Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Apr 12, 2011 8:20 pm Hi, We are in the early stages of building our new home & have kitchen selections coming up. I'm after opinions, we have a island bench which is about 3m long & I'm not sure where to put the kitchen sink On the plans it has been put in the centre which I think I prefer the look of, but then I wonder if we should have it to one end so we have a larger serving area without breaking up the space? Just wondering what people would find more practical/attractive Thanks! Re: Where should I put the kitchen sink!?! 4Apr 12, 2011 8:36 pm Thanks for the reply Rebecca, My kitchen is the same shape as yours by the look of it but the side (where your sink is) is all cupboards& a concealed laundry door so there is no space there & the bench space along the back has the cooktop so there wouldn't be enough room. I don't know if your sketches are & indication of your colour selections but I was thinking of having light 2pac to all the cupboards & a dark laminate to the front of the island. Is that the kind of look you have gone for? I've only seen it once in a display home & it looked really good. Re: Where should I put the kitchen sink!?! 6Apr 12, 2011 9:03 pm I would have it off centre gives more uninterrupted space. Re: Where should I put the kitchen sink!?! 7Apr 12, 2011 9:04 pm Ours was originally drawn in the middle of the bench but the cabinet guy installed the cabinets under the bench incorrectly and it ended up going about 3/4 the way down the left of the bench. Looking at it now we prefer it this way because we have a nice big prep/serving area on the island. Helena Re: Where should I put the kitchen sink!?! 9Apr 12, 2011 10:06 pm Thanks for the replies, My husband has just reminded me our island is 4m long I was starting to lean toward having the sink to one side but starting to think I might need the sink centred to break it up a bit, not like we will be short of space I guess. JTNRU - Congrats on your new kitchen, that is exciting! If there is a join this should be a consideration when locating the sink - you may want to put the end of the sink at the join so it (the join) is less obvious - reconstituted stone goes up to 3000mm. I would still advocate putting the sink at one end though but you would need to make sure the people supplying and installing the stone are aware and agree about this. Cheers, Earl Re: Where should I put the kitchen sink!?! 13Apr 13, 2011 7:10 am This same question was asked in another forum and the general consensus was to have the sink to one side. If it was mine I would do that too. I like an uninterruped area for crafting or simply for spreading out when preparing and wouldn't want to have to be moving from one side of the sink to the other while preparing because one side ended up not being big enough. It keeps your dirty dishes/washing up area and your work area separate too. Re: Where should I put the kitchen sink!?! 14Apr 13, 2011 7:40 am It seems that having the sink to the side is the preferred location. Suh, yes, I was planning to put 4 bar stools along the island so we can eat without having to set the table on lazy nights Thanks for that info Earl, we are using caesar stone & I wasn't sure what the maximum length was. I hadn't really thought about the join location either. So I guess if I tell the joinery people I want the sink to 1 end & the join at the sink it will be about 1m in which would be happy with. My sink is 1.25m and is slap bang in the centre. We have two seating areas on either side if the raised servery which doubles as a splashback (and hides) for the sink. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Where should I put the kitchen sink!?! 16Apr 13, 2011 2:43 pm Hi Broom Our bench is 4.36m long. I've noticed that my join is 1m from the end as @Strumer has indicated in a reply. We have our sink up against the wall freeing up the full length of the bench, but if I had to I would put the sink on closer to the end of the bench near the join. Photos of our kitchen setup so far are on my profile. Hope this helps! Infact if I had my time over I wouldnt have anything on that benchtop I would put it on the bench behind. I also have a sink in my WIP and now feel that I have wasted all that bench space out the front. Anyway I think its a personal choice. Cheers Janet Re: Where should I put the kitchen sink!?! 19Apr 19, 2011 7:38 am wildorchid undermount sink will also free up bench space Yeah, we did consider an undermount sink but I can't believe how expensive they are!! Cheers Janet I think I will get the sink moved to one end (now to decide which one ) the only other bench I have is at the back but the cooktop is there & that bench is not huge. Anyone had one of these done recently? Not sure if they are straight forward and easy… 0 747 |
