Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 May 23, 2011 9:23 pm Our kitchen will have 3m ceilings, so I wondering whether we should have a dropped ceiling over the kitchen. i am worried that with just standard bulkheads over the cupboards they will be to high. Has anyone built a kitchen with 10ft ceilings with/without a dropped ceiling I would love to see photos The extra cost is $1700 to have the ceiling dropped 300-400mm. Thanks gogo Re: Dropped ceiling over kitchen 2May 23, 2011 9:36 pm I think it depends on the style of your home. We are renovating a 1920s cal bung and retaining 3.1 m ceilings throughout original and new parts of th house, including kitchen. I think if u have a moden style particularly with open plan, dropping down the ceiling helps to differentiate the space. Re: Dropped ceiling over kitchen 4May 23, 2011 9:46 pm I was just babbling on in another thread today that I wish we'd dropped our kitchen ceiling to differentiate the space a bit. We have 2700 ceilings, and it may be something that gets done down the track. I wish I'd thought about it before the build though. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. They look high Re: Dropped ceiling over kitchen 8May 23, 2011 10:19 pm We got the upper cupboards increased in height so we didn't have to have huge bulkheads. Not sure the good wife will be able to reach anything on the top shelves but it looks good. Step ladder gogo our ceilings are 2700 Re: Dropped ceiling over kitchen 11May 23, 2011 10:35 pm Ok, photobucket has decided to play nice... apparently it doesn't work in firefox... only IE. Whatever! Here's my kitchen when we were building... we have bulkheads above the overheads... ceilings are 2700. I would have liked a drop ceiling that follows the bench and then meets up to line up with the angled wall. http://i519.photobucket.com/albums/u353/joles_photo/2009-10-04_08-27-13_041020091263.jpg http://i519.photobucket.com/albums/u353/joles_photo/2009-10-04_08-26-34_041020091262.jpg I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Personally I think that style looks better without the drop. A more modern square set look seems to suit it better. Re: Dropped ceiling over kitchen 13May 23, 2011 10:54 pm I have a dropped ceiling and then another bulkhead over the cupboards. I can reach the top of them just nicely. Our ceiling is 31c, the dropped ceiling is 28c and the bulkhead over the cupboards is 2100. (excuse all the pics together, its all I have on the computer at the moment) http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q4/eliz77/kitchen.jpg Re: Dropped ceiling over kitchen 14May 23, 2011 10:56 pm Oops, you can't really see the dropped ceiling in those. http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q4/eliz77/260311_0199.jpg Re: Dropped ceiling over kitchen 15May 23, 2011 11:01 pm shakyreno Looking at your cornices Joles, you've got a classic look throughout your house. Personally I think that style looks better without the drop. A more modern square set look seems to suit it better. Our builder didn't offer square set. I've seen a few displays with a drop ceiling with the cornice we have and I don't mind how it looks. Not something that's high on the priority list to get done anyway. I think we'll be gone from here before we get that far down the list. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Is that a laminex type finish on the front of your island bench. Am thinking of doing something similar, there's some really great patterns out there... http://www.laminex.com.au/colour-palette.php#!/colour-palette/ebony-bellezza Re: Dropped ceiling over kitchen 17May 23, 2011 11:13 pm Rizzo Oops, you can't really see the dropped ceiling in those. http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q4/eliz77/260311_0199.jpg that looks awesome Re: Dropped ceiling over kitchen 19May 23, 2011 11:48 pm Thanks everyone for your help. Joles, your kitchen looks great but I can see that having the dropped ceiling would define that area and would look great Rizzo your kitchen is also beautiful, infact I am hoping mine will be similar I think we may pay for the dropped ceiling, we will still have 9ft ceilings in the kitchen so will have taller cabinets like Karry but with the dropped ceiling as well. We won't be having any cornices as such, as we have shadow line cornices throughout. Re: Dropped ceiling over kitchen 20May 24, 2011 12:50 pm i think definately go dropped....it looks great Levelling compound Ardit is the best but buy a bag of sand and make sand dam to protect your wood floor 2 13257 Thanks for sharing. Looks good. The joiner has come back with a quote of close to 5k. I think we are going to not do it. Attaching panelling is something they are dead… 11 10128 You can put a roller blind behind the shutters. It will be much less noticeable when not in use. 3 18088 |
