Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 May 02, 2011 7:10 pm Hello everyone, I'm not really familiar with measurements and I'm wondering, what is the standard measurement for the extra benchtop protruding beyond the cabinets on a kitchen island? We're living on a rental and the benchtop is just not that far enough for your feet to go underneath with the bar stool. I hope I make sense...for I really don't know what that part of the bench top is called. Thanks for all your help. Srichz Re: kitchen island question? 2May 02, 2011 7:18 pm Your question makes pefect sense You're referring to the breakfast bar... well that's what we call it. Ours is 30cm Re: kitchen island question? 6May 02, 2011 11:14 pm 300mm is the maximum unsupported overhang recommended by manufactured stone suppliers. That's the commonly used size for most breakfast bars. You mentioned the max is 300mm with out support. Are waterfall ends enough support? I hope so as that's what's on our plans and we are nearly at lock up stage so the kitchen won't be too far off going in, Re: kitchen island question? 11May 03, 2011 9:34 am Hi Srichz, We had a holiday house built a few years ago and the standard overhang, we were told, is 200mm or 20cm. That is what we built and you're right, not enough space to get your knees in. In our current build for a new home we have made it 30cm as well. We have been told our breakfast bar overhang will be 25cm but I don't understand why it would be when standard seems to be 30cm. Re: kitchen island question? 13May 03, 2011 12:24 pm Normally a slab is around 3060 x 1440. My stonemason said that allowing for chips on edges and mitring finishing on my bench the widest we could go was 1200. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: kitchen island question? 14May 03, 2011 12:28 pm 3040mm x 1440mm and thicknesses is 20mm or 30mm Edit: Kyton beat me to it. Finished size roughly 3000X1400 after trimming and polishing. "Standard" is whatever is standard for that fabricator and not necessarily what makes the most sense. 300mm is the MAXIMUM that an unsupported overhang should be, either in Caesarstone or laminated 34mm benchtops. 200mm used to be a common overhang depth when breakfast bars weren't as ubiquitous as they seem to be today. Saving that extra 100mm has also often been a concern in smaller environments where people haven't always had as much space to spare. A very standard reason for < 250mm overhangs is that if cut from a 1440mm wide sheet they can leave enough material for another run of benchtops instead of having to use another slab of material, which is particularly important for those people trying to squeeze the most out of the quote they have written. Cheers, Earl Re: kitchen island question? 17May 03, 2011 4:32 pm kyton Casa - that is why our designer added in the slim 30cm cupboards. Great for hiding away cookbooks and vases - things not needed every single day. That what we did with our island bench, great hiding spot for the treats, DS has his easter eggs in there hidden from Dad. We also brought the cupboard in 30cm on either side, as we didnt go with waterfall end, you can also sit around the bench as well.
