Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Apr 27, 2011 12:41 pm I have got no idea what to do with my pantry at the moment and I'm hoping someone here will have some good advice for me. I have a walk in pantry with a sliding door to fill with shelving. This is where my problem ******. The pantry is 1.5 metres deep by 2.4 metres wide. If there was no limit on the budget ideally I'd have a laminex benchtop 600mm deep in a U shape at bench height. I'd put another shelf underneath either whiteboard or particle board (I don't really care) in the same U shape all the way around to house all the appliances and bigger things. Above the bench I'd have shelving (again either whiteboard or particle board) say about 300mm deep at around head height also in a U shape all the way around. This would mean I'd be able to get a fair bit in the pantry including my microwave and also use the benchtop for the toaster, kettle, charging phones etc... However the problem is that we have a budget and we probably can't really afford to get the laminex bench to go right around in the U shape. So I figured we'd do the laminex bench on the left of the pantry as you walk in (this side will be the most visable from the kitchen). Then on the right we'd get melamime shelving, 2 of them 600mm deep and then then the 300mm deep shelving above. Basically to match the left side but all melamime. We'd then reasess whether to put more shelving in later on the back wall as you walk in. Or I was thinking I could use that wall for an organiser or put up hooks or something. Maybe even black board paint there or something. This is affordable but not doable according to the kitchen company. They said they cannot do the 600mm deep melamime shelving because of the support issues. So they have offered to upgrade the left hand side to proper cabinets under the bench only with no doors, so I'd have adjustable shelving and they would have backs on them. And also 300mm cabinets above, same thing, adjustable shelves with no doors. Then on the other side they can do the shelving (5 rows) but they would all be 400mm deep. This dosn't appeal to me in the slightest as I was already disappointed that I had this good sized pantry and could only use two sides of it rather than the u shape and now with another 200mm chopped off the right hand side I'd feel like there's so much wasted space in there that could have been put to good use elsewhere if I knew this was going to be an issue. So I'm thinking of either ditching the laminex benchtop idea altogether and just get the builder to build particle board shelving in a U shape. I'd have the 2 lower ones at the 600mm deep and the above as 300mm. This way I'd get a bench all the way round although not as easy to wipe out as melamime and I'd be utilising all the space. And hopefully its more affordable. Or I keep the bench and have doorless cabinets above and below and just try to find some suitable (affordable) shelving myself later for the long wall and right hand wall. Or I just do as they have suggested. What do you think? Maybe you have another idea I havn't thought of? Pantry Design Help Needed please 2Apr 27, 2011 2:20 pm Mine is 5.5m by 1.8m. My shelves stretch the long wall and shorter return. Four shelves - bottom two 45cm deep, top two 30cm deep. Ours are painted chipboard same as wall colour. Re: Pantry Design Help Needed please 4Apr 27, 2011 6:16 pm Having the kitchen company put in strong cabinets with the benchs, sounds better than using weaker timber, maybe with support issues. I have cabinets with benchtops in my pantry for the strength and endurance required. Lots of weight with appliances and cans of food. Just make sure you get enough power points. They come in very handy for the dustbuster, phones etc Re: Pantry Design - all sorted, see pic! 5May 01, 2011 9:21 am Ok I think what I've decided to do now is to keep the configuration on the left hand side as already organised. Then in front and going round the corner I think I'll go to ikea and put in my own shelving. Then later down the track if its really not working for me, we can look into getting the cabinet makers back and putting in the whiteboard shelves. This is what I'm thinking of:- http://www.flickr.com/photos/paolovalde/83058073/in/faves-52589284@N03/ They are called Gorm shelves from Ikea and they're relatively cheap and look easy to put together. Re: Pantry Design Help Needed please 6May 01, 2011 10:05 pm We have a u shaped pantry similar to yours. Ours is 2.25m by 1.2m. We ended up with open white melamine floor units on the bottom, white laminate on the top of these, and then open wall units above this. I am really really really happy with how this has worked out. I am really pleased I have managed to design my kitchen and not have a microwave on show (one of my dislikes) and not have it at toddler eye height (ie under bench) either. I'm not sure how much this cost as it was included in our kitchen quote from the start, but I must say it looks just fabulous. I can't wait to move in and fill it up! Could you do it all yourself using Ikea - have open base units on the bottom and wall carcases on the top, together with the laminate bench top? I have no idea how much this will cost, but it's worth looking into it. Basically. If the shelves are fixed then they will be screwed in just the same as the rest of the carcass.
