it the way it is I'm sure you wouldnt think anything of it. Hopefully once you get in there and your appliances and bits and pieces are out and its all kitcheny you won't even think about it Re: Im devasted about my new kitchen :( 11May 23, 2011 10:27 pm You might like it once you are in and everything is in it's place, but yeah, I don't hate mine, but I don't love it either, because it's not what I wanted. I'm sure yours will still look stunning though Re: Im devasted about my new kitchen :( 12May 23, 2011 11:21 pm Sounds similar to what happened to this poster http://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=47813 One poster there suggests that standard glass has a blue/green tinge which would account for the colour difference. It seems silly to me that they would even offer you a choice of colour and then put glass in front of it that will change it to something different. Bizzare. If it's going to make your life misserable, then I'd get it replaced. You don't want to spend all that money on something only to be disappointed every time you look at it. Re: Im devasted about my new kitchen :( 13May 24, 2011 11:48 am I actually love the colour you posted-but that's me! Re: Im devasted about my new kitchen :( 16May 25, 2011 2:46 pm I know how you must be feeling chi chi because that has just happened to me. I asked for white on white on starfire and got skyblue. I have nothing in my house of that colour and like you cried my eyes out when i saw it. This only happened last week . I do not think I can live with it. Im devasted about my new kitchen :( 18May 25, 2011 5:04 pm Becks - check all your contract / specs. Make sure it is specified in words to ensure that they give you the right glass. It is the only way to ensure it. Some things are worth waiting for. Im devasted about my new kitchen :( 20May 25, 2011 6:02 pm tstr1a starfire glass was only a $328 upgraded from the standard glass splash back. It's a must as a green/blue tinge looks cheap and odd. I would hardly say that non-starfire glass looks cheap. Yes on light / mid tones it throws blue green and therefore affects the colour. However on a dark colour tone it makes no discernible difference at all. So why pay more if you have a dark colour? For a light tone or for something like my photo splash I would personally never go anything other then starfire - wouldn't care what the cost. Some things are worth waiting for. Assuming the structure of your cabinetry is good then I would DIY everything as follows: - replace your counter tops entirely, - replace all drawer runners with soft close… 1 4774 The gap can be adjusted so it's tighter. You can definitely set up corner cabinets to have the same gap as standard doors. 2 13532 No. It's not original. Circa early to mid 90s would be my guess and maybe even as late as early 2000s 1 6623 |
